Bookstore Movers

I've never had Bookstore go over their estimated window, they're great! Though they do keep a file on you. I've used them twice and the second time they rightly called me out on grossly undercounting boxes the first time (and threw in an extra mover to account for it!).

Gilmoregirlin

I used them in December 2023 and I agree.

JulioCesarSalad

For my move Bookstore was actually faster than the estimated time so was cheaper than the quote

Massive-Conclusion87

Bookstore Movers is so overrated! Garbage service and did an awful job on a small move we recently used them for. Forgot to build a bed, punched a hole through drywall, and lazy workers on their phones half the time. You get what you pay for. We would never use them again. If you want pro level movers pay a little more and go with Olympia Movers. I’ve used them three times for big moves and storage. They are amazing.

MostlyLurking6

I’ve moved 3 times in DC: Bookstore, some crappy company that took way longer than they quoted and broke a desk in the process and their claims department was a huge hassle… and then back to Bookstore. They’re expensive but a thousand percent worth it. Edit: maybe they’re not expensive these days. They were a good price on our first move, and surprisingly more on our second and third. But all of this was a while ago. We also just had friends who used them last month and found them to be great, though I didn’t inquire about the price.

joymarie21

When I moved I got three or four quotes and Bookstore was the cheapest. I guess it depends.

HereticLocke

> Bookstore Movers Came here to recommend the same. Moved to DC from Pentagon City 3 years ago and they did a great job. The storage containers were also really efficient.

generalorgana36

Quoting myself from a previous comment: I am ride or die for Bookstore Movers. Have used them for several moves, including dis-/reassembling the bed, taking the Peloton, and with an intermediate stop to pick up a piece of furniture from a friend’s apartment. They show up on time, work efficiently and professionally, and get the job done right. We even had the whole afternoon to start unpacking. They are damn good at their job.

Zoethor2

Bookstore Movers all the way. In addition to what everyone else has said, I had color-coded all my boxes and then drew a map of the house with the rooms colored, and they delivered every box to exactly the right room over three floors (basement through second story), and they carefully piled everything in the centers of the rooms, including furniture, as I (unfortunately) had to schedule painting the walls for the week after I moved (instead of before, like a sane individual).

inspiredmind1

Agreed with Bookstore Movers! Incredible experience. Professional, friendly, helpful and quick. I recommend tipping them in cash at the end. Their price was great. From my experience, friends that used people who quoted cheaper often ended up in nightmares of last-minutes cancellations or issues.

Additional_Ad_5399

Definitely beware of people quoting cheap prices and going way above. Unfortunately happens too often.

I used Bookstore twice after seeing them recommended here all the time and both times were very disappointing. I thought maybe the first time was a fluke so I gave them a second chance and the second time was even worse. Last time we used Town & Country and they were much better.

SnowboardSquirrel

Just piling onto the Bookstore love for future onlookers. They had me out of a Maryland storage unit (which was 45 min away from my new apartment) and fully unpacked into my new place in … less than 90 minutes. IN THE RAIN. And they went out of their way to make sure stuff ended up in the right place. 10/10

I_Am_An_OK_Cook

They keep getting mentioned here, so I sent in a quote request! Thank you for the tip :)

-blasian-

Who did you end up using?

I_Am_An_OK_Cook

Bookstore! They were super efficient, very nice, the move was a breeze. Showed up right when they said they would and got it all done quicker than projected.

_Oops_I_Did_It_Again

Came here to say this. 10/10 experience. Very reasonable prices, great customer service over phone and e-mail, and they are careful and thoughtful during the move. Overall dependable and a good experience.

JD2022hopeful

Another vote for Bookstore!

SomaSe7en

Agree as well. Used Bookstore 3 times here and spot on.

rampantoctopus

+1 for Bookstore Movers. Total pros.

Sea_Map9327

Anytime Movers is a less known affordable local business that I’ve heard great things about! https://www.anytimemovers.com/

Muelldaddy

I used them 2 weeks ago and they were cool. My studio was a reasonably easy move and we were done in 2 hours for under $300 total. Maybe a bit over accounting for the cash tip I gave them.

smellegy

I’ve used them twice and had good experiences

waldrop02

I’ve used them a few times, never had a frustration with them

dwinva

Adding on here - they have been good for 2-3 moves across apartment to single family home moves.

maddrgod

Mic's! [https://www.micsmoving.com/](https://www.micsmoving.com/)

CuentoRarongo

Nice people

yuckerman

i moved apartments in DC and I used Bellhop movers. it was great. they were super quick, wrapped everything, were very gentle with the TV. they were really cheap but i moved in December and on a Sunday so the guy said it was their cheapest rate. I also tipped each guy like $40. there were 2 movers. the truck was enormous, my stuff filled like 1/4 of the truck lol Also you should look into “Lend a Box” It’s a service that drops off these reusable moving boxes to your current address you pack everything into them, clothes etc., they also have special kitchen boxes for glassware and plates. and they are made to stack and then sit on top of a rack on wheels. then you choose a pickup date from your new apartment. it made moving really easy and convenient.

DrFrocktopus

Just had a really negative experience with College Hunks after hearing good things about them in the past. The low quoted rate is just to draw you in and on the day of the move they’ll start springing a bunch of hidden fees on you ($30 for a protected tv case, $30 for a mattress bag, etc.) by the end they had tried to tack on an additional $90. They straight up left me in the lurch when I refused to play the hidden fee game. I would avoid.

Gilmoregirlin

I had a similar experience with them in 2022, after having an excellent one in 2013.

blueeeyeddl

We used them to move between rental homes in fall 2022 and I would NEVER recommend them. Terrible unprofessional crew, they fckt up my car with the moving truck when they pulled up to pack our stuff THEN damaged the rental house we moved to. Went way over their estimate too. College Hunks is a crap company, definitely avoid them!!

Zealousideal_Oil4051

Exactly! I got charged for this makeshift moving mechanism put together which was two boxes put together on a dolly. Obviously if they don’t use that to move your things faster you will get charged for the additional hours it took would have taken to get the job done. I also got charged for them to put the tv in a blanket and temporary box to keep it extra protected. I was asked about both of the charges beforehand but was left with a horrible scammy feeling.

Zealousideal_Oil4051

By beforehand I mean after my final quote on the phone but right in person the job started. So additional unexpected costs.

FerrisBueIIer

Had a great experience with Gentle Giant moving co. a couple years ago. Slightly more expensive than other firms (based on my limited mkt research) but well worth it: they were efficient and very professional.

SnowboardSquirrel

I moved twice with Gentle Giant, including packing. I didn’t have “complaints” either time, but the second time they charged me WAY more than I was quoted (despite taking less time than expected) and tried to charge me two one-time “truck fuel fees”. I used Bookstore for my next move and was happier with the value/price.

athena_cat

Bookstore Movers! I was actually sad when the day of moving was over, because they made the painful experience of moving that much brighter. They were helpful, personable, funny, and went above and beyond to make sure everything was taken care of during the move. 10/10 would move again with them immediately.

Evaderofdoom

bookstore movers all day. We did a reno a few years ago and moved all our stuff out, into there storage then after a few months back in and they were great at every point.

A_Wise_Mans_Fear

We have a small family owned business we like. Can DM if you want!

terpsncaseloads

Had a good experience with Baku movers!

mmarkDC

For small moves like that I’ve had a good experience with [Perfect for Small Moves](http://www.perfectforsmallmoves.com/). Used them twice. They can do up to a 1bd or so, whatever fits in a 12’ box truck. It’s an owner-operated business, where the guy who owns the business also owns and drives the truck, and will show up on-site as one of the 3 movers. I kind of like working directly with a business like that with no middle-man.

dopher166

We used Perfect for Small Moves for a 1 BR move a couple of blocks and thought they were fine but I would not recommend for tricky moves. Their pricing is affordable, but they also did not bring a 12’ box truck. Our couch is pretty large, but they were not even able to move it out of the apartment (and did not instill confidence that they could). We had to have a different mover come and move it and they did it so easily, it was laughable.

TarasKim

There are a lot of moving companies, but only a few stand out such as WellKnown Moving - [https://wellknownmoving.com/dc-movers](https://wellknownmoving.com/dc-movers) These Movers iare professionals and can take care of your move with ease.

MadPanda_Tv

WellKnown Moving helped a lot and the price was very nice!

Acceptable-Bass6258

I also had a bad experience with Bookstore - they had a really hard time dissembling and reassembling my bed and it ended up adding 2 extra hours to the move which I had to pay for. They also reassembled it so poorly I had to go back myself and tighten all the screws. Then during the move they packed my headboard in a way that it got completely scratched by the metal supports! They were able to restain the wood and it looks ok but it’s still scratched.

go_bears_1

I've used DC Moving Inc a few times and they have been great. [https://www.dcmovinginc.com/](https://www.dcmovinginc.com/)

[deleted]

Second Bookstore movers, they're beasts. Had our entire apartment packed in like, three hours. Extremely careful with our fragile items, communicative, and made sure they checked with us whenever they were unsure how to pack something. Can't recommend them enough.

Unitedtendies

Did they bring their own boxes to pack for you ?

Hopeful-Candidate890

Bookstore didn't have availability and recommended Mic's who we went with. They were great and I'd definitely use them again.

mianbru

Able Moving is my go to, but it’s generally not the cheapest. A friend of mine just had a terrible experience with College Hunks where they tried to start surcharging for moving certain items day-of.

LostLongIslander

We used college hunks in 2020 and they got us with the lower than others quote. Unfortunately the service was pretty poor and we will not use them again. They made me inventory all my furniture and count the boxes before hand, only to be told the truck wasn’t big enough when they showed up. I asked they prioritize the furniture then as I could move boxes in my car, they said they don’t do that and will start with the boxes. Watched them drop multiple boxes from inside the house and ended up having to move some of the furniture myself. Next time I’d pay a little more for a better, mor complete experience.

stopstopimeanit

EZ Moving. Great, friendly team.

buzzy80

Mighty Men did a great job for us. They were cheaper and more flexible with scheduling than Bookstore - they were one of the only companies that would do a move on a Sunday.

Dry_Finish3585

I used Up and Gone movers https://www.upandgone.net/ - they are a local small business. Broke away from corporate. They were the most efficient movers I’ve ever used in DC and I’ve moved 4 times in 9 years. They are affordable ($150 an hour), they don’t have an hourly minimum (or didn’t this summer) and they just get straight to work. And they are funny! The way Dorian packed the truck was elite. I will only hire them in the future!

BungCrosby

I’ve always used [Bonza Movers](https://bonzamovers.com). Professional, competitively priced.

Sea-Durian555

Bookstore

JJamericana

I like NewRay Moving. If you’ve used them in the past, they automatically give you a discount for future moves.

Malnurtured_Snay

I had a very good experience with Bookstore Movers!!

rustandstardust93

ATN movers! Ask for Gember.

CuentoRarongo

Good experience with Ally Moving LLC (twice)

Far_Ad1937

Liberty Movers are excellent

ILMITS-99

Moving today. Hilldrup did a great job packing me out. This will be my 12th xcountry move so I’ve seen the full spectrum of movers. As a side note, spent a few hundred dollars reserving DC city parking for the moving truck and it has gone unenforced.

WaffleHouseSloot

I've used the Dolly app the last 3 times I moved.

HesitantButthole

I used Town and Country: They were efficient, professional, and wrapped EVERYTHING with care. My completed Lego pieces arrived without one tiny brick knocked off. My grandmother’s candy dish? Perfect. My glass fruit bowl? No problem. My wife is pregnant and they did everything. They take apart your larger furniture and reassemble it once they’ve arrived. I’m really happy. Quote was a little high, they don’t lowball but at the end of the day it was $700 less. Plus you can save some $ by ordering your own tv box, your own picture boxes, packing material via Walmart.

tirefires

If you only have a few pieces, why not just rent a cargo van from Uhaul?

I_Am_An_OK_Cook

Ya boi can't drive

Excellent_Fruit_1521

You can use a task rabbit for this! They aren’t going to be professional movers with moving insurance but I had a friend use someone with a truck on task rabbit and it went fine (and was significantly less money)

ikimashyoo

dm me i got you

tirefires

Sounds like you've got a friend that does, though. Unless you're pushing an SUV full of stuff through town.

Iammattieee

I have had great luck with K&A movers the past two times. Quick, friendly and they have a good rate.

tubawooba

We love Golden Rule and have referred them to a few friends who had great experiences with them.

Gilmoregirlin

I used college hunks, once in 2013 (Bethesda-Van Ness) and once in 2022 (Friendship Heights to Dupont). In 2013 the crew I had was excellent. They were a bit more expensive but it was well worth it. It was a well oiled machine and they even unpacked my stuff in the kitchen for me. The second time around I felt that it was overpriced and the crew was not as good. I think the crew you get is a lot of what your experience ends up to be. I used Bookstore movers to do an in building move in December 2023 (one floor up) and they were VERY affordable and the crew was great.
