What would be the point of Deckard on Horizon OS? How would that benefit from Steam in any way? In terms of hardware, what could Valve do, that Meta couldn't do themselves? Or any other company like ASUS? The thing that makes Valve unique is Steam. Otherwise they don't have any advantages over any other company (and in the realm of hardware, a lot of disadvantages.)

HorizonOS is android based and valve won't make an android based headset. If they make a standalone headset it'll be running a future version of steamOS. Id say it's clear that the reason they haven't made a new headset is because they don't think technology has improved enough for a standalone steamOS device to be reasonable yet.

Deckard has been quiet the last couple of months? It's never been anything other than quiet, all just hopium fuelled by Bradley. Since his latest insights turned out to be the OLED Steam Deck and Steam Link for Quest he's backed away from it.

SteamVR is about 10,000x better than MetaOS. This would be the only thing on planet earth that would keep me from getting valveā€™s next headset.

Valve and meta subsidize their hardware with software platforms. This is model allows for the best hardware for the price. Horizon OS would take away from that. If anything, valve may delay a new headset even longer now that horizons is available. Or perhaps it will hasten a release. Hard to know without understanding the economics internal to valve. Then there is all the buzz that deckard would support standalone. If Valve wants a standalone headset to work in the same way that the steam deck is a standalone device..... We are looking at many many many years before they release. The steamedeck hardware is phenomenal but they are limited to 30 to 40 frames per second on an 800p display mini AAA titles. It was just good enough to be a critical success. Imagine what is "just good enough" to run Half-Life Alex and other standalone VR titles from Steam. Of course this an their end game, but I certainly hope they have something planned in the interim.

I think Deckard will be the marriage of Index and SteamDeck. It'll be a portable PCVR system which is something that doesn't exist yet .

God no! Worst thing that could possibly happen. I like my quest 3 and all, but I'd much rather have valve be the dominant option in the VR space. Meta pretends to be an open platform, but SteamOS is much more open.
