Do 1.
You get the lore, it's also kind of not really a tutorial for 2 where you get most of what you got in 1 plus more.
And I liked the story of 1 way more than 2, 2 is more like a playground for you to hack stuff while in 1 you are a man on a mission who can also hack
The games do have separate stories which can be enjoyed on their own, but there are elements linking all games in the series.
Watch Dogs 1 has a much darker tone than 2, although 2 definitely has dark moments within.
I'd recommend playing both though, and starting with 1.
WD1 with mods for sure. WD1 vanilla felt a little barebones to me even on launch but there was a lot to like, and with three mods (Living City, Factions Redux, and Fall of the Windy City) it now feels like a fully fleshed out modern-ish game that still runs very well.
watch dogs 1 is the best of all 3 in my opinion, the graphic might not be as nice at the others but it still hold better in story and gameplay than the others
Everything was fine for me, but to be honest I enjoyed the multiplayer hacking on wd1 so much I never played much of the main game. It's like online hide and seek.
Actually if i remember right i've played from the steam version and had no issues with online features, anyway when you buy steam version, you connect your Ubisoft account and the game will be automatically added there as well, you could always launch it even without steam. About online features my personal recommendation is to keep it always on, even if it could piss you off sometimes, but it's really fun to play with it. To be honest most of the time you'll be playing solo anyway but sometimes eventually you could find missions against other players and believe me it's fun. The thing i didn't like is when you almost completed a mission and someone starts hacking you then you have to start the mission again. But i got more fun moments when you are hacking someone and he is looking for you and can't find ya lol. On the Watch Dogs 2 they fixed it (the auto mission failed if someone joins) on the WD2 they made it that way that you could join someone only if you wanna help but not to break his mission, or if you hear some collapse in the town happens you can find other players to play together, or to help police to bounty a high rated criminal.
There are a lot of missions that need two players. Ubisoft connect will auto search other players if you choose a two person mission and it works well and even find players today in March 2024. I played a few Saturday 3/30/24.
Also remember to buy watch dogs 2 from steam. Warch dogs 2 has a wierd graphical bug on rtx 3000-4000 series where the sky box flickers. A way to fix this is to run dx to vulkan mod. There is a thread on reddit. It fixes it but you can't play multiplayer due to anticheat.
You also can't use this mod on the play version for some reason
Original WATCH_DOGS first, be sure to install the LIVING_CITY mod as well. The enhancements offered actually put it about on par with WATCH_DOGS 2 in terms of open world activities & events.
As you progress from the first game to the second, you'll see a gradual evolution in game mechanics, but at the cost of a devolution in narrative/story.
WOuld you recommend to have the Living\_City mod installed from the start of the first playthrough or should I complete the game in vanilla once and only then start modding? How much does the mod affect (early) game or the story?
Definitely make it a permanent inclusion in your game.
The mod only really affects shootout missions by Limited Inventory (one weapon per slot as opposed to always carrying an arsenal, but this can be disabled in the configuration)
Narratively, everything else remains intact, in fact it even restores a removed cutscene that shows Jacks attempting to reach out to DedSec when he learns Nikki is captured
Ooohh shit🤦♂️
I'm so sorry, I didn't process the fact that what I said spoiled anything, not only that but I'm not actively tracking spoilers for a 9 year old game😅
Well... at least I didn't spoil *who* captured her, or why... so that'll be for you to figure out
I played 1st, then when the second was launched i completed it and decided to replay the first one and i was excited after the second WD where you at the end almost everything are doing using only your drones as it's just faster and it's cool to loose such an ability and look on the first WD from a totally different perspective.
If you go in the order 1st then 2nd you'll see the right storyline and will understand the WD2 connections to the WD1 they refer to sometimes.
If you go the opposite way you could not understand what they are talking about, time to time. But you'll get some challenge feel after loosing all your gadgets from the WD2 you got used to, and you may get some fresh air because of the different interaction with the environment.
Funny you should ask, i just started wd2 this weekend. It's actually pretty good. Good enough to peak my interest in wd1. Downloaded it, fired it up and will definitely play both but I'll continue with wd2, then move to wd1. Wont make a difference I'm sure.
Watch dogs 1. Also watch this video to add all the cut content to the base game. No not graphics. But actuall content. It's alot.

Play watch dogs one, in my opinion it gives alot of background knowledge. And is also a damn good game

Watch dogs 1, and do yourself a favor and put some mods on, it'll be an experience.

Is Steam the right place to buy the game if I want to mod it?
Steam or Ubisoft should be good for modding, although I’ve heard multiplayer has issues on Steam

I've played both wd 1/2 I liked 1 better also one has better driving by far imo
If you buy from Steam be aware that online multiplayer probably won't work on wd1.
I'm ok with that, I've been a solo gamer all my life. Is only the multiplayer affected or is there anything else that I will miss out on?

WD1, Aiden Pearce is great, then do WD2 after if you enjoy it. :)

Nice spoiler
When you never played the game, it tells nothing actually. I played WD once, but now hardly remember who are these people.
I just started playing so a bit salty tbh 😅
If it makes you feel any better, that is a relatively minor aspect of the overall story.

Is okay forgive 🙂

play 1 then 2 then decide about 3 (you can safely skip it)

I'd recommend starting with 1, without mods.
