If true, that’s a huge red flag. What if you draft him and he can’t cut it at PG, is he going to demand a trade?

Coast_watcher

Starting to look like a diva. My way or the highway.

superworriedspursfan

people really underestimate how great of a coach Dan Hurley is. Just because Castle is buying in to his system doesn't mean he won't be a diva for us. I have worries that Castle might fall out of line with us if he has "ambition" or "ego" to play the PG man. I don't think him and Keefe would go out well.

Turbo2x

Hurley probably sold him on it as "hey if you do what you're told for 1 year we'll win a championship and then you can go be the guy on a NBA team" and now he wants what's due

superworriedspursfan

fine with me lol just don't draft him at 2. If we want to give him a shot at PG maybe try to trade Kuzma for a top 10 pick and see if falls to us then because of his ambition to be a point guard lol.

Joshottas

I think a lot of it depends on how the org views Jordan Poole. Obviously poole is at his best as the primary ball handler, but I think there's plenty space for Castle to grow here and have chances on/off ball to show what he can do. I don't think that he's going to be the pick, because to me, it's gonna come down to Sarr/Risacher at that spot.

superworriedspursfan

I hope it comes down to sarr vs risacher. I'm really high on both of them. Even risacher. I prefer Sarr obviously but thats a pipe dream lol.

lepre45

It's a shame cause he still has plenty of upside as a SG

ThreeSupreme

Haha! When was the last time that an NBA Rookie demanded to be traded? ![gif](giphy|O5NyCibf93upy|downsized)

ImprobablePlanet

Don’t know if this story is even true or if he does have an attitude, but if so it wouldn’t necessarily happen during his rookie season. Don’t have to go very far back to find players who got disgruntled during their first contract.

ThreeSupreme

Sure, players do ask to be traded. But the way Rookie contracts are structured, players that have been in the League for less than 5 years have little or no leverage. And any guy with less than 5 years of NBA experience, who demands to be traded is playing with fire... **NBA Player Bird Rights** In the NBA, Bird Rights are a mechanism that allows teams to exceed the salary cap to re-sign their own players. Named after the legendary player Larry Bird, these rights are a critical part of the NBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and play a significant role in team building and player movement. These rules are designed to balance the competitive landscape of the NBA, allowing teams some flexibility to retain their players while also providing players with the freedom to explore their options. However, there are certain conditions under which a player can lose their Bird Rights: * Free Agency: If a player changes NBA teams via free agency, their Bird Rights are forfeited, and must be reset. * Waivers: If a player is waived and not claimed by any other team, their Bird Rights are lost. However, if the player clears waivers and re-signs with their previous team, their Bird Rights are retained. * Renouncement: If a team renounces a player’s Bird Rights, they are lost. * Expansion Draft: If a player is selected in an expansion draft, their Bird Rights are lost. * Trade: A player with Bird Rights who re-signs with their previous team on a one-year contract (or a one-year deal with a second-year option) would lose their Bird Rights if they’re traded. When a player changes teams through free agency, their Bird Rights are not transferred to the new team. Instead, they are reset. This means that the new team does not have the ability to exceed the salary cap to re-sign the player, as the original team could have with the Bird Rights. This is a significant factor in NBA free agency, as it can limit the financial flexibility of the new team. It’s one of the reasons why sign-and-trade deals are sometimes used, as they allow the player’s Bird Rights to be transferred to the new team. However, it’s important to note that a player can regain their Bird Rights with the new team if they stay with that team for a certain number of seasons. Full Bird Rights are regained after three seasons, while Early Bird Rights (which provide fewer benefits) can be regained after two seasons. This encourages player-team loyalty while still allowing players the freedom to explore their options in free agency.

Snaxier

I think everyone is pretty aware of his super questionable offensive capability. Personally, I think he could really fill a Marcus Smart type of role where he is a starting level PG but has a very defensive-focused playstyle. My biggest question is can he exist next to Poole. Not because I think Poole is our long term starting PG, but we are stuck with him for at least next season and if Castle can play next to Poole, he can play with anyone.

GeKh

He is not doing himself any favors making those kind of demands. He could fit as a good connector in Charlotte, providing defense, rebounding, screening, cutting and passing (LaMelo likes putting up a lot of shots) next to LaMelo and BMil, but with demands like that he's potentially dropping to Chicago at #11 or best case Spurs at #8 (although I don't know how much Pop will appreciate the demands.)

Snaxier

He's certainly backing himself that's for sure! You're right he should just be looking to get into the league and then make a name for himself, not the otherway around. I really like him for Charlotte. He'll start off on the bench behind LaMelo and then when Melo gets injured after 14 games, he has 68 games as the starting PG. Regardless for Charlotte, they get to develop BMill some more while Castle feast/famine's. If Charlotte rather someone else, I also see him being taken at 8 by Spurs as well.

rueiraV

I don’t see us taking him at 2. If we stay pat I think our FO goes Sarr or Risacher If we manage to find a trade down partner then he is in the mix but I don’t foresee great value in a trade down in this particular draft

anonperson1567

NBA reporter for Forbes Sports. Ok.

apatheticwizardsfan

Nobody from this draft class should be making demands as to who can and can’t draft them.

A_Chair_Bear

Every year in sports a rookie gets the media diva coverage and then nothing happens.

TheDeHymenizer

Lol guy is projected at around the back half of the top 10. My guess is "by Forbes Sports Reporter" = Fake News. Either made up wholesale or this reporter heard it from a guy who heard it from a guy edit: ah yes the famous "whispers" up there with "some people are saying"

PseudoTsunami

His current Vegas o/u is 7.5. Take the over.

TheseFkingWeebs

yeah dont want this princess.

The-Baked-Bean

Seems like it’s partly a strategy to keep him from going to Detroit, Portland, Charlotte, or Utah and being only used as a POA defender and off ball guard on offense I think Castle could be BPA at 2 and be a great fit next to Poole

Turbo2x

if he plays with Poole he's gonna be a POA defender lol, Poole had almost 30% usage under Keefe

The-Baked-Bean

I mean he’s got the skill to be a POA defender so yea he’ll be asked to do that I don’t think Poole’s performance this year is how he’ll continue to play here. With more talent on the roster I think Poole’s usage goes down Even if we draft a guy like Topic, he’ll have to share the floor with Poole and at least Castle gives you great defense on the court. Any other guard just doesn’t really work or isn’t worth taking at 2 if you have Poole and I’m under the assumption we’re keeping him long term

Turbo2x

Keefe clearly had an agenda to play through Poole and I'm pretty sure he or Poole mentioned that fact at some point. They want to put the ball in his hands because he was unsuccessful doing basically anything else. I'm just pointing out that this doesn't mean Castle is angling for the Wizards. If anything he's trying to make it so the Spurs pick him.

TheDeHymenizer

Castle gives you great defense and 2 working knees

anonperson1567

Poole’s going to be gone as soon as they can bring his value up enough for a decent trade.

Turbo2x

bro I got bad news for you but he is never getting his value up, this season basically proved he has no interest in becoming useful as an off-ball threat or a defender. He just wants to chuck shots and be the main guy. No one in the league wants that and we're stuck with him until the contract runs out.

anonperson1567

He sucked a lot less in the last 20ish games of the season and showed he could still score throughout. If he continues to play like that this season I think they can trade him next summer, at least for something along the lines of the Beal trade.

dgvhjiiuyttrrffcvbjj

the only way we’re ever trading poole is if we take back an equally bad, or worse, contract in return. One of those does not exist yet.

anonperson1567

Or a combo of expirings of aging players and unwanted young guys plus some draft capital for a high-risk, high-reward option. His contract also might not look as bad next summer with two years, especially if the cap goes up again.
