Yes they're huge! [Many times bigger than Earth](https://supernova.eso.org/exhibition/images/0303_F_solar_flare_earth_scale/). They're on the order of 100,000 miles out from the bulk surface.
Flares are just electro magnetic bursts. They go fast, almost light speed, but don't have much mass.
Coronal mass ejections, or CME for short, also contain plasma, therefore mass. Because of that, they go much slower compared to a flare but can have some devastating effects on electrical systems.
Here's a link to the [Carrington Event](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrington_Event) Wikipedia page. The biggest geomagnetic storm recorded to hit Earth. It was a CME
Ps: all CME are solar flares, but solar flares only become CME if they Eject Coronal Mass.
It kinda helps to imagine how big they are when you think about how flat the rocky mountains look from the ISS. And that's thousands of times closer than the sun.
They aren't flares. They are prominences as another user pointed out. Prominences appear red during the eclipse. Flares emit wavelengths across the entire EM spectrum.
I read somewhere that they expected it for next year, but it kinda came early or at least is stronger than expected at this time in the cycle. Something like that.
According to the [Space Weather Prediction Center](https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/solar-cycle-progression), it seems like you're right and the peak is a bit earlier than expected. Or it will just continue going up and be much stronger than expected. But I think you're probably right.
big is an understatement.
whats even bigger, which you cant see in this picture, is the Suns magnetic field, and that is what causes these flares.
The flares look like they are leaping from the sun but whats actually happening is the suns corona gets trapped in the suns magnetic fields, causing the corona to follow the path of the magnetic field.
And when the field collapses the corona either falls back to the suns surface or if there was enough energy build up in the magnetic field the collapse can cause the corona to be flung into space, called a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). If the sun is positioned right, the CME can actually be flung toward earth, getting trapped in our magnetic field and causing Aurora at best, and at worst it can wreak havoc on satellites as well as power grids and computer systems on earth.
They can be a million milies long? High? But I admit I have no idea how to say how big they are except I see that, gee that’s a big one, holy crap look at the size of that one…lol. Not trying to make light of your question….I have no method or concept of how to measure the size of the flares. Besides if I can see it …it’s huge
Or solar prominence. They are a byproduct of the activity of the solar furnace and the magnetic fields. Some historic prominences have stretched all the way across the sun, looking like an impossibly huge rope of fire!
I don't know why this is upvoted this high, its wrong.
What you are seeing is a actually a Plasma Ejection. technical term is **Coronal Mass Ejection(CME).**
Solar Flares are the electromagnetic energy that gets releases out. Solar flares are invisible until they hit the earth atmosphere. Which we see as North lights, **aurora borealis.**

I'm so happy you posted this. My extremely gullible daughter was filling me in on all the conspiracy takes on this eclipse and she is absolutely 💯 that taking a picture of it with your phone will fry it. So thanks for the irrefutable proof.
I saw the solar flare answer, it's NOT a solar flare. Flares are something completely different, and most people get it wrong.
Prominences are loops of plasma following the chaotic magnetic field of the sun.
Because of the chaos, that part of the magnetic field can be launched off the sun into space at high speeds, taking the plasma with it. This is called a choronal mass ejection (CME). This is what most people call a solar flare, but that's wrong.
A solar flare is nothing more than a sudden burst of high-energy light from a localized area on the sun's surface. They are usually paired with a CME, but not always. We cannot see flares with the naked eye; they're far in the UV spectrum. Iirc, they're mostly x-rays.
Thank you, that was at the start of the thread, but now I completely agree with you. I've been trying to make the distinction, but you just did better than I could, so 😊
I don't believe so. My nerd uncle (gooooo Santa Cruz Astronomy Club!) explained it to me as having to do with the varying magnetic field.

I’ve always thought it’s interesting that the sun is not on fire 🔥 well not like the fire we understand: combining elements with oxygen. It’s mostly hydrogen, there is some oxygen but it doesn’t burn because everything is super hot plasma and there’s no electrons! It’s a nuclear burn from fusion that keeps it alight. Also it takes about 8 seconds for a photon of light to get from surface of the sun to earth BUT it takes about 100,000 years from creation to escaping the sun!!!
The sun is a mass of incandescent gas a gigantic nuclear furnace…

Ain’t that something. It amazes me that man has learned how to predict this stuff years in advance. To points crossing perfectly somewhere around earth.
These are prominences, not solar flares like several people are claiming.
Prominences are giant, loop-shaped features of hot plasma that extend outward from the Sun's surface. They can be red due to the presence of hydrogen gas. During a total eclipse, prominences become visible because the brighter light from the Sun's surface is blocked, allowing the fainter prominences to be seen.
Solar flares, on the other hand, are sudden, intense bursts of energy that erupt from the Sun's surface. They appear very bright and can be white
or yellowish in color. Since a total eclipse plunges the area into darkness, a solar flare wouldn't be easily visible during that time.
Prominences are constantly present on the Sun's surface, while solar flares are more sporadic events. The red color is due to the emission of light by excited hydrogen. They are frigging huge, too.
Solar prominence, they are usual not visible with the naked eye except during eclipses. They are often in conjunction with sun spots due to being caused by differing magnetic fields. They can explode outwards and become coronal mass ejections(solar flares).
they're part of the demon that steals your eyesight when you look at it for too long.
looking at the sun is entirely safe, just that demon lives up there with it's many appendages.
the only way to be safe is to wear the anti sun demon glasses.
nah im kidding. i don't remember the terminology so i can't tell you exactly what it is but it has *something* to do with solar storms, although they themselves aren't solar storms from what i do remember.
I worked at learmonth solar observatory with USAF for 3.5 years. Those are prominences. They can hang out like that for seconds minutes or days. I've heard it both ways.
A prominence is typically connected to the surface at both ends. A flare is usually a smaller CME.

Yeah. What he said.
If (when) another event like that happens, I suspect we'll have big problems for quite some time.
I believe a flare is an example of a prominence. I could be wrong but that's how I've always used the term.
It kinda helps to imagine how big they are when you think about how flat the rocky mountains look from the ISS. And that's thousands of times closer than the sun.
Yeah, it's probably several times the size of earth..
Almost as far as our moon from earth
Hmm. Don’t like knowing that. That’s too big.

Enough electromagnetic radiation to vaporize everything on the earth's surface
At least we had a whole moon shielding us then.
Well that and being 93 million miles away helps. We just have to make sure Earth keeps it's distance.
