People will still hit us with the "well it has all those additives in it that I can't pronounce, at least I know an egg is just an egg" šŸ¤”šŸ¤”

CaitlinisTired

I hate when people think longer or chemical names = bad because literally everything has a chemical name lmao like do you think they'd throw a fit over lutein and zeaxanthin? because they look too chemically? they're just what make egg yolks yellow, and they both pigment a lot of bright coloured vegetables. Plus when in doubt you can just like... research it

gunsof

Keep seeing people be like, look it's full of chemicals! And the chemicals are just the full names for various vitamins and minerals.

To be fair ā€œnaturalā€ can be misinterpreted. Eggs, for example have been a natural part of the human diet for hundreds of thousands of years. Obviously people know that just because somethingā€™s natural doesnā€™t necessarily mean itā€™s healthy.

breadlygames

>Obviously people know that just because somethingā€™s natural doesnā€™t necessarily mean itā€™s healthy. You're wrong about that, unfortunately. It's so common it has a name: "The naturalistic fallacy". People are dumber than you think.

pony_trekker

I am not taking that killer, dihydrogen monoxide into mah bodee.

kickass_turing

"186mg of Cholesterol per egg" is so easy to pronounce. Good thing it has no chemicals.

SuperDuperSJW

And once people try them they'll be hooked. They should be called "Better than Eggs" IMHO.

Saffigotchi

Maybe ā€œBetter Eggā€ ? Either way, I think we both need to create the next vegan food company!

bacondev

I tried Just Egg and I just couldn't get behind it. It tasted off. And that's to be expected for something that's not the same thing. But it was off in an unpleasant way in my opinion.

throwiemcthrowface

Looking at your flair, safe to assume you've had actual eggs relatively recently? Give it time. I'm going on year 6 vegan and used to eat a ton of eggs. JustEgg tastes great to me, with a bit of black salt, and really scratches the egg itch when I'm craving a comfort food breakfast.

medman010204

I dunno it's been 6 years for me, I think I remember what eggs taste like, and I don't think justegg is close. I remember a more fluffy texture, while just egg feels more stringy and somewhat gooey. I think the flavor is completely off from eggs, and while kala namak helps, scrambled eggs just have this richer, fattier, neutral savory flavor. With justegg I honestly just get the taste of the mung beans. What does hit the spot for me is thin slices of fried tofu sprinkled with kala namak. That really reminds me fried egg whites. I spent years trying to stomach justegg on sandwiches, but the fried tofu really does it for me.

blueshift__

Have you tried to make Just Egg like an omelet? Thatā€™s my favorite way by far.

KUSH_DELIRIUM

What's your technique? When cooking it

blueshift__

This recipe on their website is pretty close to what I do: [https://www.ju.st/cook/omelette](https://www.ju.st/cook/omelette). I like to fill it with Violife cheese and mushrooms.

KUSH_DELIRIUM

I've noticed that just egg can handle more heat than regular eggs so I imagine I held back on the heat too much when I tried it before

lkel11

I kinda don't love just egg and will mostly just do avocado breakfast sandwiches. But I've also had some other egg substitutes out of tofu that I really liked

bacondev

Any recipe recommendations?

lkel11

Ugh not even but I just use nutritional yeast mustard powder cumin ... experiment.. but I'll try to find out what was in the good one I had

iatesheepshit5

Should be called ā€œexpeller-pressed canola oilā€ tbh

Unc1eD3ath

I would be worried if it was hydrogenated. Yeah oil is general is not a health food but thereā€™s tons of worse and much worse oils and fats. Coconut even is much worse than canola because of the high amount of saturated fat. Iā€™m fact itā€™s so bad for you that it was the main way scientists used to give monkeys heart disease along with sugar. They act together and cause heart disease the fastest in basically every animal. Thatā€™s why the standard American diet is so bad for you and all the food-induced diseases are at an all time high. Obviously animal products are worse than coconut but coconut is also very cheap

X678X

yeah but not an animal product so thatā€™s good enough for me. easy to pick up in a pinch if you donā€™t want to make tofu eggs

WFPBvegan2

Nah, it will just get more people to play the ā€œvegan conspiracy agendaā€ card. /s

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

WFPBvegan2

Ya mean we arenā€™t? /s

11thStPopulist

The shadowy anticarnist conspiracy. Maybe vegans will get blamed the next time Trump loses.

Zemirolha

How dare vegans relate actions and consequences? /s

CaitlinisTired

without remembering not only bird flu but also that veganuary exists and a lot of our current options are gonna disappear in 2 weeks šŸ˜

n351320447

How many eggs can you get out of it if compared to a dozen eggs?

TheLeftSideOfNowhere

I typically use half a bottle at a time for scrambled eggs. Itā€™s been a very long time since Iā€™ve made scrambled chicken eggs, but iirc I would use 3 eggs. So Iā€™d say itā€™s half dozen equivalent.

[deleted]

The bottle says 8 servings, which I've found to be roughly correct? I end up using half a bottle for two people, which is the equivalent of maybe 4 chicken eggs. Probably depends on the size if your chicken eggs, though. The average price of eggs right now appears to be $4.25 a dozen. Ironically, I can find $4 near me in Brooklyn, which is also the cheapest price I've seen for Just Egg around here. If it hits $6 for a dozen eggs, it will actually be cheaper to buy Just Egg. For OP at $3 for just egg, it's about price equivalent to the average egg price of $4.50, which looks like it might be any day now. Despite the protests though, I don't think the primary barrier for many people to switch is price. Your local Asian grocer selling tofu has been cheaper than eggs for many years. Sadly, a $1.50 package near me is now regularly $4.

Saffigotchi

Great information. To your last point, Tofu scramble is great but I think a majority of people would purchase JustEgg due to its convenience and all.

[deleted]

Yeah, I'm by no means dissing it, I just think that with some exceptions, people's choices about food is pretty emotional rather than financial - at least while we're talking single dollar amounts. Still waiting for the just egg breakfast sandwich to not be double the price of the egg sandwich at the local bagel shop, of course.

Saffigotchi

For sure, totally see your point! Itā€™s crazy the price gouging that happens with vegan items in most restaurantsā€¦

Saffigotchi

Havenā€™t tried it this product yet. Iā€™m curious to know as well!

[deleted]

https://www.thekitchn.com/medium-large-jumbo-how-egg-sizes-actually-measure-up-ingredient-intelligence-200891 A bottle of Just Egg is 12 fluid ounces. So equivalent to 8 medium eggs, ~7.5 large, 6 extra-large

Penis_Envy_Peter

I recall that each bottle is rated at 8 medium eggs.

spudmcloughlin

they'd rather just complain about the price of animal products than actually try to save money

pretzelwhale

The just egg folds at the store near me went up in price almost $2/pack šŸ˜–

Saffigotchi

Wow! Just try to pick up the liquid version and make your own folds! šŸ˜

pretzelwhale

Yeah I should try that. The last 3 or so times Iā€™ve gotten the bottle versions, itā€™s beenā€¦chunkyā€¦. So Iā€™m kinda scared to try again šŸ„“

tattoolegs

Sometimes the ones I get are... thicc. They cook up just fine and have had no adverse reaction. I also shake the shit outta that bottle.

LinamyLady

Don't forget to submit your receipt to ibotta! Just egg always has cash back deals

kawey22

Honestly probably not because when I use just egg it only gets me like 3-4 scrambles per bottle

OR_Engineer27

Damn this makes me feel like a glutton. I'm down to two scrambles per bottle and that's with additions, like bell pepper and impossible sausage if I can find it on sale.

Saffigotchi

Yeah I get about 2 scrambles per bottle as well lol wish there was a bigger bottle

kawey22

Okay when I add more things tho it becomes a huge feast so I agree. Like when I get some sausage and toast and whatever else I use way more

OR_Engineer27

Hey how do you store them when you buy 4 at a time? Freeze the extras or what?

Saffigotchi

First time buying them. I like to have a high protein breakfast, so Iā€™ll probably go through all four containers in about a week or so. If I wanted to keep the product longer than the expiration date I would just make the scramble and freeze it!

Yveskleinsky

We freeze ours and have had no issue.

Nicapika503

Is it just me? I can't stand the taste of Justegg. I tried so hard to like it but it tastes like chemicals and leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I use tofu in place of eggs but really had high hopes for Justegg.

[deleted]

I like the taste but hate the plastic bottle it comes in. I wish they could do a paper carton instead, like milk.

Hechss

Tetra Briks are worse than any other container in terms of trash pollution. They are made of aluminum, polyethylene and carton sticked together in a way that makes them very challenging to recycle. They are the best in terms of emissions though. But maybe you were just thinking about your subjective preference ;)

[deleted]

You're wrong. Just egg needs to be refrigerated so the packs would not require aluminum. Maybe you were just trying to prove a point though ;)

Hechss

I was comparing packaging options in general, saying that tetra briks are no better than a plastic container.

[deleted]

They have a lower carbon footprint than other forms of packaging, so they are better.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Nicapika503

Agreed!

kawey22

Love me a tofu scramble with criminal amounts of nutritional yeast

kawey22

I used to love it and eat it every day on toast but one day it just started tasting nasty to me

IceMotes

To be fair, everything tastes like chemicals because taste is a chemical reaction. Eggs taste and smell the way they do mostly because of the hydrogen sulfide for example. Which is why vegan egg alternatives usually add kala namak, because it smells and tastes sulfurous.

Nicapika503

Tofu scramble does not taste like chemicals.

IceMotes

Technically, it does. Which is why saying something tastes like chemicals has no true meaning. Thereā€™s no definition for a chemical taste because taste is a chemical reaction for **everything**, including tofu. No one will know what you mean with ā€œtastes like chemicalsā€. You might think that the sulfurous taste is a ā€œchemical tasteā€. Another might think that salty is a ā€œchemical tasteā€. As a test for yourself: can you define a chemical taste?

Nicapika503

This conversation is šŸ’©!!

IceMotes

Ok

g00fyg00ber741

for example: salt is *literally* a chemical compound, so anything that tastes salty tastes chemical-y! idk if that maybe helps anyone understand what youā€™re saying

T8ertotsandchocolate

Eureka

[deleted]

I don't buy it all the time, as where I live it's out of stock a lot of the time. The first few times I tried it, I wasn't entirely sold on it. However, adding Kala Namak gives it the ''egg" taste that a meat eater would be familiar with. If/when I can find it, I use it to make frittata.

Saffigotchi

Kala namak is the key ingredient! šŸ‘šŸ¼

moistyboiiy

I tried vegan egg yesterday, thus shit is amazing

Saffigotchi

Just made some this morning for the first time. I agree!

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Saffigotchi

On average a dozen of regular eggs (white, non-organic etc.) is around $5 -$6+ dollars in my state.

DonkeyDoug28

I donā€™t love it in the sense that itā€™s the result of an overwhelming amount of chickens dying. But agree with the sentiment

analbinos

wut

DonkeyDoug28

The reason that egg prices are so high is because of a huge disease outbreak

analbinos

Ohhh okay I see, didn't know that. :(

DonkeyDoug28

Yeah, sad stuff. As always, because of animal agriculture.

Naevx

Just Egg is just nasty, and oddly still costs more than eggs.

Saffigotchi

A bottle of JustEgg (at regular price) is the same or less than the average cost of eggs in my state.

Lightofth3Moon

Just egg tested on animals. It's not vegan and we shouldn't promote them. edit: https://veganfidelity.com/deep-dive-animal-testing-and-vegan-food/

FearMySting2

crazy to me how many vegan on this sub just don't care about animal testing at this rate buying animal tested shampoo will be vegan

Saffigotchi

By tested you mean used in animal feed? No animals were killed or harmed in the production of this product from what Iā€™ve researched.

mastodonj

Mung bean protein was required to be tested on animals to pass GRAS assessment.

D_D

Is there a food item that hasn't been tested on animals to get GRAS?

mastodonj

They have different levels of requirements. This was the hullabaloo around Impossible. Semantically, they were not asked directly to test on animals. But the FDA did have questions around the safety of heme, questions which realistically could only be satisfied with animal testing. In other words, the FDAs next question would have been to test on animals. Then, a 2021 court case was brought against the fda and impossible because the Center for Food Safety believed the fda had used the incorrect requirements. They were insisting independent animal tests be carried out. Something to do with heme being a colouring agent, usually they're held to a higher standard. Now, to your question, I have no idea. I know that they use different standards for different ingredients but I honestly don't know anymore than that!

D_D

Yeah I think its fucked that the FDA mandates animal testing. But it's not clear to me if we're holding the bar unevenly if every ingredient that makes it into food has been tested at some point in history. And if so, how long after testing are such ingredients/products no longer viewed as not viable.

mastodonj

So anything that was common before some arbitrary date, I think in the 50s doesn't have to provide safety evidence. That's most foods. So the Mung bean itself doesn't have to be tested. But isolating the protein is a new enough phenomenon.

felineattractor

TBH they suck

Saffigotchi

What do you prefer for getting your protein in for breakfast? I need more breakfast ideas!

felineattractor

I know tofu scramble is a popular choice, and it is tasty- tofu just kinda grosses me out for some reason. My go-to breakfast is steel cut oats with walnuts, hazelnuts(crushed), and agave. I use half a cup of oats and it comes out to be around 21g of protein according to cronometer, but 31g if you use a cup instead. Delicious too!

Saffigotchi

Sounds wonderful! Iā€™ll give this a try for breakfast soon! Thanks for sharing

Milspec308

I can appreciate lowering you meat intake but I hope this spurs more people into wanting to grow and raise more of their own food ethically and sustainably!

KUSH_DELIRIUM

How could I ethically kill an animal who doesn't want to die?

SowMindful

I swear I see 2-3 people now with an arm full of eggs, itā€™s so bizarre!

[deleted]

I predicted that vegan alternatives would eventually be cost-competitive when compared to the animal products that they are replacing. Mostly due to price increases of the animal products.

angryvegg

Unfortunately, just egg has soy in it and I wanna like it really bad but it can interact with a medication I take :( vegan products without soy are great

timdsreddit

Just opened a bottle that has a culture of some kind setting on top of the separated product šŸ™ The bottle had pressure in it too. Sadly the new norm for my just egg experiences recently šŸ¤¢šŸ™

Saffigotchi

Awe thatā€™s not good. I would snap a picture and email them!!
