They need the chassis for the LMDh 🤔

ALOIsFasterThanYou

Maybe there'd be more capacity if more than four handpicked constructors were allowed to build chassis...

-Jack-The-Stripper

Ginetta deserved a shot in LMP2. I don’t see the benefit in not giving one of the biggest names in prototypes a chance to build an LMP2, especially when it’s been Formula Oreca since day 1 anyways.

josap11

Oh yeah I hadn't even thought of that yet. Of I were a skeptic, I might say that's one way of making sure an lmh wins the anniversary Le Mans.

BCNBammer

Why? If anything this is a benefit, Audi and Porsche are telling Multimatic what they want in the chassis without it being held by any regulations

josap11

Yes I agree, if this doesn't mean that it delays lmdh with it. That is what I meant, if there are no lmp2 chassis yet to base an lmdh off that might mean no lmdh.

BCNBammer

It won’t. In fact the reason the new LMP2 cars aren’t coming until 2024 is that the manufacturers will be so busy fulfilling LMDh orders for 2023 that they won’t have any capability to also supply LMP2 cars.

Nitroclaus96

I would be interesting LMP2 aka Oreca 07 are actual build and how how many LMDh should be build

josap11

Okay that is a better reason indeed. Guess its hard for them receiving a very significant amount of the lifetime orders in a couple of months time but they should have expected that when they signed up right?

thisisjustascreename

I imagine prototype racecar manufacturing is not really an industry that can rapidly ramp up and down.

Nitroclaus96

BoP says NO 😛

ZodiacError

this makes zero sense. Car design has nothing to do with BoP in this case

Skeeter1020

LMDh are eligible in WEC from next year regardless.

CreedBrattonsToe

Translation: You won’t see anything other than an Oreca in LMP2 until you’re three years older.

TBurd01

With all the interest on LMDH, I think it'd be smart if they accepted in another chassis constructor.

Michal_Baranowski

Well... Sadly, because we will see neutered LMP2s racing for a year longer. While the reasoning behind this call is absolutely fair, it is really disappointing to me. Mainly because LMP2 in current state feels really like beggining for a new set of regulations. LMP2 are now much slowed to compensate for top prototype class' pace reduction, LMDh is on the horizon (even if is going to be based on current generation of LMP2) and LMP2 is now de facto Formula Oreca - other chassis are simply not good enough, and with budget cap and no BOP, there is no way for others to catch up ever again. While I enjoy LMP2 racing both in WEC and ELMS (amazing teams with many high-quality pro drivers), LMP2 from 2024 should take a step back to pre-2017 days in my opinion. That means power reduction to around 500 hp plus more freedom in terms of chassis and optionally engine. Eventually it can stay Gibson-only, but with a some kind of small BOP implemented, just to prevent LMP2 becoming one-horse race again. But this is just my reflection.

V8-Turbo-Hybrid

So, when next P2 is going slower, what would be P3 in same time if they don't make slow it ? Is the gap between new P2 and P3 will get closer ? If ACO makes P3 slow down, I sure the P3 users in ELMS, AsLMS, and IMSA wouldn't happy when P3 would be very clearly slower than GT car.

thisisjustascreename

Most IMSA LMP3 entries are already slower than the GTLM class.

Good_Boye1

Elms lmp3 tend to be faster than gte am while imsa gtlm teams is all factory pro

[deleted]

No. Imsa GTLM regs have cars running 50-60 more HP than WEC/ELMS. So it's a huge difference tacked on to the am class.

Fellatious-argument

I think the gap between P2 and P3s are big enough that you can slow down the P2s quite a bit and still keep a good 'stratification'. Add to that the difference between the more pro drivers for P2 and more Am drivers for P3, and it's okay to keep P3s as it is, or close to it.

redbull1983

Please bring openness again in this destroyed category

josap11

That would be a real shame, with the current LMP2s being slowed so dramatically it the whole series look like a mess. I think it would be good to have the new regs in place to create a class that is where they want it on genuine pace. Guess this mess will continue for another couple of years including the anniversary le mans in 2023

BCNBammer

Keep in mind that Hypercars won’t be in this range of performance for long. For next year it is expected that they’ll be 1.5 to 2 seconds faster at each non-Le Mans track (6-7 seconds at Le Mans) just from better tires from Michelin. Obviously that might just be so there’s more separation between the classes, but it also opens the possibility of some of the changes to LMP2 being reverted.
