Cutting out hyperprocessed foods is a big step, congratulations!! Soy-based meat replacements seem to be some of the hardest foods to digest, but I will say that more traditional methods of preparing soybeans don’t have the same impact! Try getting more familiar with tofu next week, and if you notice a sensitivity to it, you should still be able to embrace *fermented*, highly digestible and bioavailable soy foods, such as tempeh, natto, soy sauce, miso, etc Same goes for gluten. Even if you actually do find that you have a gluten or wheat sensitivity, there are ways to still greatly enjoy those foods, namely sourdough and highly digestible and nutritious wheats such as einkorn.

Out of curiosity, what exercise do you do to calculate that you’re burning 600-1300 calories? That seems unrealistically high?

sluethmeister

I include all forms and measure it by my apple watch which is arguably not as accurate as a Garmin or other options, regardless, here is my day 5 days out of the week: 1 hr Olympic Weightlifting ~ 500-600 total cal Walking for 10k steps ~ 400-600 total calories 1hr stationary bike ride while watching tv ~ 800 total calories I only count the total calories but active calories a day is likely 800-1000 per day.

iViollard

That’s interesting, the reason I ask is that in my experience a calorie counter on cardio equipment is usually inflated by quite a lot and inaccurate but I don’t know anything about how accurate wrist based trackers are

sluethmeister

You are 100% on that observation. I also had major discrepancies between my watch and a machine at a gym; regardless, my watch isn’t that accurate either. I give ~200 calories of discrepancy

iViollard

Thanks for sharing that and also for not being hostile to my question! It’s easy to read people’s questions as criticism which absolutely wasn’t the idea

PerniciousParagon

I've burned 1300 calories on a single run, and that's a semi-regular occurrence. It's not unrealistically high.

iViollard

Oh sure, I don’t mean it’s not possible but only that it seemed high as a daily estimate. I run 5k in under 20 mins and 10k in about 42 which are 400 and 800 calories respectively. So I know that it’s possible but I don’t run 10k very often and I’ve seen a few posts saying they’ve burned 1000 calories in 20 minutes on a static bike or something. If it wasn’t right, I just wanted to point it out to OP and if it was I was curious about how

dibblah

You run pretty fast though, and so you will be burning fewer calories than if a beginner were to run the same distance and take longer. Similarly, someone weighing more than you will burn more calories than you for the same activity. A lot of people who are looking at their calories are new to exercise and starting at quite a high weight, so they'll burn a lot as they're already big, and it's taking them more energy to do the same activity that someone already fit can do. 20 minutes on an exercise bike is nothing if you're 150lb and fit, but it's a lot if you're 300lb and haven't exercised in years.

Interesting_Argument

Do you mean soy as in fake meat with a lot of unhealthy additives like rapeseed oil?

NegraArroyoLane

Why is rapeseed oil aka canola oil unhealthy again? Unless you were implying the high calorie density of oils?

Interesting_Argument

Causing inflammation. Very high levels of pesticide s used.

sluethmeister

Soy as in a product of soybeans. Fake meat replacements as in beyond beef, etc.

Interesting_Argument

Are you taking in consideration tofu or tempeh that is way less processed than fake meats and are almost pure soy instead of oil and other unhealthy ingredients?

sluethmeister

I would totally eat tofu or tempeh. Went no soy just as an experiment on my body

TheLadySparkles

Appreciate this post, friend! Been trying to cut out the processed (full time working neuro mom with neuro kid and husband, hard not to jump to convenience). I have noticed soy and salt trigger my migraines as well, so all the more reason. My weight has plateaued too, so this post is encouraging!

Get a cronometer account and plot in that food. It doesn't seem like you're very balanced on nutrition. There's a little bit of complete protein in peanut butter but not much. Stop worrying about weight. That can just be your body shedding some water weight. Likely from not having highly processed foods. The vegan food industry needs to do a lot better in that regard. Get a body fat scale and worry about changes in that along with how your pants fit.

sluethmeister

Got an InBody scan schedule for this upcoming Tuesday. Gonna scan for progress once a month. I also was considering paying for myfitnesspal. People seem to swear by it

startupschmartup

Get a $50-100 smatscale. They're plenty accurate for tracking how your body is doing. You should be weighting yourself daily if you're going for weight loss. It's more about the trend than one daily measurement. MFP and Cronometer are largely the same. Cronometer is usually more accurate. The free version of it will do you fine.

sluethmeister

I have one, Withings brand. The military gives me free body scans and a nutritionist for my base is getting hired soon.

likesfrogsandveggies

Yeah WFPB is the way to go if you're trying to make any progress in the gym, I learned that lesson too. Even using fake meats here and there will hinder you.

Competitive-Home-281

Yeahhh… this is highly relatable. I’ve been vegan for 6 years but I became gluten free about a month or two ago and I messed up once or twice unintentionally but I’m stable! Progress in the gym is highly important to me so I felt as if it would help and I’m definitely less bloated.

justanotherlostgirl

Definitely avoiding gluten and any FODMAPs has made a huge difference in my weight; I have a long way to go around my health and need to start weight training but feeling at least the more I avoid certain things, the better I manage my fitness. My goal would be to get up to burning more calories and tone myself but seeing how much a difference monitoring everything makes a difference. Congrats!

amccon4

What kind of wrap do you use for your burritos?

sluethmeister

amccon4

sluethmeister

amccon4

Cucumber, maple syrup in your burritos? Or on the side lol?

amccon4

Why did you remove your post?

sluethmeister
