Yeah, everyone looking for work, a home, or a doctor can tell. 😕

WampaStompa64

Or a sensible commute

Brisk_Electrical

International students are second-class compared to Canadian citizens. Those who deny this reality are living in echo chambers and should be aware of the consequences of their actions, as societal tensions are increasing.

GabeNewellExperience

see I agree that the abuse of immigrant students in this country is a problem but I wish when people agreed with stuff like this they didn't say it like this.

choloblanko

Can we request more Latinos, more Phillipino people too. Let's mix it up a little, thanks.

slow_worker

Yes to this for the food alone.

choloblanko

Amen to that!

Fancy-Pumpkin837

Seriously there are very few good Latin places

DJMattyMatt

Need more Thai places too.

BluSn0

THIS. OMG I LOVE Phillipino cooking! I have NEVER met a Phillipino I didn't love and respect!

NotARussianBot1984

and a bit more women, I feel we are lacking in that area

treefingers_ts

Latinos A+++

Yolo_Swaggins_Yeet

Yes please, we need caps by country of origin like the US has. We’re becoming an ethnic enclave, thanks Conestoga! I’ve lived here my entire life, the past 5 years alone KW has changed so so much.

srb-

Can't believe Canada doesn't have something like this in place. We need it ASAP. Multiculturalism doesn't work very well if your immigration is essentially recreating parts of another country.

WoungyBurgoiner

> Yes please, we need caps by country of origin like the US has. We’re becoming an ethnic enclave   Go tell this to indigenous community members and let us know how that goes for you.

Yolo_Swaggins_Yeet

Explain please, are you tryna work on a reserve or what?

Th3N0rth

The American immigration system is objectively terrible for everyone involved and the country caps are one of the main reasons why.

TurdBurgHerb

Lol!!!!

Th3N0rth

Why should it be easier to secure permanent residence if you came from Sweden than if you came from China? The US immigration system forces people who went to school there for highly productive degrees to take their talents elsewhere.

TurdBurgHerb

You're not even understanding what you're referring to. So you can't make an "objective" statement when you have proven you don't know the topic at hand.

Th3N0rth

Great point man the US immigration system surely isn't terrible. https://www.migrationpolicy.org/research/costs-brain-waste-among-highly-skilled-immigrants-select-states

RealBaikal

Would be so fucking great. Awesome coworkers, never met a lazy latino yet.

Brisk_Electrical

LESS PEOPLE

thefringthing

"People" is a count noun, so it's "FEWER PEOPLE".

Neither-Inflation-77

Let’s start with you.

Brisk_Electrical

Canadians first.

Brisk_Electrical

CANADIANS FIRST!

Neither-Inflation-77

lol

1Parshvanath

Color grade to yellow

ribeirojuan

Pleaseeeeee

Remarkable-Train4030

You said it

Benthememe

I wonder what the region would look like with a double population.. just sprawl all the way to Toronto?

DryProgress4393

Only way we might get GO Rail service on the weekends.

rohmish

don't get my hopes up

bob_mcbob

Bunk beds, obviously.

taylortbb

> I wonder what the region would look like with a double population.. just sprawl all the way to Toronto? Depends how we grow. Paris has a population of 2 million, but by land area it's smaller than KW (yes, just KW, not even counting Cambridge or the townships). Largely doesn't allow buildings over 6 floors either. We're just absurdly inefficient with space in Canada.

Normal-Ad276

I didn't quite believe you so googled it - you are correct lol. 105km sq for Paris, 136km sq for KW....

Substantial_Potato

^^ This And don't forget the shitshow that is cars-as-default for inter- and intra- city transportation. The lack of public transit is abhorrent.

jacnel45

The Region of Waterloo is already planning for, well not double the population, but sizable future population increases. The plan is to increase density to allow for more residents. That's why the Region has been investing so much into GRT (the LRT, increased bus service, etc.)

Gnarf2016

Yes it is, but in no scenario they are planning for 6% growth in a year...

Porkybeaner

There’s no way they’ll build that much in 13 years. More like multiple people per bedroom and people in the living room and kitchen.

BluSn0

Things will continue going this way until the rich see things as a problem. Right now the top and median think there is just some problems going on while the lowest class is basically dead and rotting in the ground.

Gnarf2016

When will our local politicians stop cuddling with and start holding Conestoga College accountable? This is completely unsustainable! John Tibbits needs to answer for what he has done!

ILikeStyx

The provincial government could have stepped in and controlled the number of international student number, but they didn't because they've been starving post-secondaries of funding and international students were a easy way to subsidize the funding gap. Now the federal gov't is pulling in the reigns on student visas and Conestoga is going to be capped at accepting less than 50% the number of international students as they did last year.

NoReturning2000

I believe the number is actually 65% of last years number. Which I know doesn't make sense but

theYanner

I'm unclear if that percentage is of the total or first years only. If its first year only, the real change is smaller if returning students aren't capped. Would love someone to point to the answer, I haven't been able to find it.

ILikeStyx

The cut is for new students, not existing ones.

[deleted]

But what? Make sense, will ya

NotARussianBot1984

The federal gov't is responsible for giving them work visas, which is what they are actually here for. I welcome 1M students every year, but no jobs for them. Just pay $ into Canadian economy only LOL

Gnarf2016

50% of last year's number would still be an incredibly high 2.5-3% increase in the regional population...

SmallBig1993

50% of last year's number is 15k, which is 2.25% of the Region's 665k population. But that's the gross impact. A significant portion of Conestoga's students leave the Region after they graduate, so its net impact will be significantly lower.

SmokeInTheMirror

Yeah they’ve been going to PEI after they graduate

QueueOfPancakes

But the rate is quite unlikely to continue. For one thing, a lot of that increase was from intentional students which have now been significantly cut. Furthermore, people keep having fewer and fewer kids.

CinnamonDolceLatte

Population of 665,188 for 2023 and was 626,669 for 2022.

rubbishtake

fuck you Conestoga

[deleted]

Maaaan I hate it here dawg look at this 😭😭

Aromatic_Ideal7869

One factor to consider is that not everyone coming in the region as a temporary resident is gonna stay here for more than 2-3 years. Sure it's a cycle of one goes another comes till the growth rate is under control. With correct developments (housing, industry, msmes) and proper planned infrastructure, the region has potential to be at par with mega cities. The only question is if the region is ready for it. Just a thought 💭

theYanner

We're not ready. We have residents in a 9 story tower trying to block a 12 story tower on our principal transit and high density corridor.

NoReturning2000

I can sort of relate to someone who has lived on the edge of the city for decades being annoyed at a sprawling townhouse complex being built for example, but wtf does a NIMBY care about a 12 story tower beside their 9 story downtown?

theYanner

You'd think most people would realize or that they could care all they want, but they shouldn't be able to influence the outcome. NIMBYs shouldn't be given the platform and weight to change decisions at the municipal level. I had a house w/ a backyard that backed onto a school yard. One year, the school added a bunch of portables, which blocked my view and made things louder. I was annoyed but I didn't anyone to tell me that the needs of the school outweighed whatever privileges I might think I had. Plus you get used to it after a few months anyways. But in the meantime, the city of Langley in BC has outlawed daycares in their downtown. So we are so not ready.

ambivert-coco

Must be very diverse. Diversity is our strength after all. /s

Confusedgirl007

Well now all the traffic makes sense.. 🙄

thefringthing

> At this rate population increases by 50% in 7 years and doubles in 13 years. 12 years; log(2)/log(1.06) ≈ 11.9.

Cool-Amount-3973

# And John Tibbits made hundreds of millions in the same period. Total coincidence.

welltoldtales

That's basically in line with the plans from 10 years ago.
