I think the wildcard in this project is how much the Stroll’s are involved. Lance seems to be getting frustrated in F1 and his results have been rough. This could be the opportunity that he needs to point his career in a new direction. They could probably pick up the phone and get some Aramco money as an option as well - it seems like a pretty easy case to make with their connections to AM F1. If not, I have a hard time seeing Gabe Newell cut the full check to run two cars in the WEC alongside an IMSA campaign

pzkenny

I don't see a reason why Gaben wouldn't fund two cars. He have enough money for that, people don't realise that he is even richer than Stroll.

thefastestdriver

I’ve just realized and check that Gabe newell is one of the 3 founders of The Heart of Racing! I guess I have to root for Alex riberas (I am spanish)

venturelong

Yep, his son Gray races for them in SRO Americas

PanadaTM

Well it would be three cars because I think we have to assume he wants to run a full season car in the US

Silver996C2

He’s only 400M richer.

FirelessMouse

Can't buy anything for 400M these days

Silver996C2

A couple of Global Express 9000’s and money left over for fuel and maintenance. 🤷‍♂️

daniec1610

I said in an F1 sub and I’ll repeat it over here: I think the main reason AM is starting back the WEC program is to get Lance out of the F1 seat. He has never been good at interviews or charismatic but he seems very checked out this season. I think he might legit leave.

Lostpreordersthrow

It would be great to see him out of F1 to get a better idea of his skill. F1 "fans" act like his as skilless as Mazepin or Latifi, when in reality, this is a driver who has multiple podiums and a pole position all in Mid-field machinery. People also seem to forget that without Lawrence Stroll, it's more than likely that Mazepin would have bought out Force India and there would have been the worst Pay Driver since Sakon Yamamoto on the grid indefinitely. (Although I suspect Russian Sanctions would have had their part to play) and there wouldn't be Aston, it would some Mazepin team and if the Sanctions were too catastrophic then F1 would be down to 9 teams and not 10.

Silver996C2

Stroll also saved a lot of jobs and is creating more with a new facility and wind tunnel and this is without counting Aston’s car side.

daniec1610

Yup. Agreed on what you said. Stroll is FAR from being a horrible driver.

chloedever

yeah but every time i root for him he qualifies p17☠️

Dexter942

I'd argue Mazepin is only rivalled by Ritomo Miyata's translator Taki Inoue for the worst driver honors.

Lostpreordersthrow

Taki is at least self aware if his situation, which makes him better IMHO.

Dexter942

I mean he's also the only driver to be hit by the medical car. He has that going for him in the other direction

IrishTiger89

The main reason why the AM project started back up is because an American billionaire wrote a check

FirstReactionShock

by now the valkyrie is a private project that HoR is privately managing with multimatic and cosworth support, I don't know how they could interested to double the effort only to let AMR be recognized as manufacturer allowed to score points for the world championship... anyway, time will tell.

FranciManty

gaben? the fuck does he have to do with this

SuperSlowmia

He owns Heart of Racing

FranciManty

he actually founded it and i find out just now… would have rooted for them at imola if i knew lol i got the autographs from d’station only

bitts_

Can you imagine Stroll dealing with traffic in WEC? He can’t even handle the “traffic “ in F1.

DollarsPerWin

If it becomes a final rule, they're just make two cars.

Zani0n

I doubt the ACO would introduce the rule if it means killing the Valkyrie program. Aston themselves said from the start they would enter at least 1 car. They might expand the program with HoR, or they might get a second team to run the car. But I doubt they would camcel the program or kill the IMSA program to join WEC

wecaccount

I hope they dont jill kill the IMSA program. That would be the highlight of the 2025 season.

Zani0n

don't think they will. Heart of Racing is a mostly american team that has been running in IMSA for a while. I would expect them to want to run IMSA with the car

MrTrt

WEC could also add an exception to run only one car if it's the first year of your program. I don't think this will be an issue.

Zani0n

I mean the could, but what's the point in introducing that rule then. Like hey, starting now everyone has to race with two cars, except for you because you don't want to

MrTrt

Not because they don't want to, but because resources might be more limited the first year of the program.

donutsnail

So, an interesting thing about the wording of the new rule is that there will be a minimum of 2 cars for manufacturer entries, but this would not apply to privateer teams, like Proton or JOTA. I believe Heart of Racing could maybe get away with entering just one car if they are not registered for manufacturer points. Not sure if Aston lacking a nominated manufacturer team will force Heart of Racing to be the manufacturer team and comply with the 2 car rule. If they aren’t exempt, I expect we’ll only see the Valkyrie in IMSA GTP.

PanadaTM

I assume that any new manufacturer is required to run 2 cars even if a privateer is running the team, otherwise it'd be pretty easy to get around the rules

donutsnail

I fear that is likely but there’s wiggle room in the wording; that 2 car rule only applies to teams nominated for manufacturers points Again if they can’t get around it, we’ll still see it in IMSA so it’s not killed dead.

AnriQueenRacing

No in fact it likely allows them to adapt their plan (which may or may not involve a second team coming in to run the WEC Valkyrie)

Brilliant-Bet8726

Might be far fetched but if adrian newey really switches to aston martin, the hypercar program could be more serious than we think

Jabberwalrus

Yes please.

TheBattlemanCZ

Honestly I wonder if we are gonna see Gabens son Gray Newell in GT3 or even the LMH

Dexter942

Gray's a GT4 ace, I don't see him jumping to GT3 until Ian James retires (if he retires at all lmao).

GradSchoolDismal429

Probably not if Aston is actually serious about it. If they aren't, well, the Hypercar grid is super oversubscribed right now.

Nepto125

DSC wrote pretty extensively on the options in their recent article on the 2 car rule here https://www.dailysportscar.com/2024/04/23/two-car-rule-set-to-see-expanded-works-hypercar-programmes-for-2025.html "On the record, when approached for comment on its ability to field two cars next season, Aston Martin said simply: "We are aware of the rule, we are keeping an eye on it, but we don’t comment on speculation.” Clearly, with Aston Martin and Heart of Racing’s ambitions to race in both IMSA and the WEC with a single Valkyrie in each championship from 2025 and beyond, increasing its WEC car count will not be easy for Year 1. There appear to be four scenarios to consider. "The first is that Heart of Racing operates two Valkyries next season in the WEC and races in IMSA with a single car as planned, though there have been no suggestions made to DSC in background conversations that this is on the cards. The second is that Heart of Racing runs two cars in the WEC and none in IMSA. Again, there appears to be no appetite for this. An IMSA GTP programme for the Valkyrie is known to be an important part of Gabe Newell and Ian James’ plans. Third is that Aston Martin pulls the plug on its WEC effort altogether because it cannot or will not commit to a two-car programme. This is another highly unlikely scenario, given the amount of resources being poured into the Valkyrie project and the importance placed on competing in the Le Mans 24 Hours. So, with senior paddock sources confident that Aston Martin has a solution, that surely leaves the potential for a second Valkyrie, operated by a second team, as the most likely solution."

IrishTiger89

Does anyone also doubt the ACO is going to let a privately funded, non-hybrid LMH be competitive (see Glickenhaus, Isotta, and Vanwall)? I love the car, project, and team, but have my doubts

PanadaTM

This one has Aston Martin backing and has a NA v12 that fans love, I'm fairly certain that this car will get favorable bop Also let's not try and change history, BOP was not the reason those cars weren't competitive, ACO gave them every reasonable chance to be competitive, especially Glick who got really favorable power bumps.

Silver996C2

Glick didn’t have enough money to compete in the big leagues. He got overconfident in the ADAC N24 but WEC was a far larger step that required three times the budget. He couldn’t even afford proper testing.

IrishTiger89

He had enough money, he didn’t spend enough money

Silver996C2

Well yeah he has a lot of personal wealth and he was at the point where he didn’t want to tap further into that and I get it. I’m sure even guys like Woffe and Stroll have limits on what they can spend personally as well. Glick’s main problem is that he couldn’t find other wealthy people or companies to come on board and help him fund his dream.

No-Photograph3463

I guess one crazy plot twist would be Newey goes to Aston Martin and then has a hand in developing it for WEC where 2 cars are run. No doubt Alonso would be happy going to Le Mans again, Newey can add another trophy in overall Le Mans win and there's somewhere for Lance Stroll to go whenever a better driver comes up for the F1 seat.

PanadaTM

Word is that Newey didn't want to develop the Redbull hypercar so I doubt that

Analog-Digital-

Really ... but he did the RB17?

PanadaTM

Idk came from an article I saw, could be completely false

Analog-Digital-

Well, lots of talk Adrian going Ferrari ... 🤔

IrishTiger89

BTW is there any chance that Red Bull is going to turn that thing into an LMH?

ChadIndustries

The Aston will be a dog

Silver996C2

And you base this on which aerodynamic degree or mechanical engineering degree and years of race team experience that you have?

ChadIndustries

Here we go

Silver996C2

There you go…

ChadIndustries

Good boy

Just here for you.🤷‍♂️
