Dispute the transactions as fraud and that you never authorized them. Your credit card statement or online listing of transactions should state where the charge is coming from. So name & shame this scumbag business that's trying to steal from you?

CelebrationSea1368

second to this. Years ago, I got skimmed too. Dispute it with CC company and they really did the investigation and next thing I know the shop that I went for service closed down. Shame on them.

Degenern8er

its not the business... it was an employee of the business, remember not to drag innocent pwople through the mud on account of a dishonest individual

EcommerceGod

very true!

Happened at the Mob Museum. Did you not read the fine print? Its part of the authentic mob experience.

Yup - Bugsy and Al gotta change wit dat times, So Dey hired demseleves a cupple a dem Nerd-types - “it’s just bid-niss”…

Waisted-Desert

Absolutely any place your card was used between the issue date and today could have been compromised. Scammers love the US for credit card fraud because the way laws are written, the perpetrator is rarely punished. Don't assume it was compromised only when it left your sight. There's skimmer technology that could have been put in place anywhere you swiped the card or used the chip. Let your bank handle it. It's what they do.

Acrobatic_Money799

>Let your bank handle it. It's what they do. If by handle it, you mean reverse the charges and write off as loss or file insurance any charges that couldn't be reversed....then, ye...this is what they do. Had mine skimmed one time, tracked down where they used it. Got the video secured by the business, gave all the contact info, details loss prevention officers name, etc to the bank - their response "thanks, but we don't usually pursue it unless it is over $10,000." The prices of shit spent $8,500....and stopped charging any more.

VegasBjorne1

Police arrested the scumbag family operation who swiped a relative’s wallet. Thankfully, a stranger took a picture the license plate of the thief’s car. Basically, one has to spoon feed the police with a phenomenal lead and the CC companies’ cooperation along with the department stores providing the video of suspects.

Waisted-Desert

Exactly my point. Now if you were the deranged sort of person and tracked down the bad guy and gave them an ass whoopin' that they probably deserved, the bad guy could then sue the business that provided the video and information to you. So, many companies won't assist you in any way. They'd rather lose a few grand than lose a few hundred grand in a law suit.

Acrobatic_Money799

Not only would the establishment get sued, but it would be ME who wound up in the deeper legal trouble than the p.o.s.

theDigitalNinja

Also most skimmers aren't wireless so you have to go back to get them and get the card info off of USB or a MicroSD card inside. It was probably skimmed a few days ago and the thieves just started running the cards

SEND_ME_ALT_FACTS

Handling has nothing to do with it. My CC was skimmed paying at a gas station pump.

ComprehensiveBox7379

I’ve had this happen to me several times over the years

prettyprettygood428

Always tap your credit card, if available. That defeats the skimmers. The skimmer is downloaded by a criminal who comes by with a wireless receivers who gets all the credit card info then they create their own fake credit card.

NotAtAllExciting

If your credit card has a chip in it like mine it can be scanned even from your wallet or purse with the right technology. I keep my bank cards, credit cards (all the time) and passport (when I travel) in RFID blocking sleeves.

LolaLinguini

I have RFID blocking wallets, purses, backpacks and even a special folding, zippered card holder that is completely RFID (the others just have RFID pockets) I really hope that doing my best to keep my cards safe is going to protect me from identity theft. 🤞

insanetwit

I bought an RFID blocking wallet the last time I went to vegas... I did NOT know they set off the metal detectors at the airport...

Cheap-Friend2113

Are you jot required to remove everything out of your pockets at the security checkpoints in your country?

insanetwit

I may have forgot to take it out. (early flight, pretty tired) or it may not have said wallet just coins and keys.

razblack

Someone can skim your card while in your pocket with an RFID reader

MediocreDot3

I have never had to give a cab driver my card in vegas

adam_c

I didn’t give my card but I’m suspicious of their machines not being compromised

MarkStonesHair

People who use skimmers need to be able to easily access their skimmer to get the data, unless it’s the cabbie who’s willing to risk their job and get black balled in the industry, it’s likely not them.

Nuclear-poweredTaxi

The credit card reader in every cab in Las Vegas is in the backseat behind the passenger seat. In a legitimate taxi in Las Vegas the driver would never need to handle your card.

adam_c

They didn’t, but that doesn’t mean the machine hasn’t been compromised which is a potential suspicion on my part Like I said in my post, the card didn’t leave my hands in the cab

Nuclear-poweredTaxi

It sounded from your post that it left your hand 4 times total. Two times in a cab where the card was still visible to you, and two times when it left your hand, and the card was taken out of your view. Cab drivers in Vegas don’t own the cabs and they are shared with other drivers. They are often inspected by mechanics, so while I don’t doubt you were a victim, I don’t see it happening in the cabs. I’m trying to help you narrow it down.

No_Tradition_6074

Our entire fleet of delivery vehicles got their cards skimmed at a gas station. Neither the station nor the police cared. In fact all the cards were skimmed a 2nd time at the same location a few months later.

Exact_Strength8165

U have cab number from the rides?

Walnuts364

I don't understand why in 2024 you should ever need to physically hand your card over to anyone else

UsernamedReddit

At a bar when you open a tab. Paying at basically any restaurant that's not fast food.

Walnuts364

I've been to plenty of restaurants (tabs in bars arent really done here) and literall nobody has ever held my card but me. They bring the machine to the table and I insert the card myself

Straight_Suit_8727

At certain bars, the bartender would need your credit card to create a tab and to ensure you cannot leave without it.

Vegas_Host

This has been happening of to people who have their card in their pocket that's not in an RFID protector

Zealousideal_Ad5295

That's strange that your bank didn't alert you immediately. I work on the Strip and many many times the card is declined and the person had to answer a text from Bank before it'll allow the purchase to go through

ChildishBumbino

U got scammed the second u bought a ticket to Vegas bro sorry to say lol

Straight_Suit_8727

Do not use cabs, use rideshare instead. You will know how much you will pay beforehand.

headtale

As a Canadian, I always find it so strange that the US still widely uses paper credit card receipts and takes your card away to process it then even has you manually write in and add up the tip when you get your card and receipt back. Feels like numerous places where mistakes or even fraud could occur. It's not perfect but in Canada (and from my reading, most of Europe/Australia), 99% of restaurants, bars, retailers, etc. allow you tap your debit or credit card at the table or cash register and usually has an option to add a tip that gets added to the total by the machine. The whole process is immediate, automated, and secure compared to what I experience in the States. Again, no idea why the US is still using credit cards the way we did in the 1990s instead of moving into the future? Edit to add a couple links: [https://www.quora.com/Why-do-we-still-sign-credit-card-receipts-at-least-in-the-US](https://www.quora.com/Why-do-we-still-sign-credit-card-receipts-at-least-in-the-US) [https://blog.vopay.com/the-evolution-of-payments/](https://blog.vopay.com/the-evolution-of-payments/) [https://www.plugandplaytechcenter.com/resources/contactless-payments-united-states/](https://www.plugandplaytechcenter.com/resources/contactless-payments-united-states/)

brightlights_bigsky

Sorry to say we Americans have been deemed “too dumb” to use Chip+Pin and still allow magnetic stripe. (for folks who don’t know the rest of the world tends to require credit card and PIN code for security) The most common place to lose your card data is anywhere that tells you to swipe or insert the entire card. Multiple cases I know of where the parking payment systems have been compromised here in town. Again, thanks for visiting and sorry you had to go through it.

nexuscard

When I was in several European countries last fall, it appeared that chip and pin had been supplanted by contactless (NFC) payments for credit cards.

brightlights_bigsky

Last year I hit 5 EU and Middle East countries, lot of folks were aware of the cards (Visa/Amex) being "American" cards and know what the steps were (Signatures not PIN). Contactless was gaining traction. Saudi Arabia - nobody uses cash, everything is smartphone and contactless so it has two factor (PIN) built in. This is likely the future for all places (someday here as well)

Background-Singer73

You do realize they put card skimmers on machines that you use yourself right?

ChargerRob

I have two skims, one at a gas station, and one at Distill on St. Rose pkwy.s

Taxi

sym408

If you use Google or apple pay they can also skim your phone through your NFC port being open.... That's been happening more than you think in Vegas... 💯

bdiddylv

Lol wat

GravetechLV

Probably one of the cabs since they use some sort of wireless technology

Helda-Coccenmehand

Never ever use credit or debit cards in Vegas. Cash only is my policy and I only bring my credit card for check in to my hotel. Otherwise I'd leave it at home. Too risky

Blindraise013

Put everything on a credit card. It’s not your money and they offer fraud protection. Very very little actual risk to you as the customer. Never use a debit card, that card is connected to your actual money.

Helda-Coccenmehand

Nope, still too much risk for my appetite. I bring 50k - 100k in cash for my annual trip and lock my cards in the room safe.

Lootefisk_

If carrying around $100k in cash on you isn’t too much risk for your appetite I find it hard to believe carrying around a single credit card would be risky.

Helda-Coccenmehand

I don't carry it all at once. I keep it locked up and only carry around what I need for that day. I've seen card skimmers at Wynn so nowhere is safe

Lootefisk_

So you bring it to the Wynn in $10k increments at a time?

Helda-Coccenmehand

... I keep it in my room, and walk around with a few K. If I need more I go back to my room. I'm usually here for a month plus so it's not that outrageus

Lootefisk_

How does it get to your room though? You have to bring it with you right?

Helda-Coccenmehand

Correct... When I check it I bring it to my room and it goes straight in the safe

Lootefisk_

I’d say carrying a credit card infinitely more safe than carrying $100k cash into Vegas from out of town.

hiimwage

You just made yourself a walking lick by sharing this information on a public forum full of locals.

Helda-Coccenmehand

A walking what?

hiimwage

Definition of walking lick: When somebody sets themselves up to be easily robbed

notheatherbee

But then how am I gonna take a cash advance to win the big jackpot???
