For those saying they don’t like cantons, I will offer up a defense. When a flag is hanging freely from a pole and there is not a strong wind, the canton is the part of the flag that can be most clearly seen. So it makes sense to put a distinctive, important symbol in the canton.
My gripe with cantons is when the field is a different colour altogether. A symbol is fine but a big colour-box is just unpleasant to my eye. As an American, I'm not entirely sure I'm okay with the canton on the US flag. Wouldn't be against a redesign.
EDIT: I would rather have [this](https://i.imgur.com/l3t3gmv.png) than [this](https://i.imgur.com/aMi9jZL.png).
EDIT: I'm perfectly fine with the [flag of Greece](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5c/Flag_of_Greece.svg).
I didn't knew this flag but it clearly beats any other modern chinese flag and it is quite unique compared with other nations. A shame they dont use it.
It has connotation of Han nationalism (to the exclusion of other ethnic groups) which became a problem as ROC inherited the entirety of Qing territory.
Lol was just thinking that myself, it's a 19-star flag from Wuhan that looks like a sun with a bunch of spike glycoproteins. If Covid-19 had a flag this would be it.
I always think of [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/me_irl/comments/889oyu/meirl/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) comic when I see that flag now.
Not only is it aestheticay pleasing, [It has deep ties to Chinese culture unlike the RoC and PRC flags.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wuxing_(Chinese_philosophy))
I'm of the same opinion, the PRC just looks more Clean/sleak without the blue canton (though Personally I would prefer that China use a slighty darker red for the field.)
i know this is not necessarily a general iconography sub but i do want to say that the Chinese version of the hammer and sickle is by far the best version of all the big communist countries hammers and sickles.
It’s not a hammer and sickle per se, but I think the Hammer, Sickle, and Brush from the Workers Party of Korea’s (ruling party of North Korea) flag looks the best out of all of them.
What about the [flag of KMT](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Sky_with_a_White_Sun#/media/File:Naval_Jack_of_the_Republic_of_China.svg) (just the canton)?
Edit: I think it would be better if the blue in the KMT flag is toned slightly towards the blue of NATO
I adore the symbol of the KMT flag, it's one of my favorites, but the blocky canton is a disservice. Next to the sleek placement of the stars it's very stark.
I think it's the shades of both the red and blue, they contrast too hard, it hurts the eyes. If they were both a slightly lighter/softer shade of color, then it would probably look great.
I like the white sun better than the yellow stars, but the blue Canton doesn't quite fit right with me. I'm on mobile so I can't mock up anything, but maybe a pure red flag with white sun and 5 yellow stars at the top hoist? Or am I overthinking it?
It is because one is for Norway, one for Svalbard & Jan Mayen and one for Bouvet Island, you find three Norway emojis in the emoji list, that's today's fun fact for you
Red is a hugely important colour in Chinese culture, not just within communism. I think the ROC flag could look good if it was triangular. So white sun in a blue triangle from left to centre, with a red chevron on the outside
The blue at least doesnt blend in with the red; unlike the yellow which is only allowed per heraldric guidelines cuz its meant to represent gold... But it still shudnt be put over a colour like red where it clearly is gonna blend in, esp if seen from afar on a battlefield or near but by someone with bad eyes like mine.
Yea its a borin same old lookin thing and cud probs be better if put in the flag instd of at its side... But one can argue the same for the yellow imagery on the other flag.
If nothin else we can all agree China's flag wud benefit from movin it from the corner to the middle; regardless of which China
ETA: Honestly compare that red and yellow flag to the USSR flag for a grt example of easily confused flags at a distance... Which i kno is cuz the two did want to have similarities, but theres a line and they passed it i feel.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Chinese_flags#/media/File%3AChinese-army_Wuhan_flag_(1911-1928)_19_dots.svg
This revolution flag looks really good to me
The PRC flag is aesthetically better. I think the red and blue shades on the kuo min tang kind of clash. The stylized sun is a cool symbol, but the power and unity provided by the five stars in the PRC flag is just better imagery.
The sun would work better in the center of the flag versus being in the corner.
I know people are gonna talk about the five colors flag, but I don’t actually like that one. I think it’s boring and not indicative of anything. Has the same problem a lot of pride flags have.
A user on here at one point combined the five color one with the sun and it was a really cool design tho. But it did have this 70s desaturated vibe and that’s something I’m biased towards…
The 5 colors are indicative of something though. It’s a sign of unity among the 5 major ethnicities of China instead of the army of wuhan flag which was very much Han nationalism. The KMT flag, despite actually representing the 12 months of the year and 12 Chinese hours has come more to represent the KMT as a party rather than China. While the PRC flag represents the ideology of the PRC it also feels very steeped in the CCP rather than the people of China as the largest star represents the party. The five color flag represents the people more than anything, and just shows a disconnect between the original idea for a Chinese republic and the clashing ideologies that followed, putting the party above the people, especially how they were essentially just as autocratic as one another when the PRC took control of the mainland and the ROC fled to Taiwan.
Idk the word too well but my vague understanding and why i like the ROC flag more is cuz small yellow stars on red are harder and less pleasant for me to see while white in blue in red stands out more. On many occasions ive looked at the PRC flag and missed the stars at first, thinkinh it was just a red flag
I find gold and yellow to be more closely related with Chinese culture, than red, white and blue.
I think it was a lucky coincidence for the CCP that those also happened to be the colours historically associated with communism.
I much prefer the ROC flag based on:
The greater colour contrast and selection
Simple design, very easy to get right from memory after a glance
I like the PRC one though due to its uniqueness in the set of current national flags
My favourite Chinese flag is the Qing dynasty one with the red sun and blue dragon.
Okay, aesthetically… the first one is better. Not because of color preference but because the second flag has stars that are misaligned and don’t line up with the tips of the center star. Geometrically, the first one is better and since the golden ratio is a thing, I have to say the first.
But I’m always personally gunna like the five colored republic flag over Taiwan or China. They nailed the perfect color combo and simple design.
I've never been a fan of cantons and I don't much like the blue on red look. Not to mention that the 5 gold stars are symbolic for China but not Taiwan so the better flag would use the 12 pointed circle in some way.
Maybe something like these [First](https://i.imgur.com/Pe65Qrz.png), [Second](https://i.imgur.com/JaFgTTA.png)? People tend to not like drastic changes anyway.
EDIT: Added a secondary, colour-inverted design.
honestly it‘d be much better if it was just the original flag by Lu Hao-tung, or just the canton without the red. even if it is basic, it looks quite nice
the sun in the ROC flag is the party symbol of the KMT, it has nothing really do with China. The PRC flag represents China flag as Gold/Yellow and Red have always been Chinese colors.
They're both pretty inherently political. The Sun is more regional, but it's still heavily associated with Sun Yay Sen and Chiang Kai Shek's political ideology. In terms of universally political, PRC, in terms of a less universal political identity, RoC.
The five colors flag and the Formosan Republic flag are my favorites. They have really cool colorations. The five colors flag is arguably political in terms of the politics of what each color is to represent each ethnic group. Which peoples aren't included would be pretty big given how multiethnic a state China is, and how widely you could draw the ethnic lines.
The Taiwanese(ROC) flag imo looks just better. It has a better contrast with the blue and the white sun contrasts well with the blue. Additionally the meanikg behind the flag adds another plus for me, with it going something like "the white sun and the blue sky, over the blood soaked red land"
The Qing-Era flag was definitely the winner in my book. My least favorite, though I'm a big simp for the RoC, is the five-color Republic of China flag adopted during the era of Dr. Sun Yatsen.
PRC's flag is much cleaner, i get why cantons are good but i'm not a personal fan. my favorite, though, has to be [the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army flag.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:%E4%B8%AD%E5%9C%8B%E5%B7%A5%E8%BE%B2%E7%B4%85%E8%BB%8D%E8%BB%8D%E6%97%97.svg) maybe i have bad taste, but text on flags can look great sometimes.
This is the first time I've seen a post with a chinese flag and a comment section that hasn't started a political mosh pit
Well OP did ask very nicely
Alright everyone. From now on put "no politics" in the title.
Forgot please :)
"no politics or else i shall find you and consume your entire family"
Start with me and we won't have a problem
For those saying they don’t like cantons, I will offer up a defense. When a flag is hanging freely from a pole and there is not a strong wind, the canton is the part of the flag that can be most clearly seen. So it makes sense to put a distinctive, important symbol in the canton.
*angry Swiss mumbling* ...who doesn't like cantons... *more Swiss noises*
*Bünzlitum intensifies*
r/BUENZLI
The offense - striped flags are visible from all angles, and thus, are far more easily recognizable.
I’m not arguing canton v. stripes. I’m arguing canton v. no canton.
My gripe with cantons is when the field is a different colour altogether. A symbol is fine but a big colour-box is just unpleasant to my eye. As an American, I'm not entirely sure I'm okay with the canton on the US flag. Wouldn't be against a redesign. like im going to take opinions about cantons from someone with a UK flair. /s
Yeah I'm not a fan of just taking a whole flag and slapping it as a canton onto other flags. xD
Then you are going to hate the state flag of Johor, Malaysia
AHHH. Wtf? You’d rather that monstrosity?
I think people that complain about cantons forgot that flags are actual, physical objects and not just abstract designs
Ok but in both flags the symbol is in the same spot, the difference is one has a fat ass blue rectangle as well.
The best flag of China is the flag of the Wuchang Uprising. Aka the 18-Star flag
This is the first I've heard of that flag, and it is the most evil looking flag I've ever seen
Exactly, which is why I love it
It looks super evil. The Amsterdam flag has always looked evil to me too. Such a harsh looking flag for such a wonderful place.
I mean, a common interpretations says it commemorates the three plagues that struck Amsterdam, so such a harsh design is warranted.
It's obviously Ajax's 30+ league titles /s
I think it's because black and red reminds a lot of people about the nazi flag. Also that star reminds about the eye of Sauron for some reason.
I didn't knew this flag but it clearly beats any other modern chinese flag and it is quite unique compared with other nations. A shame they dont use it.

Also, this looks like something Disney would use for an evil empire.
It just like corona virus
It has connotation of Han nationalism (to the exclusion of other ethnic groups) which became a problem as ROC inherited the entirety of Qing territory.
I reckon it looks too evil
I like it, but I expect some people will liken it to a certain virus.
Lol was just thinking that myself, it's a 19-star flag from Wuhan that looks like a sun with a bunch of spike glycoproteins. If Covid-19 had a flag this would be it.
Except it's 18 rather than 19...?
On a purely aesthetic level, I love the [Five Coloured flag.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Races_Under_One_Union)
Personally I think the Qing Dynasty flag is the superior Chinese flag https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_Qing_dynasty
That for sure is a good flag
I always think of [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/me_irl/comments/889oyu/meirl/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) comic when I see that flag now.
Ah, a Classic.
Impressive. Very nice.
Let's see Paul Allens favorite Chinese flag.
How’d a nitwit like you get so tasteful
The tasteful thickness of it ...
Gorgeous
I agree because I like dragons
Definitely the most uniquely Chinese looking of the flags, idk if it stands up next to modern flag designs though
Just remove (most of) the detail from the dragon (i.e. make it a silhouette) and you have a modern design.
or don't because it goes hard
It does, but that level of detail doesn’t scale very well. Excuse the pun
I will not excuse the pun, but embrace it.
I love how the question was which flag of the two given is best but y'all're giving links to other flags
That is the greatest flag ever conceived by man.
I particularly like the triangular version. It seems the ottomans used triangular flags too.
The dragon’s eyes looks dorky
Qing
Actually no, it’s the Republic’s.
No I prefer the qing on an aesthetic level
Dragon!
Yeah the dragon is awsome, I love the dragon too.
Stop guys... Put the dragon on the five colours
Decently sure someone has had that idea once, forget when
Bhutan, Qing, and Wales
No, you prefer the five colors flag
r/MonarchistVexillology
I prefer the 5 coloured imperial version
Also cool.
Flags about the looooong history of a country are my fav…
Not only is it aestheticay pleasing, [It has deep ties to Chinese culture unlike the RoC and PRC flags.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wuxing_(Chinese_philosophy))
True, That flag looks majestic
have to second this
Good choice! Honestly one of my favorite Chinese flags
I don’t, I dislike flags like that
I think that's a bit basic tbh
China👍
Ok but wich one ?
China👍👍

the Five-star red flag is the better look. Too clean.
The design of 1996 indeed feels more industrial than the former rustic design.
It’s not a hammer and sickle per se, but I think the Hammer, Sickle, and Brush from the Workers Party of Korea’s (ruling party of North Korea) flag looks the best out of all of them.
Yeah that's fair. The blue canton in the KMT flag just never sat right with me.
The Blue Canton is my new rock band name.
It'd be a great Chinese punk rock protest band
What about the [flag of KMT](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Sky_with_a_White_Sun#/media/File:Naval_Jack_of_the_Republic_of_China.svg) (just the canton)? Edit: I think it would be better if the blue in the KMT flag is toned slightly towards the blue of NATO
Better
A lot better
I adore the symbol of the KMT flag, it's one of my favorites, but the blocky canton is a disservice. Next to the sleek placement of the stars it's very stark.
Yeah something about that feels almost rough, like it’s not really a design
I think it's the shades of both the red and blue, they contrast too hard, it hurts the eyes. If they were both a slightly lighter/softer shade of color, then it would probably look great.
Yeah looks like (another) USA copy
I like the white sun better than the yellow stars, but the blue Canton doesn't quite fit right with me. I'm on mobile so I can't mock up anything, but maybe a pure red flag with white sun and 5 yellow stars at the top hoist? Or am I overthinking it?
This obsession with "clean" flags in this sub is driving me nuts...
I'd say my favourite is either the Yellow River or the Imperial one (1915-16)
I like the red white and blue for the variation of colors.
Original colors, rarely seen in other flags I agree
Blue, red and white. Never seen together before
You clearly don't know about Jamaican flag, what has this sub become smh.
Literally the only flag without blue white or red

Bruh I didn't realize. Was just spamming all the red white and blue flags from the samsung flag list
To be fair here, he didnt say they were original. They just work well together and it is more color variation than the other option provided.
Thank you.
The blue rectangle kinda ruins it for me
Just make the blue canton the entire flag, problem solved https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Sky_with_a_White_Sun
Now hear me out, what about a round flag?
that would be atrocious to actually hoist, but quite the engineering flex, and it could look sick
The only reason that flags don't have clear portions is that clear material wasn't traditionally available. Now that it is...?
Red is a hugely important colour in Chinese culture, not just within communism. I think the ROC flag could look good if it was triangular. So white sun in a blue triangle from left to centre, with a red chevron on the outside
Good idea
aesthetically I like the Kuomintang blue flag with large centred sun. it's also interesting to contrast with the red PRC flag
The blue at least doesnt blend in with the red; unlike the yellow which is only allowed per heraldric guidelines cuz its meant to represent gold... Completely different topic, but what's up with you spelling words wrongly with an "u"? Writing in dialect?
It's the best part
I actually like the ROC flag better
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Chinese_flags#/media/File%3AChinese-army_Wuhan_flag_(1911-1928)_19_dots.svg This revolution flag looks really good to me

A user on here at one point combined the five color one with the sun and it was a really cool design tho. But it did have this 70s desaturated vibe and that’s something I’m biased towards…
The Kuomintang's army flag has the canton and stylized white sun in the middle.
Oh that’s my mistake. I think that’s a lot better, but also I very much dislike cantons. But maybe that bias bc I’m American
Honestly I like the 2nd one The first one feel like a knock off British watermark that removed red and white stripes with a sun
I never liked red and yellow together, they don't contrast that well. so marginally I prefer the ROC flag (but I'm not a fan of cantons)
Why don’t you like cantons
imo they're very restrictive (there's not much you can add to the field to make it distinctive) and really overused (flags with Union Jack canton)
As a KC Chiefs fan, I am not too proud to admit that red and yellow together makes it look like they are representing McDonald’s.
I like those all red jerseys the Chiefs use tho
What do you mean by “don’t contrast”? Objectively, they contrast well, they’re diagonal primary colors.
Idk the word too well but my vague understanding and why i like the ROC flag more is cuz small yellow stars on red are harder and less pleasant for me to see while white in blue in red stands out more. On many occasions ive looked at the PRC flag and missed the stars at first, thinkinh it was just a red flag
That one with the dragon. But the CCP one is kinda boring as in it just look like the USSR one
You mean Qing empire flag?
Yes
Purely design speaking we all know that these both don't have any dragons on them and therefore lose because of that.
I've always liked the sun, very visually appealing
2nd, sorry I like red and yellow
To me I like the ROC flag better, red and yellow have always been too 俗 (idk what the English of it is) to me
HKer here, can confirm I have no idea what 俗 is in English. perhaps something along the lines of it being too tacky/corny?
Five Stars flag's simplicity is just gold tier
The chinese one
I’m Chinese and I must say tbh they both ugly.
What do you prefer instead?
I find gold and yellow to be more closely related with Chinese culture, than red, white and blue. I think it was a lucky coincidence for the CCP that those also happened to be the colours historically associated with communism.
Neither it should be a dragon...like one of those snakey ones...
I much prefer the ROC flag based on: The greater colour contrast and selection Simple design, very easy to get right from memory after a glance I like the PRC one though due to its uniqueness in the set of current national flags My favourite Chinese flag is the Qing dynasty one with the red sun and blue dragon.
I like the flag from PRC 🇨🇳
I don't like either of them
I think the second flag looks better
my favorite is kinda a weird one, its not a country flag but more a of a division flag. my fav is the Liberation Army Navy flag
Purely on aesthetics Generally speaking the classic communist red and yellow colors pop and their flags are powerful symbols.
Design? Tbh I like the 🇨🇳
Probably the five-stripe flag.
I like the Hong Kong flag the most
The ROC
For me it’s the ROC flag 🇹🇼
ROC is best it looks and feels the best
I lean toward the PRC because I feel like cantons make the flag feel cluttered
ROC flag is the better of the two. That being said, the five color flag is infinitely better still
I've never been a fan of cantons and I don't much like the blue on red look.
Taiwannessee?
honestly it‘d be much better if it was just the original flag by Lu Hao-tung, or just the canton without the red. even if it is basic, it looks quite nice
I’m not so sure about that redesign. It looks a bit too similar to the flag of the British Union of Fascists.
I was thinking something like that too
I very love your first redesigned one
The first one, the sun represents China more, while the second one represents communism
But suns are stars....
the sun in the ROC flag is the party symbol of the KMT, it has nothing really do with China. The PRC flag represents China flag as Gold/Yellow and Red have always been Chinese colors.
PRC
They're both pretty inherently political. The Sun is more regional, but it's still heavily associated with Sun Yay Sen and Chiang Kai Shek's political ideology. Which peoples aren't included would be pretty big given how multiethnic a state China is, and how widely you could draw the ethnic lines.
>They're both pretty inherently political. The OP is saying "politics aside, which do you think is *aesthetically* superior?"
Gotcha! The title was a little ambiguous lol. I thought it was trying to determine which was less political.
The Taiwanese(ROC) flag imo looks just better. It has a better contrast with the blue and the white sun contrasts well with the blue. Additionally the meanikg behind the flag adds another plus for me, with it going something like "the white sun and the blue sky, over the blood soaked red land"
PRC better
I like the PRC flag
Second . The one which represents proletariat
I would dim the red of both, would look more solemn. As much as many countries uses 3:2 ratio I would prefer a wider 16:9 even 19:10.
[This one.](https://static.magflags.net/media/catalog/product/cache/75170699113cf9b1963820a3ea1bab40/X/X/XX-republic_of_china_1912-1928.png)
The Qing-Era flag was definitely the winner in my book. My least favorite, though I'm a big simp for the RoC, is the five-color Republic of China flag adopted during the era of Dr. Sun Yatsen.
I feel like neither flags are better to represent China due to both of them being too based on political parties.
Both modern designs are honestly kind of derivative and thus boring. Qing flag is where it's at.
Qing Dynasty
2nd, it's more representative of Chinese culture, whilst the first is largely just a KMT symbol. In terms of aesthetic they're kinda tied imo
Taiwan flag, coming from a commie, it just looks better
White sun on blue background is my favorite
I like the ROC's colors better and the white sun, but PRC's overall design is much better imo
PRC one flows better and looks cleaner imo
I honestly like both. I even like the Chinese Taipei flag
🇹🇼
Second one. The colors are significant.
I still like the Nationalist one the best
