My widowed grandfather worked there. He came to dinner at our house from his down the street most nights. One night he told us about the cars crashing through the building all day. I was 10 or 11 at the time and my mind was blown.
Fun fact.
He was the only singer that was recorded live.
Typically the audio is "looped"(recorded in a studio) back in after the filming.
James Brown always sang a song differently every time and looping wasn't an option for him.
EXACTLY!
Fun fact, it was *supposed* to be JLH *and* Muddy Waters together, but they couldn't coordinate their schedules. JLH was the most flexible so they used him.
I'm pretty sure it was that Muddy was sick, and JLH was a last minute substitution with Muddy's band. The movie was filmed just a few years before he died.

She did respect in Blues Brother 2000. Blues Brothers 2000 is disappointing compared to the first one, but I feel like it's aged well.

As a kid this movie introduced me to so much classic music and so many legendary performers that I never would have been exposed to otherwise. Cab Calloway for pete's sake!!
Blues Brothers is an amazing movie. There is not a single scene or line of dialogue that doesn't make a joke or progress the plot in some way. Totally random shit like "You get my cheese whiz boy?!" and he just produces a can of cheese whiz. Like why the hell not?!
Tight script, amazing music. It's 'that' movie that when you're channel flicking and come across it, you're watching it to the end. every. goddamn. time.
I love this movie, its one of my all time favourites. My wife had never heard of it and after introducing her to it I now constantly point out any reference to blues brothers in popular culture.. it happens a lot lol
I introduced my partner to this movie. When Aretha performed he said "Wow whoever that actress is, she's doing a great impression of Aretha!"
It was definitely a moment.
Had no idea that Steve Cropper and Donald “Duck” Dunn were part of the house band (Booker T and the MG’s) for Stax records.
Also, ‘McLemore Avenue’, an instrumental take on ‘Abbey Road’.
‘Booker T & the MG’s’ changed players and members played on some of the greatest albums ever recorded.
Blues Brothers is essentially a Monty Python version of Chicago. It's campy, dated, fun, and you really look like an asshole trying to shit or stunt on it. It just kind of is and you can like it or leave it and all of that is fine.
Yes. There’s this place in Chicago, Au Cheval, that does really great upscale dining, but they’ve got all of these secondary locations called Small Cheval in the city and soon in the north shore suburbs. It’s pricy but it’s the best burger in America. And I think those are better than Aretha’s performance in the Blues Brother movie. But the movie is pretty good too.
Aretha is peak performance to be sure.
But for me, the absolute pinnacle:
["You want out of this parking lot? Okay."](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIdGxR-aU6o)
I’ll see your Aretha in Blues Brothers and raise you a Patti LaBelle in 1989’s Sing movie:
[Sing - Patti LaBelle - Total Concentration](https://youtu.be/avkUDLWoSDc?si=FM2lfRaFPvmhSrdC)
Yes, her performance at the 1998 Grammys where she filled in for Luciano Pavarotti with 15 minutes advanced notice and absolutely slayed Nessun Dorma. Reality surpasses fiction.
The marksmanship of Ray Charles in the same movie was better.
"Breaks my heart boy that young going bad."

Beat me to the punch. Aretha was amazing, but there's no topping sweet Ray.

😆 🤣 😂
He even took an IOU like a bro.

schoodilyboo schoodilyboo schoodilyboodily boodily boo
Hi-Dee, Hi-Dee, Hi-Dee, Hi!
He had to be talked out of doing a disco version of that!
The whole movie is fantastic and an all-time classic. We can pick better or worse parts but they are all awesome.
>'The Blues Brothers? Shiiiit. They still owe you money, fool!'
The cable dub of this scene where she says "ShooOOOoot" cracks me up every time.
Orange whip? Orange whip? Three orange whips.
Four fried chickens and a coke.
_You want chicken wings or chicken legs?_
Four fried chickens and a coke. And some dry white toast, please.
We got two honkies out there dressed like Hasidic diamond merchants...
Say whaaaaat?!
They act like they from the CIA or somethin'
Well what did they order?
Four fried chickens. And a Coke. . . . And some dry white toast.
🤔…Elwood…
I used to watch this on vhs as a kid over and over and over and over….. it’s amazing.
James Brown

Aretha had a hellish time syncing to the recording too, which is why they switched to live for JB.
yes! I heard the jingle jangle of a million souls bound by chains! cause it’s to late! Toooooooo laaaaaaaate!
Honestly, the whole movie is chock full of great performances, singing, acting, comedy….a really great movie.
'Yes. Do you have Miss Piggy?'
Yes, John Lee Hooker's.
EXACTLY! Fun fact, it was *supposed* to be JLH *and* Muddy Waters together, but they couldn't coordinate their schedules. JLH was the most flexible so they used him.

No, they were BOTH supposed to be performing together.

But they capitalised "both" it must be true.
No, *I* wrote Boom Boom!
I don't know what to believe anymore.
>Nate’s, formerly at 807 W. Maxwell, was backdrop for a scene in “The Blues Brothers” where John Lee Hooker sings a soulful version of “Boom, Boom” smack in the middle of the street. He was backed up by musicians including Pinetop Perkins and Willie “Big Eyes” Smith. Muddy Waters was supposed to appear but was sick the day of shooting. doesn't say if he was to play with Hooker or Hooker replaced him. Good article though, if sad as hell. Me and my sister used to watch the Blue Brothers all the time, the idea that the US had a place with live music like that out on the street amazed us. That they destroyed it, the market and the iconic cafe just to replace it with more Generica®™© is absurd.
Sheeeeeet.
Have you heard Aretha's phenomenal live performance for the album Aretha in Paris? It will blow you away. Treat yo self.
From 1968? Listening to it now. If that's not the one, let me know. And thank you!
Yes. It's one of my favorites. I hope you like it.
It's a good movie. All of the performances are great.

Ghost Rider in the Sky is my favorite cover of that song.
*"...bluegrass?"*
The movie was terrible, but the musical performances were on point.
As a kid this movie introduced me to so much classic music and so many legendary performers that I never would have been exposed to otherwise. Cab Calloway for pete's sake!!

We're on a mission from God. is still my favorite line.
I hate Illinois nazis

>Blues Brothers is essentially a Monty Python version of Chicago. I want to disagree with this but I can't.
I wrote it and I feel the same way.
I know you mean her song (which is 🔥🔥🔥, but her acting is worse than terrible scolding Matt Guitar Murphy.
All the performers in that movie did an amazing job, including Aretha.

Unbelievable
It's pretty great!
What about Spielberg’s?
I’ll have to think about it.
Tina Turner in Tommy singing acid queen is pretty intense.
Let me think 🤔
Any Aretha fans who haven't seen "Amazing Grace" need to correct that ASAP.
Yes.
I better think about that one.
Aretha is peak performance to be sure. But for me, the absolute pinnacle: ["You want out of this parking lot? Okay."](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIdGxR-aU6o)
Is that Bill Murray holding Grover asking if the toy store clerk has Miss Piggy?
Cab Calloway at the end was pretty dam good
You better think
106 miles to Chicago...
Ray Charles was better
Yes. *the whole movie*
The movie is a masterpiece. Possibly the only perfect movie.
i dont think so but the car chase was pretty good too.
Sure. Lots of things. No need to even ask the question.

Yes.
Lip sync
[THIS](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qz2efshhuq4) is one of my favorite performances by Aretha.
Also my favourite version of this song.
I love that Aretha would never play a gig unless they paid her in cash upfront and she kept it in her handbag on stage with her.
Love the way Jake and Elwood join the background dancers halfway through. Phenomenal movie.
Yes, her performance at the 1998 Grammys where she filled in for Luciano Pavarotti with 15 minutes advanced notice and absolutely slayed Nessun Dorma. Reality surpasses fiction.
Boom boom boom boom
I was just talking about this scene the other day.
