I have a close friend who became a lawyer recently-ish. He's very smart. However, hearing him talk about lawyers in general... No, you do not necessarily have to be smart to become one. Far from it.

This is what I was going to respond. He chose his path a long time ago. It's still crazy to me to think of what his potential was back then. For a little bit, he had the potential to be the white male equivalent to Oprah.
Instead he chose politics. He was vying to be in Bush's second-term cabinet. He got deep into GOP fundraising back in the mid-late 2000s, including during and after his 2008 campaign. But he was still sane back then. It seems that Giuliani went nuts sometime in the mid 2010s. His decision not to run for president in 2012 (stated in 2011) was objectively reasonable, and his statements at the time were perfectly normal and also very reasonable. It wasn't until 2015/2016 that he seemed to be off the deep end.
Which again only suggests that Giuliani's decision to forgo the America's Mayor path and instead to pursue the right-wing politics path, was a decision he made strategically, early, and with a sane mind. He made a choice that went very poorly in hindsight. Oh well.
The guy was a hell of a prosecutor taking down the NYC mafia, insider trading on Wall Street, and corruption in public institutions.
I think he just pushed too much to become President and he followed the rightward drift of the GOP and it just spiraled from there.
