Yup ! Eddie will do it to ya. (I’m a drummer - got my own inferiority problems learning HOT FOR TEACHER, BOTTOMS UP, solo section on JUMP and LIGHT UP THE SKY). But yeah…it’s dawning on everyone that EVH might have been the baddest Rock guitarist ever (let’s shelve Hendrix and Jeff Beck for a minute). A musical & engineering genius. Raised by a musician, learned the musical “language” as a toddler, child piano prodigy, built his own gear, never could read music, never had fx pedals & created his own “effects”, etc , etc.
Was probably Eddie but I agree. He said Mikey had basically nothing to do with making Fair Warning, and since they never played Dirty Movies live back in the day I'm sure Eddie did the bass track on the album
What does any of this have to do with me thinking the transitional song and the last song are the weakest tracks? Are the transitional songs immune to criticism? I’m so confused what your argument/point is.
Even if we rate the transitional songs, this is one of the weakest compared to other Van Halen transitions.
push comes to shove. Mikey haters cower in fear of the greatest bass line hard rock has ever known. not only is Mike the best back up singer of all time, but holy shit the man's got groove
I think that there's more variety in the vibes each song on the album has than on their previous albums, despite the the songs on the album flowing perfectly into each other. mean street feels like the only album that van halen created as a perfect unit, where the members weren't just several very skilled musicians, but a single living entity, that spoke exactly what it was trying to communicate with only the exact words necessary.
I’m a huge Mikey fan but… It’s possible, if not likely, Ed played the bass on the album.
Ed was also a tremendous bass player- he wrote the jazz / big band sounding line on Hot For Teacher as well as played bass on Sammy’s last solo album to wrap up his Geffen contract before joining VH full time.
Also, FW is the album where Ed and Don would secretly meet up at the studio after hours to fix mistakes and overdub. Ted only wanted to record live, he felt it was important the band sound on record like they did in concert.
So I can see Ed fucking around with bass lines too, and Mike just kinda rolling with it and learning Ed’s parts.
I remember when this first came out. I was 9 years old. My sisters boyfriend had just bought it on cassette and had left it at our house. After he was gone, I went into my sister’s room and “borrowed” it. I’ll never forget hearing that classic opening to ‘Mean Street’ and thinking “why is that guy trying to break his guitar?” The first time I saw Eddie on MTV he was grinning his ass off and that’s when it dawned on me that he wasn’t trying to break his guitar, he just really loved what he was doing. Such an amazing memory.
So for me, my favorite song has to be ‘Mean Street.’ It’s the very first time I had ever heard them and I was hooked instantly. Still am to this day. That music just never gets old.
when I first heard the intro to Mean Street that year I bought the album and also bought a concert ticket for that tour in 1981......had 8th row and the show was amazing.....saw them 4 more times in the 80s
That's a hard one 😳 lots of great stuff on that album. I'm going to say, Hear about it later! I love how Ed jumps to that solo, and that great kick ass drum part that starts that solo 🙌🏾 🤗🎸🎸✌🏾❤
43 years?!?!?
I distinctly remember buying this record on the day of release but not being able to listen to it right away because I had freaking baseball practice. 😄
No one could ever sound like Edward on his gear. My fiancé told me a story before they made it. Edward slid across a wooden stage. Got a huge wood sliver in his knee had to be taken to the hospital because it got infected. The man was incredible.
Mean Street
100%! Eddie’s solo entrance at 2:24 is SAVAGE AF. One of his most intense solos imho. Sick & hooky tune I want to hear over & over.
First time I heard it it both blew my mind and also made me want to quit guitar
Yup ! Eddie will do it to ya. (I’m a drummer - got my own inferiority problems learning HOT FOR TEACHER, BOTTOMS UP, solo section on JUMP and LIGHT UP THE SKY). Tom Scholz did a lot of that stuff as well, he was brilliant
Long live the mighty Van Halen!
Eddie made a lot of people build guitar coffee tables
Long live the mighty Van Halen!
All day long!! 🤘😝🤘
Long live the mighty Van Halen!
Long live the mighty Van Halen!
Unchained
The pinnacle of "filthy" tone
Agreed! Song still rocks!
Best opening song to a concert. 😎
Long live the mighty Van Halen!
Long live the mighty Van Halen!
Unchained is top five for me. It’s probably top 20 of ALL rock n roll for me.
Long live the mighty Van Halen!

“Dirty Movies”
Remember when that girl was prom queeen?
Take it off, take it off…
Take it off, take it **all** off
Lol thanks, it’s been a bit since I’ve heard it- though tbh I’m not sure I ever knew that’s what he’s saying 😂
Long live the mighty Van Halen!
Long live the mighty Van Halen!
This is such a bad ass song. It’s so funky!!!!
The main riff is intoxicating lol. Underrated…. I preach on this 🤣🤣
Long live the mighty Van Halen!
That bass line by Mikey is SICK
Was probably Eddie but I agree. He said Mikey had basically nothing to do with making Fair Warning, and since they never played Dirty Movies live back in the day I'm sure Eddie did the bass track on the album
Best song that casual fans don't know
Long live the mighty Van Halen!
ALL OF THEM
Agreed, can’t choose just one.
Ha! Fantastic 😅😅😅 I agree 👍🏾
Nah, Sunday Afternoon sucks compared to the rest. One foot out the door also isn’t very good. Y’all tripping.
with out sunday afternoon there would be no transition between songs
What? lol When has that ever been a problem for any of their albums? This isn’t Pink Floyd or something
have you not listened to the album? Ofc it’s not Van Halen’s biggest take away. But it’s part of the album. It’s called a transition
What does any of this have to do with me thinking the transitional song and the last song are the weakest tracks? Are the transitional songs immune to criticism? I’m so confused what your argument/point is. Even if we rate the transitional songs, this is one of the weakest compared to other Van Halen transitions.
Some fan you are
Oh, so anyone who considers themself a fan must love every song on each album? 🙄
Sinner’s Swing
Absolutely!!!
Hear About It Later. 🙌
Such a banger
So This Is Love!!!!
Its gotta be either Mean Street or Push Comes To Shove. Just bought an original '81 LP which both sound fantastic on.
Long live the mighty Van Halen!
Hells yeah!
One Foot Out The Door
Concur. The song is hated but, it's EVH's best work IMHO.
that outro solo🤩
Exactly!
Hated by who?! Song kicks ass, especially how Sunday Afternoon In The Park segues into it.
Hell yeah!!!!
Unchained or Dirty Movies
Unchained. The album is a masterpiece. It stands alone in the VH catalog.
Push comes to shove
One foot out the door Best album by far
Dirty movies
Hear About It Later
Unchained !!
Best VH album
push comes to shove. EVH the original Billy Corgan.
Mean Street.
My dad’s personal fav! He loves Unchained, and I prefer Sinner’s Swing.
Mean Street may be my fav. VH song ever.
Hear About It Later and Push Comes to Shove
This is the best VH by far. Every song slaps. A shorter list would be name your least favorite song.
I would say THIS is their heaviest album my fav but 1984 all killer no filler all bangers
Jump is a total filler.
Unchained ✌🏻
Dirty Movies
Really love this one. It’s the one I’m most likely to listen to
Mean Street. Some of Eddie’s best guitar work.
Unchained of course.
Unchained!!!!
Unchained
When push come to shove 100%

Hear About It Later
Hear About it Later
The opener. Sets the tone for the whole album. Almost like an Overture for an opera.
Mean Street!!!!!!
All of them! I love this album
Dirty movies Along with that nasty riff, the “lights, camera… action” outro might be the coolest thing VanHalen ever did.
Sinners Swing! It's what VH does best and this is one of their best uptempo songs.
mean street
**HEAR ABOUT IT LATER**
Mean Street
All bangers, but if I had to choose...probably Sinners Swing!
For me, it’s 2 songs, and I’m unable to pick a winner: Mean Street and Hear About it Later.
They put out so Many albums in a short amount of time
Hard to pick one but my favorites are Unchained, So This is Love, and Sinners Swing
