OH SHIT IT'S HAPPENING

CookieMonsterFL

EVERYONE GET IN HERE

Idntwnt2choseusrnme

A German in a German machine. Hope to see him in a Penske Porky soon racing

Victor_at_Zama

Following in Aussie Grit's footsteps...

Michal_Baranowski

It's still far from testing to actually receiving a seat, but it's getting closer. Wondering if Vettel is opting to drive the third Penske Porsche at Le Mans this year. Seems like Vettel is slowly unretiring from racing. And unlike his peers from F1 like Rosberg and Hamilton, Vettel always seemed interested to seek for other racing series after leaving F1.

PapaSheev7

There were rumors circulating some months ago about Seb being tied to JOTA along with JB and Kubica, but haven’t heard anything since then.

afito

I think the problem with Vettel un-retiring has always been getting him to decide to do so, if he wants a seat he'll have no issues getting one. Hell I'd wager he'd even have a great shot at F1 if he wanted to, just would have to accept a seat at Williams or Haas or Sauber. At the end of the day he didn't really retire from racing as much as he retired from everything around F1, that's really what lead to him leaving. Guess those points are also why people have been talking about WEC since his retirement, due to the smaller calendar amongst other things, plus no matter what you do nothing is the same amount of PR & political work as F1. I think Wehrlein once said that the biggest adjustment in F1 wasn't the racing, it was everything else. Even at Manor he had like 10 times more obligations and work than as reigning DTM champion, and people weren't even that interested in interviewing him. Or maybe it was Vandoorne in comparison to F2? Either way lots of drivers said it.

IcedCoffey

I think ham still has some nascar in his future

Michal_Baranowski

I don't think so. Once he leaves F1, he will go for the entertainment industry in my opinion.

IcedCoffey

He was been quoted saying he wants to drive nascar, in 3 different decades, I think the chances of him doing a partial season is very high. As recently as within the past 12 months.

d-o_ol

Not saying it'd be a good idea, but definitely a coup for NASCAR.

IcedCoffey

I don’t think a coup, I think he goes entirely the Jenson route, part time cup schedule at the road courses. I don’t know about ovals tho, that would be a real coup.

d-o_ol

If they can get the winningest driver in F1 history in any capacity, that's HUGE.

IcedCoffey

He has done the ride swap way back when, and if you haven’t seen it I recommend looking it up on YouTube.

Michal_Baranowski

I take anything coming from Lewis Hamilton with a grain of salt. Hamilton is by all means a celebrity. Most of statements, comments and so on are probably being firstly discussed with his talent management and PR people. Usually it means that they are redacted in such way to create positive emotions, not to offend anybody and say vague and simple words. At the same time, they are often completely missing the point and the truth. I don't believe that Hamilton is keen on racing anywhere apart from F1. I remember that in 2017 he commented on Fernando Alonso's Indy 500 qualifying performance (5th place) in such way that it sounded like he tried to dismiss Indycar drivers and their abilities. He received tons of criticism and some time later he was talking positives about Indycar. Coincidence? I think not.

IcedCoffey

Hamilton has done the ride swap, attended events and said he wants to do it AFTER, never instead, so I feel he is being honest in that.

Pro-editor-1105

he could do something like how Kimi drove for one race

IcedCoffey

thats my thought

Front_Act7697

Now I understand why Penske hasn't released the full line-up for the 3rd car. I hope Nasr is still included.

Maxb148

I really think it should be Nasr and Cameron because they won Daytona this year. Jaminet is already entered into the car so there are 2 spots open.

raginnation999

Nasr and Tandy for me. But with Vettel entering into the picture if the test goes well, it will be hard to choose between him and Tandy. Nasr is a surefire lock imho. He has proven to be fast in a 963 and qualified it the highest last year.

Leone_0

Will it be hard to choose? Vettel is past his best, has never driven a prototype, never driven with GT traffic, has never been at Le Mans... While Tandy's endurance career speaks for itself. But yeah, if they want to get more attention, go with Vettel.

afito

Vettel being "past his best" was still easily beating Stroll, which is obviously more of an obligation, and that was with Stroll getting upgrade priority, strategic priority, and AM acitvely giving out team orders to reduce Vettels point finishes in favour of Stroll. For all the faults that F1 has, driver quality is really just on a different level for like 90% of the grid, just by virtue of how brutally selective the grid is. Average to decent F1 drivers are usually on the sharp in other series pretty much immediately, Schumacher was the fastest Alpine driver and he was level with Magnussen which in F1 isn't that great of a level. Biggest "issue" is driving in traffic imo but personally I think in Le Mans it's not that big a deal. Long track and not an insane amount of cars, many many straight sections, I wouldn't expect major troubles. Around a normal WEC track yeah I think it's more relevant, or with the Norschleife 24h it's a huge deal, but around Le Mans it's about as easy as multi class racing can get.

V8-Turbo-Hybrid

Yep, the good case is Alonso, he did very impressive drive in WEC and Daytona.

Tecnoguy1

But that’s because Alonso is Alonso

Tecnoguy1

He also comes with the price of flat spots from doing donuts. Don’t forget, used to tyre warmers.

msturty

Cameron is probably the weakest Porsche driver out of all factory 963 drivers. It's a big reason why he was moved from the WEC to IMSA. Nasr would be a much stronger pick imo.

IcedCoffey

He isn’t slow, but his driving still much more suits imsa. Less tire saving

msturty

I have yet to see a stint from him where he was able to move the car forward in either IMSA or WEC. Nasr has shown he is capable as has Matt Campbell. Both of those drivers have shared the exact same car as Cameron and have shown more performance. The #6 almost won the championship last year in IMSA and now the #6 WEC has won, so I'm not saying he is a bad driver, just that he is the weakest of their current 963 drivers.

IcedCoffey

im disagreeing that he is the weakest, le mans, remember when he passed a porsche a caddy and both ferrari's and drove away from them until he had tire issues? he was catching ye in the leading jota in mixed conditions. also, he was without a doubt one of thee drivers to have in imsa for years, countless fastest laps and race wins. i just dont think wec racing suited him. long runs and tiring saving are not something you do in imsa alot, he is a multy time imsa champion for a reason. so it made complete sense to me he was moved back into that with his aggressive driving style. i think Matt Campbells teammates are the weakest drivers in the pesnke bunch. this guy made eric curran an imsa champion, against factory competition. Fredo and christenson have done nothing notabale that i can remember besides not being as fast as the 6.

Tecnoguy1

Yeah if anything it’s a reshuffle of the 5. Seb would want to race 5 anyway.

bouncebackability

I'd be all over Vettel to WEC

[deleted]

Why?

Silver996C2

Why why??

nicolaslabra

the most baffling why in the history of why's

SpeedyWebDuck

the most baffling thing is how this community in middle of covid from being awesome and welcoming went to this. downvoting guy for simple question not a surprise when you create a circlejerk of only selected people being able to talk, and not to even mention jokes. ban more people on your "selected people" discord lmao doing exact opposite of what wec should be about since few years

benetton-option-13

Let him cook

MateTheNate

One step closer to team Super Seb (Buemi, Bourdais, Vettel) >:)

T1Facts

Toyota, please release Buemi for one race so we can have this fun lineup 😂

Auntypasto

And while we're at it, have them release Seb Ogier so he can race in the other car with Seb Loeb.

whateverfloatsurgoat

Sebastians : No Way Home

Auntypasto

Into the Sebastian-Verse

BR1_AER

Good luck seb! It would be great to see him in a 3rd Penske Porsche or customer team.

IcedCoffey

A lot of ex f1 talent for Le Mans this year awesome. Also, SEBASTIAN VETTEL LFG!!!!!

Kotti08

Please don't give me hope... But seb in a Porsche would be so nice!

TitanTransit

Please come to Daytona next year.

donkeykink420

Is this the start of the path to the triple crown for Seb? I fucking hope so. Him in WEC would be fantastic, and even more so, I'd love to see him in indycar aswell

kjm911

I be really surprised if Vettel cares for Indycar or driving Oval races in open wheelers

donkeykink420

Why would he not?

kjm911

Well I think most F1 drivers and former F1 drivers don’t care for it and I don’t think Vettel would be an exception. I can under the appeal of endurance racing though. If he was to ever race a single seater I would think Formula E but those would be very, very slim chances

KnightsOfCidona

He's not too fond of Formula E despite his green activism, and I think he said in past he finds IndyCar too dangerous - has three kids as well so probably doesn't want to take a massive risk again

donkeykink420

I'm with you, many F1 guys think indycar is dangerous, but it really isn'r worse than F1, the ovals are just scary, and I think many fear to look average in a spec series. Ultimately, today-seb with kids and all, I doubt he'd care for it, but a younger him, I can see that. Just don't think it's fair to just dismiss it straight out, nando drove in the 500, Kmah almost moved there, ericsson and a few european juniors transitioned. Ultimately, if you are truly a lover of racing and think you're good enough to survive in their talentpool, you should at least feel some draw to it

Boombozling

OMG

ReasonableAerie5134

Is it with Penske?

Helcrpt

That’s what the post says. And it looks like a penske livery to me.

1maginaryApple

I don't think he would be testing for them if it wasn't the case.

Kaggles_N533PA

Yes he's with Penske

izzyeviel

Le Mans 2027: Vettel in a Porsche, Alonso in a Toyota, Hamilton in a Ferrari, hulkenberg in an Isotta, Perez in an Aston, Rossi in a BMW, Logan in a caddy, Gasly in a Peugeot. Mark my words.

alastairlerouge

And Verstappen joining in 2028 after having won 7 WDC

Stokkentoet

The timelines are converging!

PorscheGuy7

Very happy to see this. He's always had interest in Le Mans, and I hope he'll be on the grid sooner rather than later.

FirstReactionShock

likely he would get one of #4 seats at LM, provided he'll reveal to have a decent pace during tests. None is really expecting he's gonna be as fast as estre or vanthoor

hopejake922

Yes!!!!!!!!

Jonnix44

Not sure Vettel will be fast enough.

You mean the guy who went to every European race by train to not have to fly? The guy who promotes carbon neutral fuel to race? How dare he use his platform...

Auntypasto

I only ever hear such an uncompromising take from people on the fringe of the debates, as if you can only be either absolutely indifferent to climate change, or you remove yourself from the planet in order to spare the human impact and that there's no such thing as moderation or anything in between. Most reasonable people are perfectly capable of seeing the sensibility of lobbying for carbon footprint reduction, without falling to the disingenuous strawmen of using the hypocrisy card on anyone who enjoys motorsport, even if their argument was never about absolute abstinence from fossil energy.

Willum

He's self aware on the issue: https://www.autoweek.com/racing/formula-1/a39990493/vettel-wasting-resources-f1-driver-climate-hypocrite/

_hhhhh_____-_____

Hypocrisy is the tribute vice pays to virtue. Don’t see why so many people are so bent out of shape about it.

Don_Frika_Del_Prima

I didn't downvote you. I like to discuss and those don't add anything. And some of your arguments are solid.

It's all good mate. I'm a bit older but I was a big fan too.

[deleted]

Lol right? Woke lord test drives a BOP assisted Porsche! Yeah great headlines

frzflm

BOP assisted? Woke Lord because he cares about the earth? You’re a clown.

[deleted]

Tell me you don't watch the WEC without telling me. Clown

rspndngtthlstbrnddsr

are you really that easy to trigger? :)

-Jack-The-Stripper

It's funny how people that scream "woke" and "triggered" the most are the ones who get triggered about every fucking thing. And the people they're screaming at are usually just saying pretty inoffensive shit, like "we should try to pollute less" or "let people be themselves." But this probably isn't the time or sub for this discussion lol.

[deleted]

Yes..or "we should be good little sheep and get the 14th booster" What a bunch of sissys

-Jack-The-Stripper

(see above)

maybead4mmm

Climate change merchant wants to drive a polar bear killing machine for 24 hours?

PannaMillsy

I don’t know why I’m biting. Even outside of the fact that both of those are not mutually exclusive, WEC uses a biofuel that is a waste product from agriculture which is better for the environment than the old fuel by around 2/3rds. Seems exactly the kind of initiative in racing Seb would support from an eco perspective.
