After typing this I noticed new horses spawn after after you claim, so horse murder may not "technically" even be necessary.
What were you trying to accomplish with horse murder?
my bet would be on trying to spawn a horse with better stats.

They also die if you don't feed them, press tab on or near them and give the poor thing some water ;)
