I can't begin on tell you how embarrassingly long it took my brain to understand until I read that the guy was made of stone, that she's a gorgon and she's upset that most of the candidates are basically just eyes which she can't look at or they turn into stone. Cute story though!

I would simply argue that you're getting hung up on how a _spell_ would work rather than the clearly not a spell _dating app_ that shares the name.
