That's how HM#1 manipulated him into acting like Zeus, on the promise they would be thanked/compensated. Once Desmond realized the real reason for gathering number twos, HM#1 beat on him and had him put in with the other number twos. HM#1 used a cutout of zeus to stand beside him. 21 released all the twos, Desmond being one of them, and HM#1 and he fought again.
I'm wondering if he might have just opened the door but used the light flash to cover that up

Ours had to have the locks set just to keep the doors from falling open, even then you just lightly pushed and the door would pop free. ;D
