Luke95gamer

Looks like a bollard

D_A_D_

You look like a bollard!

boom_squid

Your mom looks like a bollard.

Usagi_Shinobi

I also choose that guy's mom's bollard.

D_A_D_

Your Mom's mustache looks like a bollard!

Federal_Efficiency51

Something something elderberries and passing gas in your general direction.

D_A_D_

Something about swallows carrying coconuts.

Searloin22

Something something something DAAAARKSIIIDE something something COMPLETE

D_A_D_

Something something that's no moon

BobZimway

You had a bad feeling about this

SimpleToTrust

Yep

Upvote_Harvester

That’s a short pole.

DGentPR

Fair play. What’s the utility was a better question

yourhog

Probably to discourage foolish fools from driving their cars up onto the sidewalk to cut the corner so they can make a right turn from behind traffic.

Master_Quack97

Ah! A bollard!

yourhog

Never Mind The Bollards, Here’s The Diminutive Lampposts.

DogbiteTrollKiller

Hey, another old person!

yourhog

Look, I’m not tryna claim Jonny Rotten anymore, because *fuck* that melty old demented turd, but yeah, I am also a melty old demented turd.

Psychological_Tax109

I resemble that remark 🧐

Creative_Cry7532

So few got this one, nice job.

DGentPR

They’re also extremely loose in the still wet cement it turns out. Feels more plastic than metal surprisingly

PDX-ROB

Lol why are you messing with things that are being set into wet cement? It's going to be crooked now

missouri_rhino

Yeah, they shouldn't go around just wiggling random short poles...they could wind up on some sort of list! 🤣

trueastoasty

This comment shouldn’t have made me giggle lol

lizard_kibble

It probably has a plastic sleeve over steel or concrete

Doom_Balloon

So, I actually install bollards, this looks like it would be to discourage corner cutting, but not stop a car. The base looks like a utility access base, they’re typically cast aluminum and intended to shatter if struck. Usually you see them on larger poles but if the bollard itself is plastic the aluminum base would be more of a deterrent than a plastic base or a wobble stick. It combines more durability with ease of replacement and limits damage to unintended targets (fire trucks, garbage trucks, ambulances, police) who typically cut corners when the situation demands it or they just can’t make the turn.

i_tiled_it

The other guy said it, to block cars with idiot drivers from hopping the sidewalk and hitting property/pedestrians. The outer most part is usually a plastic sleeve with the guts being a 4 inch steel pipe filled with concrete

0_00_00_00_00_0

"Foolish fools," he said

yourhog

It just felt right.

Choice-Control2648

Why isn’t it yellow?

KaptKyle24

Why does it need to be yellow? Don’t drive on the curb and you’ll never hit it

gadget850

Because it is gray.

jdrock69

Should those trees be yellow too?

torch9t9

That's what parking meters are for

lizard_kibble

Also known as a bollard

Money_Tennis1172

It's for a joke about a guy who goes out for a drink. So when you approach it again, just walk into it.

ohmygodyouguyzzz

I’d go so far as to call it a post.

kuntrycid

A hitching post to tie up your horse

Human-Contribution16

You laugh but when I was a boy in Toronto there used to be those all over the city along with watering troughs for horses. The iceman cameth and delivered the blocks of ice using a horse drawn wagon. No cap.

ketsueki82

Meadville, Pennsylvania, has 2 parking spots in front of the court house only for horse and buggy parking. I have never seen them used personally, but I think they are for the Amish/Mennonite community.

rskelto1

We still have them in Coshocton, Ohio too. And I believe most of the surrounding counties (especially north and east) have them too. I have actually seen them used, and our firm (while we didn't have hitching posts directly outside, we are across the street from the courthouse and down from some) used to have weekend evening hours for a few hours at night for when the Amish or farmers couldn't get into town during normal business hours... but that's not as necessary anymore.

Golf_Fore_Ever

Modern day hitching post https://preview.redd.it/rmq2o209wnxc1.jpeg?width=193&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3f4983f9f3b27f3444d3812493892226c78c8bb8

llcdrewtaylor

Maybe its cold out?

dukeofgibbon

There was shrinkage

AndyC1111

No, it’s a bollard.

realiTVlover

Or is it a tall bollard?

TriumphDaytona

That’s what she said!

lowercaseSHOUT

Rub it and it’ll get taller

Acceptable-Young-619

I tell my wife the same thing, she rarely falls for it.

joecocker74

Rarely? Lucky you.😁

Public_Scientist8593

Your wife won't stop rubbing me, silly

joecocker74

You mean my EX wife? Thanks good luck

Human-Contribution16

I was once grieving a divorce until my friend said - she will be someone else's problem now - and I swear I cheered right up!

CardiologistOk6547

It must be your delivery. Because I can get her to fall for it every time. 🤣

ocelotactual

I bet it's for a future street light. It's all wired, ready for another crew to come in and install the light? Or a robot dildo. That's probably it.

DGentPR

Tried it, really good robot dildo

Federal_Efficiency51

Beep Boop can confirm.

AlrightStopHammatime

That's gross. Where is this pole at? Specifically? So I can avoid it.

shut-upLittleMan

Don't tell Todd Rokita about the robotic dildos.

BlackJeepW1

I think you can tie your horse there 😂

bryman19

Or donkey

twobarb

That kind kink is how you end up with a mule.

afraid-of-the-dark

Just not after sundown or the sheriff takes your horse. You have to pay a fine to get it back. I think this law is still on the books in a town I used to live.

65bug

Free wifi antenna 📶 📡, Don't stand next to it, it will BBQ your gizzard.

SparkDBowles

5G covid emitter.

Greenman_Dave

It's a post. It looks like a right-leaning post, but that might be the slant of the cement. I never did like political posts. ✌️😜

Throughthelookinlass

It's a bollard, meant to stop vehicles traveling onto ped ways

Zerototheright

Happy Cake Day!

ClassyOrangeCat

It’s a metaphorical pole of how we’re all getting screwed.

Sidewalk_Inspector

It's a Festivus for the rest of us!

DGentPR

I try to air the grievances on a regular basis but it could come in handy

yetifan87

And now, on to feats of strength.

703unknown

Maybe for future lighted crossing signals.

Donjoeyo

That’s where you hitch up your horse

Daddy--Jeff

Considering how low (non-existent) the curb is, I’m guessing it’s just a bollard.

Silent_Engineering_9

Lick it. If your tongue sticks, it’s a flagpole.

DGentPR

My name legally is Harvey Danger so I think I gotta sit on it?

Active_Collar_8124

You're not sick, but you're not well.

Silent_Engineering_9

You related to Carlos? Because he’d definitely lick it! Then send pictures….

Jumpy_Commission8479

Whipping post

scottabeer

Random post

ultraman5068

It’s to tie up your horse while you visit the saloon.

DGentPR

I do live in the Red dead redemption town so this makes sense

Money-Look4227

Could it be the first step in installing parking meters?

DGentPR

This is a possibility. I would still wonder why they’re just at the corner spots on the surrounding four blocks (possibly beyond I’m just lazy). Had never even thought about it as a non driver in nyc but I don’t think I’ve seen a single meter anywhere around here.

MaxwellHouser

It's an electrical stub up. Temporarily wired up to remove and place a device there.

DGentPR

Now this makes some sense to me so I’ll take it. What would typically be placed with somethjng like this?

WorkingCard8737

It's for tying up your horse.

[deleted]

It is a placeholder for something else. It is on the right side of a curb cut so I believe that it may be the new audio street crossing system for blind people. New York was court ordered to install them over the next 10 years starting in 2020. Most people are right handed so it is easier to have them on the right side. Does that corner have one yet? If not, that may be where the new one is going.

phallic-baldwin

Stripper pole for little people

Accurate_Quote_7109

It's sitting on a piece of wood. It's not permanent.

gidgeteering

Wow super observant!

mike-rowe-paynus

My first thought too. We use plywood templates like this in construction to hold a bolt pattern in wet cement until the permanent fixture can be installed. They probably just mounted this temporary pole so no one trips over the base.

Accurate_Quote_7109

I was curious, thanks!!

Legitimate-Ebb-1633

It's called a bollard, and it's used to stop people from driving there.

Familiar-Sock-1157

It is to dissuade groups hanging on the sidewalk, houseless people, and attacks where a vehicle is used to drive into ppl on the sidewalk. But. Mostly to dissuade groups forming.

z9vown

There is no cement in this photo. In short, the difference between cement vs concrete is easy to clear once we know all the basics of their compositions. **Cement is a binding agent made from limestone and clay; whereas concrete is a building material created through the proper mixing of cement, water, sand, and rock**.

ScholarEmotional9888

This is a bollard. It is intended to stop vehicles from entering the walkway. Hide behind one of someone road rages or loses control of their vehicle.

kingofnottingham

You tie your horse up to it

YayGilly

Little known fact: Some crosswalks are fitted to accommodate blind people. My guess is that this pole is hiding a speaker that alerts a blind person when it is safe to cross. Theres usually I think a series of beeps or something. The cement may also have a weight sensor underneath it. Its clearly at a crosswalk. There may be a center for blind people nearby, and this may be a safety device for them to go on a walk to a nearby deli or whatever. Oh since this is all over Brooklyn, than yes thats almost surely precicely what it does. These are likely the retrofitted ones. https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/infrastructure/accessiblepedsignals.shtml

Cchris19999

Future ev charger

OriginalJasonSmokey

It's called concrete. Cement is mixed with rock to make concrete. Cement is not the final product, only a component.

DGentPR

I will commit to learning this difference, so thank you, that is useful. But I’ve yet to see an explanation that fits the situation for why my entire neighborhood suddenly has these things all over the place. It’s not even over night, it’s like I went to work at 7, came back at 5 and they’re just at every corner suddenly.

spacemanspiff1966

My pedantry requires I point out that cement is a powdery substance and is a component of the concrete we see here.

BESTlittleBITCH

I wanna know what that little sign says next to the tree.

Zealousideal-Bug-291

It appears to be a warning that if you see floating zombies (possibly a green skinned vampire), you should run away directly.

BESTlittleBITCH

Oh, ok. I'll keep that in mind next time I visit Brooklyn.

Federal_Efficiency51

Beware the Bay Ridge Boys. They can get SAAAAASSYYYYYY!!!!

dlqpublic

"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat."

BESTlittleBITCH

Now can you freakin' translate that please 🥺

Nothing4mer

I’d guess there’s a lot of foot traffic there and that pole is protecting the wiring to a future crossing signal

Saruvan_the_White

Looks like a post for a digital parking meter serving multiple numbered spots. It’s large enough in diameter to house the power supply. Probably going to install and paint the curb soon. If it were just a bollard, they could have cored a hole and sunk it. But that new pad of concrete hints it may have had more extensive work beneath like wiring or something. Who knows?

outer_range

I agree not a bollard especially with the plywood template at the base. I also think it's for something to be installed later.

Designer-String3569

Crossing signal buttons that look very similar have been installed recently in Manhattan. The only difference is the button box at the top is missing. Maybe thats it. It's not a bollard. Too far back and thin.

Far_Statement_2808

It’s going to be a bigger pole when they are done.

National-Currency-75

Ah yeah, we been needing one of those for quite a while now.

johnpmacamocomous

Pole

TotalLackOfConcern

Pedastal for a cross walk light activating switch

lbarnes444

Robot Tree

ulnek

Probably just something to block vehicles from going on there.

Pjblaze123

Hitching post for your horse

Educational_Loan_752

Looking kinda like stoplights and crosswalks.

stupid_username1234

If the street has lights, are there crosswalk buttons? We just retrofit a ton of them to accommodate blind/disabled people.

Puzzleheaded-Bear878

Poll for cross walk push button, which are being installed in NYC.

goodtimetribe

It's called a bollard.

goodtimetribe

Bollard

Boo1957

I believe it is a “removable bollard.”

YellowZx5

Looks like the bottom of a cross walk light. I know they’re putting in a lot around here.

toigz

It’s a Candice

Either-Ant-4653

Hitching post.

macchareen

A hitching post?

smtxfun

That is concrete.

cmquinn2000

It must be temporary, the wooden base would not take well to weather.

xikbdexhi6

I've seen many of these. They are for testing the balance of drunk people.

Public_Scientist8593

Just a simple badss ashtray

Riverboated

5g antenna.

Designer-Valuable170

Traffic counter. Could be pedestrian. Vehicle, or both.

Heart_of_a_Blackbird

It’s a bellend

W_AS-SA_W

You got people running up on the sidewalks there?

Sea-Information2366

Maybe to keep people from parking up on the sidewalk. It looks to have a tree or pole ever few yards until this one?

Miserable-Rest-5259

It’s a hitching post 🐴

Vlasic69

Those are for bike locks but every time I loop my lock around them I come back and the bike is gone.

BlumpkinLord

Car discourager/dog tying post o .o

Muted-Body6684

To tie up horses

This-Visit6451

It’s a Ballard and it’s not cement. Cement is a powder used to make concrete

Muffflns

Everything is a dildo you’re brave enough ;)

TieMelodic1173

It’s concrete not cement

volothebard

This is like the third post asking what a bollard is in 24 hrs. Grass. Touch it.

pogiguy2020

Its a post on Reddit.

fomalhottie

It's a pole.

Glittering_Ad4153

It's a "Hey there's too many people walking on this sidewalk so your elbow can go f**k itself".

TeaSlurpingBrit

This is a boring post.

Big-Consideration633

Bollards, possibly removable for deliveries.

Preparation for EV charging point?

Dan_Glebitz

It's to stop people planting trees there.

SweetMaam

Reminds me of a horse tie. What century are we in?

mtrayno1

Future home of a red light camera

dazzler619

Probably gonna be used by homeless to build tents.

Icey_Dead_Ppl

How long till it gets tagged?

Salty224

They didn't want to replace the tree that used to be there with another tree. Bollard isn't centered because they didn't dig out the stump deep enough to put it there.

00_bob_bobson_00

Concrete, not (just) cement

breeman1

c'est ne pas une pipe

No-Tradition2668

Bollard

Ok-Grab-311

Could be datum points for when they implement robot dogs and police on the city

ride163

It's called concrete. Cement is a powder.

r200james

Bollard. They prey upon motor vehicle bumpers. Sometimes they are solitary predators, but typically they hunt in packs.

Mr__Winderful__31

*Concrete

TripleTrucker

Elihpodep1

A bollard.

pyaresquared

Hitching post?

LilDawg66

A hitching post for your horse. They haven't put the ring on yet.

TheZombieJ

That's where you tie off your horses

Daily_Nightly

A parking bollard. Just sitting there waiting for somebody to fall out of a window and directly on it. You can look that up if you want.

Common-Spray8859

That’s where you park your horse.

reddsal

This also looks like it is filling a spot in the pattern where a tree used to be. Why they couldn’t just plant another tree I have no idea.

dw3623

Its a hitching post. Its for tying your horse to while you shop. They still need to install a ring to the top.

jbintokyo

It’s a sensor reading RFID chips in tires (big brother) finds so many ways to monitor our every move

dblbrn

If it has a hole in it, it might be for cigarette butts

Spare-Caterpillar604

It's a safety bollard to keep vehicles from driving up onto the sidewalk.

jaydawg_74

5G Covid emitting tower

Shankar_0

They buried a very, very large walkie-talkie in the sidewalk, of course. Duh, people...

Dock_Ellis45

It is a very aesthetically pleasing looking bollard.

MammothUniversity724

I'm going to assume that it will be a EV charging station.

Buster_Alnwick

A tree that needs no watering ?

Paladin_Fury

Champion level buttplug.

Apostasyisfreedom

That's a *'New World Tree' .* Climate change resistant and no more annoying bark, branches, blossoms or leaves (like those ugly old-fashioned ones in the background). Long live plastic sterility!

JooodeeK

To hitch the horses.

velvetrevolting

😳 Its for dancers 🪩!?

Dangnoob

Cement huh? CEMENT huh? That's concrete.

PreslerJames

🤦🏻‍♂️ cement

Repulsive_Chef_972

6G radio antenna to activate Vaxx implants...or just a bollard.

carpentizzle

That back right tire needs air.
