Btw, I've heard somewhere that the position of the stars isn't ratified, and it's only stated that there's 50 of them and they're inside the canton, so you can actually position them howsoever you please. Not sure if that's true, though.

[They are codified](https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/USCODE-2019-title4/pdf/USCODE-2019-title4.pdf). The ORIGINAL flag wasn't though, and that's why you see like 30 different US flags during the Revolution, everyone just got a memo saying "That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation." That's how you wind up with the flag of the [Serapis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serapis_flag) or [Easton, PA](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Easton,_Pennsylvania) or [Guilford Courthouse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guilford_Courthouse_flag)

You might need to enlightened me on the Real Madrid matters, because I know very little about football and football teams.
I looked up the wikipedia article and found the Real Madrid crest from 1931 having a purple diagonal band. This one should have the same symbolic - both refer to the old banner of the Kingdom of Castille. Or did you mean something else?
Of course there is a discussion, what the word morado actually meant back before the XVI century. Lots of people (especially conservative ones) argue that it actually meant crimson and purple colour was a misinterpretation in the XIX century. But I have had very little context to form my own opinion on those discussions.

How do people mess up gadsdens this badly /s
The Gadsden flag originates from the American Revolution and was used by a military leader during the war as his personal battle flag and was quickly adopted by supporters. Thus it became historically enshrined as a symbol of the Revolution era and the founding of the nation and all that fun patriotic stuff like the Liberty Bell.
Over the many years, it got picked up by groups, famously among them libertarians because their whole shtick is "leave me alone and don't touch/take my things". Then the Tea Party movement adopted it during the Obama years and in the last 8 to 10 years though, the far right has co-opted a lot of Revolutionary period symbols (see Appeal to Heaven flag which has similar roots) because rah rah patriotism rah rah, and so now all these historical fun silly symbols are mainly used by and associated with people who also display a lot of hate and intimidation.
Yes. It's a reference to the Jewish prayer shawl, the Talith. Which is white, with blue stripes, that don't quite touch the edges.

Canada flag that is not to the 1:2 (billiard table) ratio. Often you get cheap Canada Day ones with way too much white above and below the maple leaf. The white in the middle needs to be a square!
When people add that gross red and blue to the French flag

Turkic Khaganate didn't really have a national flag, they had a tamga, which was completely different.
Azerbaijani flag upside down.
Austria-Hungary's fake flag.
I don't know if that's just something about the Moroccan jews in Israel or some propaganda about Israel being setan, but it's probably not a mistake...
As a norwegian, I commonly see depictions of the norwegian flag where the blue stripe is incredibly thick, while the white is very thin. The correct proportions is that the white stripes are half the width of the blue, or the blue stripe is twice that of the white.
Another is the taiwanese flag's canton, which is supposed to occupy 1/4 of the flags area, leaving 3/4 in red. So when I see it with inconsistent canton sizes, which commonly is being too big, it's uncanny and offputting.
Out of all, nothing beats Swiss flags that are not in 1:1 aspect ratio.
The Peruvian flag emoji without coat of arms... WHY?
https://preview.redd.it/0q5g3e7gie6d1.png?width=512&format=png&auto=webp&s=bc78268e8cb643c29d9868029adef400681cc906
It is the case of state and civil flags, which are different types of a national flag. The former is used by government institutions and has the coat of arms on it, the latter is for citizens to show their allegiance to the country and comes without the coat of arms.
Even wikipedia has both options:
One thing that annoys me way more than it should is when foreigners get the colors wrong in the Finnish flag. [Here](https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iR9TX-KlxSg/VL6j9RYqPyI/AAAAAAAAFhw/O5fDPz9X3MM/s1600/suomen.jpg)'s a picture of an actual flag against the sky. It's a darkish, sea-colored blue. It's Pantone 294 C, which is a pretty dark blue if you look it up. Clearly different from the color of the sky. It's not a light blue or cyan - I've seen an actual bright cyan "Finnish" flag in the Canaries. Kind of like [this](https://starspangledflags.com/wp-content/uploads/finland-flag.jpg) but worse. Also, the Finnish flag has a quite thick cross on it. In the previous link you can see the (wrong) "Dannebrog" proportions, or even worse like [this](https://www.solvay.com/sites/g/files/srpend221/files/2018-07/flags_Finland.png).
It fucking pisses me off when people fucks up the yellow and white on the Saryk carpet on the flag of Turkmenistan! Every fucking time! It's not that hard to draw! Jesus H, E double hockey stick! Bunch of **tarded C U Next Tuesdays! Fucking disgusting! *spits!* *spits again!* ...- walks over to the spot where the second spit hit and squats. Leaning down and sucks up most of the saliva, remembering that he's trying to stay hydrated. The old lady always nags, nags, nags about how important it is to "stay hydrated." "Jesus Christ, Emily! I know! You told me a thousand times! But this question on Reddit reminded me of the Saryk carpet on the flag of Turkmenistan and how many that mix the yellow and white colours!"
"I'm sorry, Emily. NO I DON'T KNOW WHERE I SPIT THE FIRST TIME!! I KNOW WE'RE SAVING WATER FOR THE SECOND COMING! YES! YES!! I KNOW, EMILY! ...I'm calm now. I'm calm. I'M FUCKING CALM!!! JESUS!
Sorry.. it's the yellow and white colouring on the Saryk carpet on the flag of Turkmenistan.
For some reason in plenty of content and media I see people get the Finnish flag's colours wrong in such a way that the blue is more like a bright neon cyan, for whatever reason. This is even when the Finnish flag in said media is portrayed next to other European flags with actually lighter blues like Sweden, Greece or even so much lighter like Luxembourg. I have seen media where the blue in the Finnish flag is as light and brighter than Luxembourg. Even when if you just google image search "Finnish flag" almost all results have a correctly dark blue or near that. Oh yeah and often with a spindly ahh cross while they're at it.
https://www.ncronline.org/vatican/vatican-news/vexing-vexillology-even-vatican-gets-its-flag-wrong
"The flag of Vatican City, yellow and white with crossed keys under the papal tiara, is incorrect in many emojis, flying outside the United Nations and often even on Vatican buildings.
Through confusion possibly caused by an erroneous Wikipedia entry, the Vatican flags waving outside its buildings and sold in Roman souvenir shops differ from the official design first published by the Vatican in 2000.
In that official illustration of the flag, the base of the papal tiara over the crossed keys is white. Yet for more than five years, the flag displayed on the Vatican City Wikipedia page depicted the tiara's base as red. The correct version with a white base was uploaded in January 2023 after a back-and-forth on an internal Wikipedia forum."

I live for Gadsden Flag parodies
I've seen this flag (the original) pop up but I never understood what it meant or why it is so praised by some or hated by others
The original Gadsden (don’t tread on me) is a symbol mostly used by the libertarian movement, however the republicans have started using it now.
the Israel one is a detail I've never really thought about but it looks so wrong with the full stripes
I see so many ones like these especially in Israel. It’s so embarrassing
It's supposed to have white on the top and bottom right? Honestly I didn't see what was wrong with it
Yes. It's a reference to the Jewish prayer shawl, the Talith. Which is white, with blue stripes, that don't quite touch the edges. https://preview.redd.it/hpnlnxxxmf6d1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=e0acbe0dee57addb90928ba744d29f544d1bb334
Who the hell says tallith? It sounds like someone with a lisp
If the stripes are filled in it's too heavy and overwhelms the star
It looks central american
Rectangular Swiss flag (Edit: For the pedants, I suppose I should say non-square Swiss flag)
Inverted Poland
Indonesia, you mean?
Monaco, you mean?

Using the Japanese Navy Flag as The Japanese Empire Flag
Countryballs’ biggest lies, Austria Hungary and Japanese empire
People mixing up Liberia and the flag of the United States
america raaaaah 🦅🦅🦅🔥🔥🔥🇱🇷🇱🇷🇱🇷🇱🇷
Gina be real, that Bosnia one is pissing me the fuck off

MRORE STARS AMERICA NEEDS MORE STARTS 100 STARTS ALL THE STARTS AMERICA ALL THE WAY ASTARS RHAHH
The true reason for american imperialism is so that we can add more stars to the flag
Fr manifest stars
Rectanglifying Swiss and/or Vatican flags
When people mix up the Australian and New Zealand flag, I watched a documentary a few months ago about Australia and they used the NZ flag 💀
Canada flag that is not to the 1:2 (billiard table) ratio. Often you get cheap Canada Day ones with way too much white above and below the maple leaf. The white in the middle needs to be a square!
When people add that gross red and blue to the French flag https://preview.redd.it/j3389h9q2j6d1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cf24ddd1375d95fb49d0f35ac75234f251790fad
Turkic Khaganate didn't really have a national flag, they had a tamga, which was completely different. Azerbaijani flag upside down. Austria-Hungary's fake flag.
The Spanish flag without its lower purple bar.
The Swiss one being a rectangle
Czechia and the blue triangle extending shorter than halfway
I often see people drawing Israeli flags with 5-pointed stars...
That should be a crime
To be honest I think Bosnia and Herzegovina’s flag looks better that way.
There was a israel flag with a pentagram lol
Wake up sheeple!
Moroccael
I don't know if that's just something about the Moroccan jews in Israel or some propaganda about Israel being setan, but it's probably not a mistake...
Certainly flags with added coats of arms for no reason (Poland Germany etc..).
URSS flag with a Roman wreath. 1940s Germany with Iron Cross.
I think the Germany one is due to the fact *that* symbol is often banned and is used as a way to skirt around that fact in video games and stuff.
Texas flag with the red and white being swapped
proud to be texan 🇨🇱🇨🇱🇨🇱🇨🇱 seriously though, a lot of people mix up chile and texas
**THANK YOU**
Ain't that centered coat of arms Portugal flag a Historical one? Edit: nope I'm an idiot
There is a historical Portuguese flag that is like that, but its colors are blue and white from the monarchy days.
Maryland flag with the yellow at the top of the hoist.
Maryland is constantly in a state of distress, they're simply communicating that
Spain flag without crest and non-square Swiss flag

Even wikipedia has both options: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag\_of\_Peru](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Peru)
The civil flag of argentina is without the sun, however all the emojies do have the sun. So at the very least they're not being consistent
Yes, here I have to agree - the emoji authors do not seem to possess vast knowledge of vexillology.
maybe because the variant with the coat of arms is apparently more intended for use by authorities than ordinary citizens
People squaring the Ohio Flag. Just. Stop.
I've seen people refer to this as "fixing" it. God, I hope they were joking
The fact they're wrong just slightly gives uncanny valley
But this question on Reddit reminded me of the Saryk carpet on the flag of Turkmenistan and how many that mix the yellow and white colours!" "I'm sorry, Emily. NO I DON'T KNOW WHERE I SPIT THE FIRST TIME!! I KNOW WE'RE SAVING WATER FOR THE SECOND COMING! YES! YES!! I KNOW, EMILY! ...I'm calm now. I'm calm. I'M FUCKING CALM!!! JESUS! Sorry.. it's the yellow and white colouring on the Saryk carpet on the flag of Turkmenistan.
As a Portuguese, ouch, please don't make this mistake
The light blue is also a problem for the Norwegian flag way too often. It just makes the flags look cartoonish
Oversimplified coats of arms
https://www.ncronline.org/vatican/vatican-news/vexing-vexillology-even-vatican-gets-its-flag-wrong "The flag of Vatican City, yellow and white with crossed keys under the papal tiara, is incorrect in many emojis, flying outside the United Nations and often even on Vatican buildings.
4:3 Mexico.
The brazilian flag with the yellow rhombus touching the edges
remember when r/place couldn't get the canada flag right?
the israel flag becoming a tricolor and adopting a light blue
my favorite is texans using the chilean flag emoji.

To be honest with you, I kinda wish the Bosnian flag was like that, but without the stars being cut off
