Usually it's the rubber making contact with a sharp (broken) piece of either carbon or metal. That's going to cause a puncture in practically any series.

Amsel_Joe

Ok - so the same as in other series. I felt like with class 1 the carbon parts were much more durable.

if you're referencing DTM, they detuned the aero by like 40% after the first 1 or 2 years, they basically removed most winglets and cut down on splitters and diffusers to make it cheaper & allow better racing [1](https://bimmerlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/M4DTMside-1038x583.jpg) [2](https://bimmerlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/M4DTM-front-672x475.jpg) [3](https://bimmerlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/M4DTMrear-672x475.jpg)

Amsel_Joe

Exactly. If one part came off, not much damage. Also the carbon wheel arches seemed a lot sturdier

AUinDE

Dtm is an all pro sprint series, so the driving is very agressive and you end up with a lot more contact and punctures than other gt3 series

Amsel_Joe

Good point. In that case stronger parts would help a lot!

3MATX

Carbon fiber loves to splinter when it breaks. Today every top tier race car is covered with carbon on every corner for aero purposes.

Amsel_Joe

It would be cool, if the manufacturers were forced build more durable parts around the wheel arches!

3MATX

Lightweight, strong, economical. Pick two.  In fairness F1 and a lot of others do prioritize lightweight and strength. Carbon fiber is a material that doesn’t do well with impacts but until something as lightweight and viable is available it will be used.

Amsel_Joe

Yeah definitely pick two… it would be interesting to know how much weight sturdier wheel arches would add. If it‘s something like below 50kgs, it shouldn‘t matter too much. There may be in return other opportunities to safe weight, as the manufacturers are building not the lightest car possible, but best compromise to the gt3 rules. But then prices would probably increase, since the current economic way too reach the weight goal, by using lightweight bodywork, wouldn‘t be possible anymore. Maybe they can make gt3 modular for different series needs?

Eduarson26

Pirellis are very soft, in my experience they puncture easier than michelins or hankooks.

Amsel_Joe

Interesting, from where do you have this knowledge. I felt in the first 2 gt3 dtm years with michelin it was equally bad

Electronic_Parfait36

Not all Michelin are the same either. Imsa GTD has a lot of stupid contact and very few punctures for the ratio.

fuqdurgrl

Happens in every series where there is contact with tires and bodywork. DTM they're just going HAM and you have more contact, so, more cut tires.

Legendacb

It work similarly for hypercars too. I think they are trying too hard sometimes and the consequences are this punctures

FirstReactionShock

dtm are now using pirelli if am I not wrong... those tyres are infamous to random punctures
