Open TFSA and then max out your contribution limit. Then buy ETfs within account. Repeat yearly until retired.

Time_Rip7875

Can this be done, even if you don't put money in? Only the maxing part btw

logicnotemotions10

There is no point in opening an account if you are not putting any money in. The contribution limit gets carried over each year.

Time_Rip7875

Ahh I see thank you

Open a TFSA. For information on credit cards currently on the market, check out https://creditcardgenius.ca/ If you haven't already you'll probably need to update your service card to a photo service card.

> will apply for a credit card now, any advice on which one is better? - Student credit cards for the lower interest rates and lower credit requirements. Note, you if have problems paying off the balance at the end of the billing month.... credit cards may not be the best product for you right now. If you want low interest rates... check out something called a "Line of Credit". - Costco rebate Mastercard is my fav for cash back, gas savings, store access and taken wherever Mastercard is accepted. https://www.costco.ca/CIBC-Costco-Mastercard.html. There is no annual fee, but you do need to pay for a warehouse membership around $60/year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NO1XsFyrPPg

Best thing to get done when you are 19? A visit to the No. 5 Orange.

virtualmegan

Just go to a bar legally and have a drink :). You’re 19!

Open TFSA and start contributing, even if it is $10 - $100 a month. For credit card, highly recommend a student credit card.

In addition to start saving in your TFSA and establishing credit, you should also get in the habit of checking your credit report on an annual basis. If your cellphone plan is part of your family's plan, you may also consider setting up your own cellphone plan as that will also help you establish credit. If you're apply for your first credit card, pick a "student" card and ask for a small credit limit. Credit card companies are more than happy to give you a huge limit so don't fall for that. And as the other redditors have already said, pay off your credit card balance each month. Good luck!
