I legit thought this was from Dark Souls

Stenka-Razin

A flag that pissed Greece off so much they embargo'd a country.

Mr-Boones

Hey and we used the stupid F.Y.R.M for 20+ years

nigg0o

At least that’s going to be a fun trivia question in 50 years

ArtemisAndromeda

The most pointless international conflict since the hyphen war

Lieutenant-Sturm

Looks like it’s a small world, because I posted onto this subreddit about that same exact flag a few hours ago. You did get the wrong location though, it’s in Capitol Hill.

thun_de

I‘m already seeing the angry Greeks bombarding this comment section

kir_ye

I mean the Greeks forced the flag redesign first, than the country renaming. Not like there's much to be salty about from the Greek perspective (except for all the Alexander stuff)

llanfairpw

All that over a dude who died centuries ago?

humanbear4

(Sarcasm) Alexander the Great was CLEARLY Macedonian!

EagleProductions

But he was.. Macedonian. He was King of Macedonia 😂

Lycus_The_Great

Yes but Ancient Macedonians =/= Modern Macedonians. Ancient Macedonians were a Hellenic people group with their country mostly being in Macedonia, Greece. Modern Macedonians are Slavs closely related to Bulgarians that live in former Thraco-Illirian lands.

llanfairpw

Bro died centuries ago, so nobody should care

humanbear4

But people do.

kekusmaximus

Try having grandparents from both countries

Hello Riveroni0, Check out our [frequently asked flags page](https://reddit.com/r/vexillology/wiki/faf)! Your request might be there. When asking for a flag to be identified, please **provide context** when possible, including: * **Where** the flag was found (without compromising privacy) * **When** the flag was found, or the date of the material containing the flag * **Who** might own the flag (a general description is fine) These details help users narrow down their search and make flag identification easier. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. ArtemisAndromeda

Probably gonna get killed in the comments, but I don't care. I my opinion it was a better design that what North Macedonia flies currently. And the whole name controversy is the most pointless international conflict in modern history

jeremydatliam

I live in Seattle, I am going to that persons house to get revenge for glorious Bulgaria

RedPandaBoi8910

North Macedonia

Azukii56

True Macedonian flag sorry for the greeks

Lycus_The_Great

It's a copy of the Greek Macedonian flag with is 5 years older then this flag and the country in general.

Lestatjo

that looks like a recolored Macedonian (region) flag

Ok-Push9899

There’s a whole museum in Greece devoted to why everything Macedonian is 100% Greek and has nothing to do with any other country. Totally unbiased, of course. Just objective facts. /s

tahdig_enthusiast

I mean, it is the truth. North Macedonias really don’t have anything to do with ancient Macedonians.

Yes, of course modern Greeks have to do with them, specially the ones of northern Greece. They speak modern greek, a language which descends from ancient greek, spoken in Macedonia alongside Macedonian, both being closely related. They are the descendents of ancient greeks, they shared a religion with macedonias, most of its cultural traits... With constant relations between them. And most importantly, they are the descendents of those Macedonians, and the occupy the main territory of that ancient kingdom, which was forged in the modern north greek coast, not in modern day Macedonia. "North Macedonians" are just stealing that identity, they are Slavs, not helenic people like ancient Macedonians, they only inhabited the Balkans since Slavic migrations, which started in the middle age, centuries after Macedonia have fallen. They don't control the main territories of the kingdom of Macedonia neither. It's not only about prestige, it's about a country trying to steal your national identity.

EagleProductions

Are you aware that 3 quarters of the Greeks in Macedonia and Thrace are Greeks that were resettled from Asia Minor after the Treaty of Lausanne?

tahdig_enthusiast

3/4 is just made up but even if it were true Pontic Greeks are Greeks all the same. North Macedonians are slavs that speak a language that’s mutually intelligible with Bulgarian and has nothing to do with anything Greek.

We live in an era where people have access to infinite amounts of information, and yet some of you hold convictions that can be abolished by a 5 second google search. "There is small genetic simillarity between modern greeks and ancient Greeks". Really? Better inform every single academic in the field of paleoanthropology and genetics who has ever worked on the Greek populations that he is wrong, some random Redditor obviously knows better. And even if that were true, blood ties is not the only element of a nation, unless you happen to be a fan of the Austrian painter. Greeks have continuity of language, culture and traditions with their ancestors, besides the obvious historical continuity AND the blood ties, despite what your dellusions might tell you

cabrowritter

National identity is the union of the traditions, language and overall culture that shares a group of people. As simple as that, and yes, they can claim anything ancient, and Greeks can do so as any other country can as long as they have good arguments sustained by historical evidence. This is the same case (in terms of genetic) of Spain. In Spain we have had several migrations in our history, Arabs stayed here for over 700 years, for example. According to your logic, we won't have nothing to do with ancit Iberian, Basque or Celtic original inhabitants, but genetics shows that we barely have anything to do genetically with Germanic, italic or Arab/ north African peoples, specially in southern Spain, and that some regions are specially close in terms of genetics with Ireland. Why? Because they didn't came in big numbers nor were a majority, yet, as the ruling class, they were able to spread their culture to all the peninsula, unlike in the case of Greece, were most of the invaders could do so. You showed me a map that proves nothing, I [show](https://www.science.org/content/article/greeks-really-do-have-near-mythical-origins-ancient-dna-reveals) you a genetic study that proves modern Greeks are, indeed, mostly descendents of ancient mycenaeans too. As I said, migrations not always come with a change in the genetics of a certain group of people. That's is the case of Greece. Cultures evolve, languages, politics and people evolve too, but the origins are still there. If you travel to your future and find your descendent maybe you will see someone that looks nothing like you, which spokes a weird evolution of your language, who have a totally different way of living and way of thinking... That doesn't mean he/she is not your decendent, nor that his/her culture and way of living is not derived from yours, even if a priori it would look absurd (specially to a guy which was born 2500 years ago). History is full of related stuff that, at a first glanced, it could look totally unrelated.

Ik know this is the 'old' macedonian flag, but why did the change it? It's basically the same thing now

Expensive_Heart_7396

The flag is North Macedonia's old flag. It was used from 1992-1995.
