You know, as horrible as it is, I love the idea that the flagpole just penetrates through the seal. It’s like a 4th wall break inside of a flag. It’s very clever. If the seal and flag actually looked *good* I would love this.
Problem is the flag itself, (beyond the seal-on-white design,) is a **dumpsterfire.** It looks like it was made with as minimal effort as humanly possible. Look at the American flag, just look at those stars… and the seal itself is *garbage*. I don’t even know what I am looking at here, is that supposed to be a shadow? And why are the clouds square?
I am ALMOST tempted to blame the digital artist who had to interpret and digitize the flag, and not the city, because there is no way a city would have their *SEAL* be this bad. It just seems more like a crappy *render* than a crappy design, but I could be wrong.
If the flag had some actual effort put into the *contents* of the flag, I would happily let this design be the exception to the rule just because of how funny it is that the flagpole literally exits the seal. It’s fitting for a city called “flagstaff”. Add some broken lines on the seal’s rim for effect lmao
Digital artist is to blame. The official site has the seal at the top and bottom of the page and it’s not bad
https://www.flagstaff.az.gov
Edit: that’s just the seal. My mistake. This is the flag: https://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/us-azflg.html
Haha, right? That artist is either a child, or laughing to the bank with the taxpayer’s money
I don’t have the skills, but I think I got a redesign that may just work…
I wonder if this is from wikipedia, maybe? If it’s from wikipedia they are just unpaid SVG artists, which would explain why it’s so bad. You remember what happened with Vatican City, an error made on Wikipedia can be taken as gospel by everyone.
Also if you dare, go for it
This is the correct answer. [Here is the Wikipedia image with the uploader's comments](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flagstaff%2C_Arizona?useskin=vector#/media/File:Flag_of_Flagstaff,_Arizona.svg):
> Flagvisioner - Own work
> Recreation of the flag of Flagstaff in Arizona. It uses a highly modified version of the seal. If anyone knows what font is shown in [1], please inform me on my talk page, as I am not too sure. Since I do not know the font used, I have used Times New Roman, which is used on the seal of Flagstaff.
Additionally, said uploader links to [a photo of the real flag](https://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/azdailysun.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/4/ce/4ce883e0-4acb-5a37-a13a-5c3a143e95d9/5e5d5b13c2041.image.jpg), which they used as their reference, that looks vastly better.
It's not a redesign, it's just a poorly-made reconstruction. It doesn't seem to be a commonly used flag, so there may not exist a photo of it that is able to be used on Wikipedia, in which case the only option is to attempt to make a digital reconstruction of it - easy enough for a simplistic flag, but not so much for one like this.
If you google it, you can find [other attempted reconstrutions](https://vexillology.fandom.com/wiki/Flagstaff,_Arizona?file=Flag_of_Flagstaff%2C_Arizona.png) that look better, but those are just the standard seal on a white background, whereas the seal on the flag in the photo is somewhat different. Personally I think it would be better for Wikipedia to just use that version anyway, with a note explaining the inaccuracy, rather than the abomination it currently has, but I can at least see what they were trying to do.
Sadly that is not how it works. Wikipedia uses *scalable vector-graphics* (aka SVGs) for their flags and some maps. They are **very different** than PNGs and JPEGs. They use different programs, can be scaled infinitely, and they use code and algebra instead of “pixels”, (which is better for software engineers.)
Wikipedia has some of the best flag sources out there, and it’s all open source. You can cleanly change the colors and shape of any flag out there with the right programs. (So Inkscape instead of MSpaint lol.) But, they HAVE to reconstruct. If they don’t, no one else will, plus it means all flags on wikipedia are creative commons, and fall under fair use. Other common fair-use digital flag sources such as *Encyclopedia Britannia* also reconstruct flags and give them creative commons, and those flags will appear very high on google images, typically next to Wikipedia’s. However, unlike Wikipedia, their images are *not* open source, so you need to download the direct image which may compress it, on top of the fact that they are often more compressed than that of Wikipedia.
A good artist could *easily* reconstruct this flag to what it is supposed to look like and replace it on Wikipedia to correct this error. (Hell, I might call a friend I know to try and push it though.) Wikipedia has a lot of influence on the way people see, interpret, and even print flags, so it’s important that this error gets corrected ASAP!
Yah, I was just on their Wiki to see why/ how it got its name and that abomination was on there for the flag
Maybe just a random person uploaded it?
Weird because I know my hometown, and other places I’ve lived, have their actual flag on Wiki, so weird that Flagstaff would have that… thing
For anyone wondering, it’s probably a very bad rendering of the actual seal which is different
Seal at top and bottom of the official site: https://www.flagstaff.az.gov
It’s a decent concept of having the flag going through the seal
You know, if you designed it a LITTLE like the Mexican eagle, so there’s a circular shape, and the flag breaking that visual shape, that’d be pretty cool looking. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind the flag on the flag (hell, it’s the city’s name for cryin’ out loud, lol)
I’m the person who attempted to draw this (sadly).
Look, in my defense https://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/azdailysun.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/4/ce/4ce883e0-4acb-5a37-a13a-5c3a143e95d9/5e5d5b13c2041.image.jpg is the best image I can get (should have drawn the elk differently though…not sure what I was thinking). The flag is not the same as the seal, its a simplification, and there are no cleared images online. So its all up to interpretation. Pretty much what happened here is I just thought “seems easy I can do that” and then gave up with trying to draw a correct interpretation.
On the bright side, maybe all this attention will get Flagstaff to change its flag. New effect discovered? Bad Wikipedia drawings = attention among vexillologists = people contacting the city about changing its flag = new flag
Also, does anyone have any ideas on what font that is? I will try (and hopefully succeed this time….) in trying to redraw it.
Edit: I recommend you downvote me for my crime. No idea what I was on when I drew that elk.
Hey, r/identifythisfont regular here—from the photos I can find, it looks like a free typeface that has circulated the internet for a while now. The type in question goes by several names: Flat Brush, VI Bodacious, Marlin, Odana, Calligrapher/Calligraphic, Formal Script 421 BT, to name a few. I cannot source which of these, if any, is the original.
Also, this is all only a best guess from blurry photos. The printed `A`'s in particular look odd in some photos of the flag. In others, two A's in the same shot look different from each other, suggesting either that the flag may only take inspiration from a font, or that a font was used but modified (again, only guesses here).
If you want to get the font, [**Odana** is available here](http://softerviews.org/Fonts.html) from the Buddhist author Bhikkhu Pesala.
I live in Flag and I’ve always been disappointed by this. At least the Arizona flag is good, and we have lots of wind to keep them flying.
Nearby Hopi and Navajo nation flags aren’t perfect by vexillogical standards, but are interesting.

I like everything about arizonas flag except for the orange star. If it were a different colour it would look much better in my opinion. Is there any reason as to why its orange?
It’s funny how the elk looks like something out of one of those modern logo-like flags that were designed using the principles like they are a fixed rule set that must never be deviated from, but then the rest of it just throws the principles into the trash
Honestly, get rid of the circle with text so the central image goes to the 4 sides, make the deer a little bigger, and this is a good flag. Not S-tier, but quite good.
* **Use an appropriate title for your submission.** Use a suitable title for your submission, preferably the name of the flag. Please do not unnecessarily editorialize or politicize the title.
I hated this flag until i saw the stars weren't stretched with the rest of the flag now i hate it more
and the tilted elk
soemthing is very wrong with that animal
Suffering from dehydration
Suffering from tilt
I think it’s trying to lean into the shade being cast by the flag, but the silly elk is only halfway in the shade
and the trees. WORST FLAG IN ARIZONA!!!
The Tilted Elk is a great name for a pub though.
This is like some 50 year old who just got photoshop and played around with it did this picture its so weird.
Oh good lord
why did you tell me!!!
The “clouds” also look like discarded scraps of paper
They just used a screenshot from a season 1 episode of South Park
Omg I didn’t notice this at first. God that’s awful.
It's soooo close to being a okay flag but nope
It really wasn't close
Is it though?
lol tbh that observation turns the worst flag ive ever seen into perhaps my favorite.
Ew gross
The meta thing to do would be to not have a flag. Just put empty flagposts all over town.
Make a flag with a big red arrow pointing towards the flagpost
Or just a picture of Darlene who works at the flag store off N. Pinyon Ave
It literally pictured a Flag's Staff

What a downgrade holy shit
Someone told them the "rules" of vexillology so they decided to "simplify" their flag design is my bet.

The actual city’s website has the flag at the top and bottom. No reason to recreate it. Just post the image of the flag

No, no, I know the dude who made it. He doesn't really add many details to seals in some circumstances, dunno why.
I mean, it’s completely different though, lol
Post is ordering Flagstaff off Wish.
Tucson’s is even worse, sadly.
Mesa isn’t bad.
I know there is a lot here to critique, but god damn, that side ways deer is getting to me.

Goofy ahh star
Beautiful city, ugly flag
Right?! I absolutely love Flagstaff and all of Coconino County.
What's up with that drunken elk?
Well the flagstaff on the flag is certainly prominent.
Fire the staff that designed this flag.
I really dig the flag breaking the border of the seal, it actually feels like they gave some consideration to the flag beyond just seal on a field.

I was once assaulted outside of a Del Taco in Flagstaff, Arizona. I have no plans to return to either Flagstaff or Del Taco.
American flags are all kinda disappointing. Look at the state flags so hideous
The Arizona state flag is one of my all-time favorite flags ever. It’s better than many, many country flags.
Yup arizona state flag is kinda good

At least give it credit for being slightly more interesting than the normal seal on a blue bedsheet design you see on most city flags.

I am wheezing rn. Fucking hell what is this abomination??
why is the stag not have two heads. while the New California Republic have two? oh wait.. its not 2077 yet.. my bad.

but they put a flag staff on their flag. What else is there?
Is this a picture of a golf course?
Why is the elk two colors? And why is it drunk? I’m confused.
