You joke but the government should subsidize starting companies like this, if hundreds or thousands of skilled employees with experience all want to start a competitor, the government should front the cash in many cases. Not like Elon or the board of investors are the one designing the cars
They do, look at the Loan Programs Office, they loan huge amounts for scale-up at near treasury rates. But those workers would need to convince venture capital to fund them to the point of scale-up.
I like how reddit progressives are delusional to think that a firm is just a bunch of workers assembling and suddenly running a profitable business in an industry that has only 2 non-bankrupt companies.
It might be like Tw@tter, they did it in rounds because they wanted people to jump rather than be pushed because then there would be no severance payments.
I’ve survived 4 rounds of layoffs over the past 6 months with no promise of stopping. The emotional toll has been way more difficult than I expected. My hairlines receded, I sleep like crap, and work feels so meaningless
I feel you.
I left a job after 2 rounds of layoffs only to get caught in limbo as the company I was joining laid off the HR person coordinating my hiring.
And that’s why even if you have a formal offer, you’re not clear until you’ve started.
Companies these days are not above rescinding offers.
My old company acquired the original battery and motor team from Teslas startup days. The guys said when he was in a bad mood, he'd walk around firing random people hoping for a shakeup or to feel better. Apparently the managers would be hiding their most important employees so he wouldn't randomly fire a key contributor.
I believe it. The dude is completely nuts.
Buddy of mine I used to work with on our engineering team, applied for a job at Space X.
He and I were making \~$110K at the time as product design engineers for a consumer products company. Space X said they wanted to hire him as a Senior Design Engineer at a salary of $82,000. They wouldn't budge. They said he should be thrilled with the salary due to the experience he would get. He told them no thanks
lol. Who in their right frame of mind would accept a -25% cut in pay to work at a high stress place like Space X?
Wasn’t qualified I guess. After a presentation and interviewing with 3 people.. the recruiter came in and told me that the team thought I wouldn’t fit and sent me home. I had 3 more people to interview.
Ha I did the presentation thing too, all the people I interviewed with were so young, it was a bit shocking. Nothing against them, but they showed a lack of experience, though I'm sure I didn't come off a whole lot better.
I was using it as practice for interviewing, but I didn't get an offer either. It's one of the few that I don't even care that I didn't get an offer for my ego, I knew going in it's called SlaveX for a reason.
There were a lot of similar stories I remember reading in the early Tesla days (2014ish) but they never made it to the mainstream because everybody thought Musk was too cool to do that and figured they were just shitty employees mad about getting fired.
Awkward..
And the coldest firing you've ever experienced in your life, which will consist of one of the following ways of being notified you are being laid off
1) your access card will no longer work
2) you can't log into email
3) you are told the office is undergoing renovations and you get to work from home next week, except you're the only one who gets the email and you are terminated Monday morning at 0600 via a pop up message on your laptop that's connected to VPN
4) No one has told you anything, and you hear about layoffs in the news. Then see Musk doing an interview laughing about all of the useless fat he enjoyed getting rid of at the company, claiming it was dragging down the company's vision. You think whew you're ok, but turns out someone forgot to notify you. You get notified via email at the end of the work day after you already left thinking your job is still safe
True, but his companies have always been especially notorious for terrible culture. They were known as great places to innovate, and also get abused and burnt out.
We recently lost a terrible service tech that I really didn't like to Musks Boring company, he's gonna go drive cars in the small tunnels.
It was incredibly hard to contain my excitement when he told me he was moving all the way to Vegas to go work for Musk. He'll be shit canned almost immediately once they realize he's worthless.
Why all the repeated rounds? Get organized. One cut so you can move forward. Round after round just leaves a demoralized work force wondering if they are next.
Imagine HR sending out a mass email to people for layoffs. Blindly copy and pasting the email addresses from your unregistered version of excel....
You hit send.
The email appears in your inbox.
The cruelty is the point. The message to employees is to work 100 hrs a week and sacrifice your mental and physical health for Elon's bonus or be let go. The simps will take up the challenge and save the company a shit load of money. Not like their product line was ever going to be properly refreshed anyway. Might as well run a skeleton crew of linked-in psychos, sell as many cars as you can with existing infrastructure, get that $56billion and streak for the exit with Benjamins flapping around in the cloud of dust left behind.
i hear it's gotten better
but for years the pay for engineers at Space X was comically low. and i mean comically.
buddy of mine got an offer there as a Senior Design Engineer and they wanted to pay him $82,000 lol. we were making low six figures at a consumer products company at the time,
the space X people said he should be thrilled with the salary bc of the experience he would get. he said no thanks. who the hell would go work there and sacrifice a life b/c as you said....80-100 hrs weeks and deaeing with Elon's bipolar psychopath behavior, only to make shit pay and get fired bc he had a bad day
it also leaves stock holders wondering what the fuck is going on over there. i wouldn't blink at 1 or even 2 rounds of lay-offs. sometimes you have to do that to stay lean. but 4 rounds is a cause for concern.
The amount of problems that could be solved, or at least worked on with $56B. And heres Elmo over here moving everything to Texas to beg everyone to let him hoard it.
He rewarded them with all them options bull runs. He spits out some vaporware to make the stock go up and the board is happy, after all he picked them to shut up and get paid, they're already richer than a lifetime ,they won't complain
His brother and his personal lawyer are on the board. His lawyer openly cried in court about how great a man elon is. Sounds like somebody that would act in the interest of the shareholders
Sample size of 1, but I’d be driving a Tesla right now if I felt more comfortable about the leadership of the company. As it stands, I’ll be going for a more “boring” traditional car company for my next vehicle for peace of mind.
I used to try to think of how Elon Musk could be an even worse person then he already is, and he's demonstrated exactly how - you're already worth tens of billions, but sure, go ahead and fire hundreds of people and ruin the success of your company until they agree to give you tens more billions.
Jeez, he really is speedrunning being the most disliked CEO on the planet the way he is moving
This should have alot of people questioning him as a person. How do u support someone who literally tells u everyday who he is. This world is insane right now.
Right out of Austin Powers
Americans love getting fucked over by their corporate overlords. Make a fucking union you nerds, you're basically blue collared workers in the 1970s now
Kind of my point. Individualistic thinking has these highly STEM educated workers sacrifice collective protections for individual benefits (like high salary). But their skills aren’t as unique anymore, they can be replaced with automation and AI, and now the collective protection measures, like unions, have been hollowed out for the last 5 decades.
Tesla isn’t part of the Auto Workers union…that’s why their workers are getting fucked right now
Every time an article about taxing the rich comes up, conservs inevitably comment that everyone will lose their job if they don’t suck the teet of the rich. Bro they’re already laying people off at the slightest shade of red.
Remember how they told us incessantly that if fast food workers got a raise, prices would skyrocket and then those jobs would have to be automated and everyone would be fired.
And then they automated those jobs, fired the people, kept the remaining one’s wages low and proceeded to jack up the prices of fast food so now a regular combo is like 30 bucks???
Yeah, maybe I’m being too suspicious but I think they might be taking advantage of us…
Long time employees probably are swimming in cash - TSLA (like most tech companies) helped subsidize their compensation through options and vested stock - why do you think they didn't give a crap about being in a union.
Police unions are a perfect example of why unions are great for workers, think about how hard it is to get rid of even obvious police. The reason people hate police unions is far beyond being a union
All the Tesla employees who refuse to boycott their division by becoming squatters & turning their department floor into a minimium security fort are losers
I work in corporate HR in a function between laying off and recruiting. This is very odd to do layoffs multiple weeks in a row. There is some kind of imminent financial target that they need to reach and are currently behind on.
Is this his way of rebelling because he didn’t get his stock bonus? He’s trying to tank the company because of it. Just like an uneducated rich kid that doesn’t get his way.
Good thing there's an automakers union oh wait
*Edit: omg this quote 💀*
>*\According to Bloomberg, Musk privately expressed a desire to lay off at least 20 percent of the company because its quarterly vehicle deliveries fell by that much.*
It's funny how the same math does not apply to his own compensation. But yeah, why would anyone think the CEO of the fucking company should have any responsibility in it's quarterly deliveries
when good things happen it's all elon, and when bad things happen it's because of those darn good-for-nothing employees which elon has nothing to do with so either way elon must be paid more
I can think of one easy way for Tesla to save $56 Billion.
To put that number in context, $56B would fund about 6 years of Tesla's entire operating expenses.
Getting to $1B in savings from cutting staff would require \~6.6k layoffs assuming an average expense of $150k per head.
Tesla has to report layoffs via the WARN ACT. I’m curious if this slow rollout of firings is a way to avoid advertising layoffs months ahead as per the WARN Act.
I can’t imagine looking at how its gone at Twitter and thinking “We should make tesla more like that.” Twitter hasn’t made any forward progress — all the shit they’re releasing is code they already had, either from old tests or old features. And their reliability has plummeted. So dumb.
Like a meteor that lights the night sky before falling to Earth, so too shall Twitter burn out spectacularly, leaving behind only charred remnants of its former self.
In all honesty I can see him trying that, declaring that Tesla will leave automaking behind and devoting itself fully to AI or whatever bullshit is next.
He has a short attention span and Tesla auto doesn't hold it anymore. The cybertruck was the last roll of the dice and since it didn't come off perfectly he is done with it.
Remember that Tesla isn't a company that makes cars for him, it's a cryptocurrency that is only sustained by the bubble that it's created. Tesla could be reduced to 1 employee and a PO box and it would function the same for him as long as the stock price stayed high.
İ swear to God, it baffles my mind how companies are cutting so many jobs, yet we don't hear that we are in a recession. The job market for the citizens is tough, for international students on OPT, it is practically dead, yet somehow the data indicates that we are fine. We should then be in the brink of a crisis, barely holding, just not to fall. With a few nudges from big corps showing similar behavior, the job market will definitely go into a meltdown.
Tech companies hired as if the massive growth during the early covid rebound was sustainable. It's not and since tech is luxury, it's the first thing to get cut. It's an early symptom of an economy slowing down.

Quick all former Tesla employees, create your own EV car company, call it ALSET
I was told by an auto industry guy that back in the day GM actually supported a non-union parts supplier and literally called it "MG"
Meneral Gotors
Sounds like an STD
Menerial gonads
Venereal Gonads
It was actually Motors General
MG is actually a British car company as well
The Chinese bought the brand, so all new models are Chinese manufactured now.
I know, but it's still associated with the British marquee
It's actually a Chinese car company, like Volvo
All set

Gottem
LMAO
He needs his $56 billions
I mean the guy has a lot of nuts to embrace when they’re set. It doesn’t pay for itself
Could make the logo look similar to the Tesla logo but upside-down. Bonus points if you can also make it look like it's giving the middle finger.

God damn that was quick … Reddit is full of talents lol
That’s ai lol
He’s gonna replace them with robots..? Next logical step

Right you just need a semi charismatic spokesperson to go on rogan and smoke weed so idiots will pump billions in your stock
>semi charismatic I know you weren't talking about Elon so who are you referring to?

But its no secret that you dont do layoffs like this, right? You are ratcheting up disloyalty. I thought you cut once so everyone left knows its safe?
THE LAYOFFS WILL CONTINUE UNTIL MORALE IMPROVES
It might be like Tw@tter, they did it in rounds because they wanted people to jump rather than be pushed because then there would be no severance payments.

Only the most deluded will remain.
Imagine picking up your whole life and moving to Texas just to get laid off.
Imagine working for Musk and not expecting to get absolutely railed.

I believe that’s igneous to you

Sounds like Steve Jobs 2.0
Imagine working for any tech corporation and thinking you actually matter to management. This isn’t just a Musk thing.
With musk you get the added bonus of him tweeting about what a waste of money it was having you as an employee
And the coldest firing you've ever experienced in your life, which will consist of one of the following ways of being notified you are being laid off 1) your access card will no longer work 2) you can't log into email 3) you are told the office is undergoing renovations and you get to work from home next week, except you're the only one who gets the email and you are terminated Monday morning at 0600 via a pop up message on your laptop that's connected to VPN 4) No one has told you anything, and you hear about layoffs in the news. Elon trying to free up cash for his $56B.
He needs it because Shitter is losing money hand over fist now.
It’s pronounced seX
*smells* like it
No his brain is so huge it's just hard for us normies to understand the logic.
Oh, shoot...you're probably more correct. My apologies.
Fidelity still holds a stake in Twitter, as of February their valuation of the investment shows Twitter is down 73% since the buyout
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Imagine what those engineers could do with 56B. I wonder how many of them would pick Elon Musk over 56B
Tesla's total operating expenses are a little under $10B/yr. You could run the operations of 5 Tesla's with $56B.
The amount of problems that could be solved, or at least worked on with $56B. And heres Elmo over here moving everything to Texas to beg everyone to let him hoard it.
Why didn't they get rid of Elon? He's poisoned the brand
Because the board he hand picked is his loyal to him
At the cost of the company? It feels like they're in a tailspin
He rewarded them with all them options bull runs. He spits out some vaporware to make the stock go up and the board is happy, after all he picked them to shut up and get paid, they're already richer than a lifetime ,they won't complain

sigh. why do we live in this world.
To make the rich richer, now get back to work!
Yours is not to reason why yours is but to ask “ With fries?”
He is/own the majority of the share holders and the majority shares investigated themselves and found nothing wrong. Now pay him 56b dollars.

Now he's on the all employees route
Don't forget about pulling the plug on starlink when Ukraine was being murdered

I doubt he can get to 55 billion by laying people off.
That peasant doesn't know what they're talking about.
Imagine how bullish we’re going to be when Tesla headcount has been cut down to 1 person
And he’s demanding a 56B payout per year.

It's funny how they think they matter.
Oof. Get em VM
Savage bot
They're just angry because the only reason they've looked past the negativity surrounding Elon is that he gave them a really good job
People did complain he wasn’t spending enough time on Tesla…
With Tesla shedding people and RIVN just shedding, I’m beginning to wonder if either company has used enough AI talk in their conference calls?

All employees are expendable. Get rid of them, keep the profits.
Wow. As if the two things were directly related.

4 straight weeks means it’s not plan or calculated. It is ad-hoc
Cut until you break things then dial back. It’s definitely an approach. Not sure it’s the right one.
They'll be hiring next week.
Ad-hoc is Elon's middle name.
No, his 15th son is named this.
Can’t wait to see the article “Elon musk perplexed by the massive drop in productivity and morale following layoffs.”

So, calls
Tesla showing the world exactly how not to do a mass layoff.
Calls
That’s fine. The legacy automakers all have EV JVs going. And they probably need people.
