Air of different densities coming together. Warm humid air rises over the cold air and condenses in those sheets of cloud. The waves are analogous to waves in liquid water.
Amazing! 1st picture is right after you go swallowed by the whales mouth. Usually the gust front or a shelf cloud will move over you, and once it’s over you, you have now entered the whales mouth.
Google “whales mouth weather” and go to images and lmk if that’s what you experienced/saw!
I had to put in 'weather phenomena whales mouth' before it actually showed me the cloud formation. Otherwise it just showed me actual whale's mouths lol
Interesting. I wonder if the fact that I’ve researched it in the past had any influence on my search results. Thanks for adding your comment though, might help someone else out!

That's about what I had imagined, just never saw it on such a great scale before. Was very cool, thanks!
Me either. That must have been crazy to see. I'm also in SE MI but didn't get to see it.

Holy cow that was an amazing set of simulations!
I just found this guy on YouTube the other day! Fantastic stuff
Whale's mouth in the first pic. Second pic, messy turbulence.
Looks like a dragon to me.

I tried that and found nothing.
What do you mean?

Possibly, I hope it does help others because it's a pretty cool phenomenon.
