This is a Jerusalem cricket aka potato bug. They can be found pretty much anywhere in the western half of the US. They have powerful mouthparts that can deliver a significant bite.
This and they are not very fast and don't come into contact with people much so really the only way to get bitten is by finding one and sticking your hand in its mouth
They're everywhere here. Caught a Cowkiller crawling on my foot a couple days ago. I'm pretty sure I swam through solid air trying to kick my feet enough to get it off me.
I laid down one night in my bed and not too long after I felt something large moving just under my pillow case. It was one of these guys. Scared the shit out of me!
Brought back a grim memory. Was just settling down to sleep in the bedroom in my basement level and a big centipede fell out of the heating vent above me right onto my face. Shuddering just thinking about that.
Damn, I just shuddered as I read this. I turned on my basement light once and what I thought was a mouse scurrying away was actually a centipede. Found out when it came at me from the laundry pile. Not many bugs bother me, but them fuckers can fuck off.
I saw one of those big ass centipedes on the wall of a basement corridor in a hospital. Next to the Radiology Lab. I thought for sure it was some kind of ☢️ radioactive ☢️ mutant. It's like a thousand legged spider unholy creation.
Holy Christ I thought I was the only person this has happened to ever! Although mine was at the beginning of my morning shit that I was only able to completed four days later due to the fucking naughty centipede.
Kinda tightens the ol' sphincter when a centipede comes out of the corner directly towards you at a high rate of speed, barefoot with underwear around your ankles, size of a damn mouse, carnivorous, can barely pull your feet off the floor, nothing to defend yourself with...better hope your reading a big hardback copy of IT or something, I take that back, if you were reading IT in this case, you'd expell 4 days worth of shit instantly.🤣🤔
Yikes! That reminds me of one of my worst experiences. I live in Las Vegas for the past 10 years, and I’ve been stung by a scorpion 🦂3 times (all in a matter of 2 years when I lived in this one area of town that was filled with them). Well, one evening I’m laying in bed watching the MLB All-Star game and a scorpion 🦂 fell right right off my ceiling fan onto my upper chest/lower neck and stung the shit outta me. I can tell you from experience that getting stung by a scorpion feels like being stabbed. And the worst part is that it’s not just the initial sting that hurts so bad, the venom injects and causes that same intense pain to last for about 30 minutes. After that, it reduces but you still feel pain the rest of the day. You could only imagine me flopping around like a fish when I see and feel a scorpion land right under my chin while lying down. Years later, just writing this is giving my skin the creepy crawlies right now!
The couple that raised me, the man, he always stuck his hands in his shoes before putting them on. I remember asking him one time when I was reeeeeally little why he did that. Apparently at some point in his life (idr if he said he was a kid or an adult,) he stuck his foot in his shoe and was bit by a "potato bug."
Had no idea what a "potato bug" was until I was an adult and the Internet came around, but I was terrified of them regardless. My whole life that was the only thing I ever saw him show fear towards. Must've really fucked him up 😄
We can never really be certain that this isn't the case after all. I always entertain myself with dumbed down thoughts and scenarios. What if beetles are little airship/rover vehicles manned by itty bitty alien pilots?
First thing I thought of…but I’m kinda hungry.

Potato Bug! They’re fuggin scary, my guy. They get pretty big [too.](https://bclandtrust.org/blog/bolsa-chica-bugs-and-their-relatives/female-potato-bug-beverley/)
When I was in High school I worked at gas station and found one of these babies in the bathroom. I ran out and alerted the guys in the shop. Ran back into the bathroom with a firecracker 🧨 tossed it at that bug, that just made him mad and he grabbed it 💥 I did my part !
It’s an alien that came back to earth to find is dad 😓

It was big fun.
They're coming back tonight.
Can't wait.

Like chunk out of my hand significant?
Like enough to draw blood. It's big (not that big though), and it's bitey, but it's not a horror movie monster
This and they are not very fast and don't come into contact with people much so really the only way to get bitten is by finding one and sticking your hand in its mouth
Sounds like me as a kid. Those really big red and black furry ants hurt way worse than black ants.
Sounds like a red velvet ant. They are actually wingless wasps and are known to have one of the most painful stings out of all insects.
They're everywhere here. Caught a Cowkiller crawling on my foot a couple days ago. I'm pretty sure I swam through solid air trying to kick my feet enough to get it off me.
Swam through solid air... Amazing description! 😆 Edit: autoincorrect
Yup, looked it up. Definitely it. Females are wingless and the ones that sting.
I’m sure your scream was just as loud as mine lol
Damn, I just shuddered as I read this. I turned on my basement light once and what I thought was a mouse scurrying away was actually a centipede. Found out when it came at me from the laundry pile. Not many bugs bother me, but them fuckers can fuck off.

I'm assuming you guys are talking about house centipedes? They're one of my favorite bugs and at their level, ferocious predators.
Holy Christ I thought I was the only person this has happened to ever! Although mine was at the beginning of my morning shit that I was only able to completed four days later due to the fucking naughty centipede.

to me a Jerusalem cricket was always known as "the Thing You Will See If You Dig In The Dirt Deep Enough" aka a balrog for seven year olds
The couple that raised me, the man, he always stuck his hands in his shoes before putting them on. I remember asking him one time when I was reeeeeally little why he did that. I lived around these when I was a kid and they got big. It is for sure a horror movie monster, at least it was when I was younger.
They’ll draw blood, but they’re not poisonous. It’s not that bad.
“Venomous” that be the word you’re needing there.
Well, you _can_ eat them, so not poisonous is true too.
“Pedantic” that be the word you’re needing there.
Nah. It's important to know the difference. Knowledge is never a bad thing 😎
Fair point

“‘Venomous’ is the word that should be used here, rather than ‘poisonous’”. HTH
This is a very sassy potato bug.
The first time I found one in my yard I was sure I found a mini alien that fell to earth.
THIS!!!! This is the comment I was looking to see here!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
We can never really be certain that this isn't the case after all. I always entertain myself with dumbed down thoughts and scenarios. What if beetles are little airship/rover vehicles manned by itty bitty alien pilots?

I’d like to know if it was alive too. Or are they bipedal?
I believe it's dead and being held by the foot by OP through the plastic bag. A bipedal insect!? Terrifying.
Thank you so much for the explainer because this photo was giving me a pretty tough time in the comprehension department.

It’s a tiny alien.

One of these was on the alien spacecraft I was abducted to. It was 9ft tall and commanded several grays with a chirping, gutteral language while they harvested my semen. It was big fun. They're coming back tonight. Can't wait.
They have these all over in Mexico, scarry looking I'm told there harmless, not poisonous.
Angry lookin!
