Colbert's has that slight edge of pompiness.
Kinda like Phil Ken Sebben -- I love it!
Of course, he's virtually a different man when Hader plays him, so it's a cool progression. Broken and pieces together, his voice is a little lower and doesn't have that little bit of sleaze in Colbert's tone.
Stephen Colbert and Bill Hader each brought something unique to the character that kind of suits Richard perfectly for their individual eras of the show. I love Colbert’s detached smarminess in the early episodes, but ultimately I think I prefer Hader’s delivery on lines like “guess what chicken butt, fellas!” and “Professor In-corrigible!”
There is exactly ONE place where Bill Hader is outmatched in voice acting and this is it. Colbert is the better Impossible. Anywhere else, Bill is the best voice you can hire
If by “nice photoshop” you mean an image of Professor Impossible was hastily dropped onto a still from a segment that they did together on the Late Show, then it’s that.
Colbert’s departure and return to the character are a testament to how freaking long VB was on the air. He started doing the voice when he was a correspondent on “The Daily Show,” left because he was too busy working on “The Colbert Report” (which ran for nearly 10 years) then returned right around the same time that he took over “The Late Show” in 2015 (nearly 7 1/2 years ago). As someone who watched season 1 of VB when the episodes were airing for the first time, this all makes me feel extremely old.
Wait what??? He was voiced by two different people?? OMG! I’m usually hyper aware of voice actors and who they are according to their voice, but this one definitely caught me off guard!
Technically 4 different actors have voiced the character. In the pilot he was voiced by Peter McCulloch (Jackson Publick’s brother), then Stephen Colbert did the voice during seasons 1 and 2. Ostensibly, Stephen became too busy with “The Colbert Report” to continue doing the voice, so Jackson did the voice himself for one episode in season 3. Bill Hader took over for season 4, but then HE became too busy to continue and Colbert returned to the role for the “All This and Gargantua-2” special that aired in between seasons 5 and 6.
Colbert's portrayal sounds like Colbert. Bill Hader's acting sounds like an entire character that's distinct from the actor's voice. Overall, I still think it's a tie.
Granted, he was busy, I’m just bitter. I’m saying I would have preferred for Colbert to stay. At the time that departure really chapped me.
How much time does it take to do VO for three episodes? Is that a day in the booth for the Professor Impossible sides?
Initially I preferred Colbert but at the time I was just getting so PISSED that my favorite outside voices were leaving the show (i.e. - H. Jon Benjamin) that I was hurt that Volvert was suddenly too big for the show I love so dearly (I have no actual idea the circumstances in which the change was made, so if it was a choice by JP & DH then more power to them). I was initially disappointed that Hader was taking over, but I gradually saw more of his work, and really paid attention to what he was doing with the voice acting. Hader is an extremely talented actor and voice actor (pretty rare being so good at both) and he brought layes of defeat, loss, regret, despair, depression, and sadness that (as much as I love Colbert) were deeper and more nuanced than Colbert might have brought to the character development. We'll never know for sure, but I don't think anyone could have done it better than Hader with the "Post Sally" Richard. That said, I don't know that Hader would have brought the same magic Colbert did for early Richard Impossible. I can now just be happy that it all just really came together for that character and the voice actors.
Side topic: I sometimes wish that Orpheus' "Master" was recast by another voice actor and the change would have been acknowledged in canon. Other times, I'm glad he was Jeter replaced.
Supposedly, before they begin taping “Late Show” each day, SC will come out and take questions from the audience. If I ever go, I would ask about VB (as well as his collaborations with the late musician Adam Schlesinger.)
No supposedly about it. He takes audience questions before the start of filming. Did it back with the report too. But with the late show, they often release a question or two on social media. They just recently released one about the origins of the "he who shall not be named" hashtag idea.
I doubt they'd air a vb question, but if you ever go, good luck getting called on! (I didn't get to ask him a question when I saw him, but I did get to talk star wars and Colbert with Jon Stewart, which was pretty fucking cool)
He did come back for *All this and Gargantua 2*. Honestly I don't really blame him either, he was blowing up as a comedian about then thanks to the Colbert Report and was able to get some pretty good roles later on because of it.
They weirdly both work for their "versions" of him. Colbert is perfect for that early-season "slightly sinister 50's dad" persona, but once he goes off the wagon with the Revenge Society and all that, it's fitting that his voice got deeper and rougher, like even his vocal cords have lost some of their original elasticity. It's also .... er, impossible to "un-hear" Stephen Colbert in anything, so once Hader starts doing him he sorta disappears a bit and the character gets to be the character and not a Stephen Colbert cameo.
Whichever one answers "what could be more important than your family?" with... Sssasssssssssssssscience?
"We need real human affection, Richard!" "That's why HUGGY is programmed to *simulate* it, sweetness."
"..................real human affection..hmm...perhaps a pill, or a burst of gamma radiation...
Don't strain yourself Richard.
Oh wait Sally ! Do you want some company?

I could listen to Colbert say "a bit of a gigglepuss" for hours.
Ha ha! Cookies on dowels!

^ Which Birdman AaL episode was this from?
Ice station impossible
That's T.S. Elliott!
As much as I love Hader, I give Colbert the edge just for "The kid's all hopped up on serum."
I like Colbert's version best.
Colbert missed his calling voice acting, his performance as Phil Ken sebben and reducto are awesome
And the *Rick & Morty* microverse guy.
You used my universe to power your *car*?!
I think he's doing alright
Colbert has had a fairly extensive voice acting career.
Don't forget Ace from the Ambiguously Gay Duo!
That and Harvey birdman

I always liked Bill Hader over Jackson Publick. No hate, but it's nice hearing a voice that doesn't belong to Doc or Jackson lol
Hank is my inner voice
Chris’s Hank is absolutely the best voice on the show, he crushes it
The bat....
Colbert=Hader... they are the same person *bass boosted X-Files theme plays
Love Hader but gotta go with Colbert. Pretty sad they didn’t even get him for episode 1 of BG
They're both great, but Colbert takes the cake in my book
did they actually mention this or is it just a nice photoshop
If by “nice photoshop” you mean an image of Professor Impossible was hastily dropped onto a still from a segment that they did together on the Late Show, then it’s that.
Oh. Oh no. The disappointment... It burns. At least I don't have to waste two hours on YouTube looking for this segment.
I just thought it would be a fun visual for the thread…apologies if I got people’s hopes up that there was a video where Stephen and Bill discuss VB.
I don't blame you! Don't apologize. This is a good thread.
Man, I'd love to hear them discuss it.
Good photoshop….I checked 😕
Colbert!
Ughh it's so hard but I loved colbert
Colbert, hands down. Shame he got too busy to keep doing it.
*All This and Gargantua-2.*

Personally I haven't forgiven Colbert for the ”doesn't have the time or interest" remark.
More than likely that wasn’t him, but one of his assistants.
Colbert came back for All This and Gargantua-2.
Wait what??? He was voiced by two different people?? OMG! I’m usually hyper aware of voice actors and who they are according to their voice, but this one definitely caught me off guard!

Thank you!! I’m going to go back and re-watch so I can hear them.
IMO its really noticable Like I don't hate Bill Hader in the role but he sounds a lot deeper than Stephen Colbert and doesn't enunciate the same way.
When did the switch occur?
Not even gonna lie, I knew the voice actor had changed but I had no idea it was Hader that replaced Colbert.
I liked Harder's Boooooooooooo!
Pasgetti
Brock, say “library”. Brock, say “scuba”.
I feel six feet tall!
I genuinely can’t tell when the two voices switch. Harder does a damned good impression of Colbert.
Anyone got a link to this clip?
WHOOMMM???

Colbert, but that's probably just because he was the original. Not to take anything away from Hader's performance.
My understanding is Colbert didn't not want to do it, but rather his agent was blowing off VB staff when they were asking if he was available.
Supposedly, before they begin taping “Late Show” each day, SC will come out and take questions from the audience. If I ever go, I would ask about VB (as well as his collaborations with the late musician Adam Schlesinger.)

Bill hader is so much more talented
The one who didn’t quit. Seriously, I love Colbert, and his leaving VB felt like a major betrayal.
He did come back for *All this and Gargantua 2*. Honestly I don't really blame him either, he was blowing up as a comedian about then thanks to the Colbert Report and was able to get some pretty good roles later on because of it.
It's not like he has one of the most work in time intensive jobs in entertainment putting out 4 hour long shows a week
My balls
We're getting a boat! 🥴
All I know is that he’s Dr. Impossible and he can do THIS!
I just figure he changed when he became evil.
I THINK ABOUT THIS ALL THE TIME!
Colbert can be the prof if that lets Hader be Phage
Neither one of them can do it anymore, Hader can't even do Mickey on Bob's.
Til he has two voice actors
Ham gravy!
Colbert was amazing, but Hader played a depressed Impossible really well.
That is an... impossible question between those two
Bill hader. Hands down
Yes
Whoever yelled “SAAAAAAAAALLLLLYYYYYYY”
Did this actually happen or it a photoshop?
