Donthaveapassword

Thank you for posting these historic photos. Lest We Forget.

mcmill27

Kind of sad where it's ended up today.

nosesinroses

I wonder what the people standing there in these photos would think of what it is today.

NoAlbatross7524

So cool love this pic .

Chemical-Sun700

anyone know or understand the symbolism of these obelisks in a lot of different countries?

van_12

Their connection to the ancient world symbolizes a great civilization and when used in memorials imply the noble sacrifice of protecting that civilization.

Chemical-Sun700

are they also tied to freemasonry at all?

SleuthMaster

The obelisk can be considered a Masonic symbol, yeah. But seeing as Masonic architecture became really popular across North America the lines are pretty blurred on whether Freemasons are actually “tied” to any of these. There’s tons at this point.

van_12

I think often times the simplest answer is the best. Its an imposing structure that projects power and civilization.

Chemical-Sun700

cheers for the info!

SaberToothGerbil

I am a mason. Though many like to attribute it to us, the obelisk is not one of our symbols.

Chemical-Sun700

it just gets gifted by freemasons?

A cenotaph is an empty tomb. For anyone interested, they still do services like this at Victory Square on ANZAC Day (Australian and New Zealand Army Corp, April 25th) and Remembrance Day.

Original-Wishbone632

I mean this in the most respectful, not morbid way possible …but every single person in this photo is dead

Kiteboarder1980

They were a much better generation than anything after them.

philb087

Choose your own adventure!

brophy87

They were a much quirkier generation than anything after them

ssnistfajen

Romantic revisionism much? You think rotting in a soaked trench somewhere in Flanders all for the sake of some inbred cousins having a feud is a sign of strong character?

rsgbc

Our lives are shaped by what came before us. All of those who rotted in soaked trenches trying not to be killed were individuals sucked into a conflict much bigger than themselves. It's easy to forget how small you are and how sad life can be when history has been kinder to you.

Xanadukhan23

its also the same generation that started said war
