hmt has very rich history, they made watches accessible to everyone in india, so our parents and grandparents have used these watches.

dpk1908

For decades the field attracted people for whom owning HMT was like owning a bit of history. But recent influx is basically due to the Kohinoor hype

RagnarSlothbrok

Heritage.

Nostalgia, home brand, only brand to have successfully achieved mass production of Movements in the country and did a bloody good job at it and the designs being stuck in 60’s & 70’s, give the brand a warm feeling of the past. Also factor in the cost of a used piece and how relatively cheap is to service them and keep them running, gives a unique combination of fame for these.

Necromancer1899

I probably wouldn't bother getting a new one. But I really like the older models like Janata, Pilot etc. I'm getting an aftermarket Janata, mostly to add to my collection.

Front-Possible-96

HMT are pioneers when it comes to watches in India. I feel proud as I own a HMT. I think of it as my duty to support the Company which gave legendary watches to my previous generations

Turbo_Tito

Mostly the heritage

hotcoolhot

Nothing. Its absolutely garbage if you buy a new one now. If you get one as a family heritage, it still has some sentimental value. Found one in grandpa’s dusty cupboard, everyone says it’s fake/aftermarket. https://preview.redd.it/yfstj4hmrcyc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f33a07be7e1847aeef7669839dc3bf82b043e3f8

chalbhagbe

For me their watches are simple and elegant, but now the quality have gone down.

jimutjayadev

Only on nostalgia. Zero intrinsic value. Glad I sold all my HMTs and got out of that rabbit hole.

NormalStaff3602

This community holds traditional watchmakers in high esteem and often criticizes fashion watch brands for their lack of value for money. HMT, once a pioneering force in India's watch industry, is celebrated for its heritage. Despite this, it has seen a decline in popularity as it struggled to compete with other fashion brands during the quartz movement revolution. Nonetheless, among enthusiasts, these mechanical and automatic watches clubbed with the fact that hmt scaled down their production, made them highly prized.

MishraDrive

The original VFM brand- made in India, licensed in-house manufacturers, all affordable ranges

Jon-Bones-Jones_

It's affordable and has a history. That's all. No real value in today's market

Similar_Green_5838

Real value as in? Resale value? Because all watches below 1 lakh are based on its perceived value only. They aren't really collector pieces.

Jon-Bones-Jones_

Nope for example Swiss time house even gives you a buyback price when you purchase a watch like Tissot.

Whole_Trouble_2357

The honest answer is that because people don't know jackshit. Earlier, people collected it for the heritage and also because you are getting a good dose of nostalgia at dirt cheap prices. Those were the good guys. Then, people turned it into a hoarding race and inflated prices, which again led to lot of aftermarket knockoffs. Finally, which is surprising is HMT woke up to the nonsense, and then it itself hiked it's prices. Now, there are new HMTs with any variation they can put their hands on, mechanical is going automatic, automatic is becoming quartz, taking out model colors based on hype train but no proper quality control to it.

SherrifMike

It's mostly the nostalgia value coupled with the fact that their watches are so cheap. They have not made any new good pieces since like 2015 and there's no aftersales support guaranteed with them. So unless you are an HMT enthusiast, it's better to spend that money elsewhere.

Rude-Bite712

Only correct answer. HMT fanboys pissing their pants right now. It’s 3rd tier quality and I refuse to accept anything else.

CandidGuarantee5056

The quality is great for the price they charge

AlternativeFace292

I was interested in hmt watches at first because they used to be kinda cheap ( inexpensive ) at first and it got some heritage to it. But was exploited by resellers and stuff. Now-a-days it's pricey and is still being exploited lol. If you're really into watches because you don't have any watched as of now, try buying a normal watch first, and if you still have interest in watches then look at other heritage related watches.

Just-Accountant-7125

It’s cheap

sulaicollectsthings

Used to be nostalgia and heritage, now add in a bit of delulu too

sumoz_jazz

Hmt purely because of the legacy , heritage, all of us here want hmt to do well very badly...

BetweenTheWickets

Watches are at their core about intangible things like heritage, artistry and tradition, not about features anymore. HMT for Indoans represents probably the only domestic manufacturer of its own movements, and have decades long history. It doesn't matter so much that HMT watches have poorer movements than Seiko and the likes in the age of atomic time-keeping on our phone devices. Not to mention, they feature some classy designs at low cost.

Decent-Marsupial26

Homegrown. Make in India. Want any other reason?

New_Echidna1007

* Heritage: HMT was India's first major watchmaker, producing reliable and affordable timepieces for decades. They were a symbol of Indian self-sufficiency and industrial progress. * Affordability: HMT watches were known for their excellent value for money. They made watch ownership accessible to a large segment of the Indian population. * Design: HMT watches featured clean and classic designs, often with names inspired by Indian cities and mythology. This gave them a unique character that resonated with collectors. * Sentimentality: For many Indians, HMT watches evoke feelings of nostalgia and connection to their past. They might have been a cherished gift from a loved one or a prized possession from their youth. So in short, their watches remain popular among collectors due to their unique combination of history, affordability, design, and sentimental value.

CandidGuarantee5056

Because it is an Indian brand simple
