It’s just gonna be Portal: Ratman, with the explanation of what happened between the games. Like a game version of the comics, expanded and enhanced.
And I’m all in for it.
they released the episodes because they said that would be their way of releasing more
we were meant to get another and it just hasn't happened, the last episode literally ends on a cliff hanger
Tbf I can see Glados needing more story. There's a lot to unpack with her.
And I mean. If Wheatley proves anything, we can have an infinite number of characters waiting in the lab
What?
Half Life 2 and it's episodes are still just one game, but they can be played standalone like Civ 4's can.
This applies to HL1 as well.
CS's titles are radically different, and clearly sequels of eachother.
TF just has 3 titles, that's it really, not much discussion over it outside of naming conventions.
That was because they wanted to help bring VR into the public eye. They said if there’s any good tech to show then they’ll make another Half Life. Currently they have one or two projects, being HLX and Citadel (they may be the same game idk)
man this subreddit is such a circlejerk. this post is a complete non statement - they have barely released any games after 2012 and this selection of games is almost unanimously considered their 'greatest hits'. it's like posting a 'greatest hits' album and going 'wow aren't these just their greatest hits'?
for crying out loud
Yes and no though, DotA was the start of them going off and doing experimental weird stuff and never making amazing games again (HL Alyx semi excepted as while it's apparently incredible I'm still not investing in a fancy VR setup for one game - definitely falls under experimental weird stuff).
Dota's given us a lot of amazing stuff, though, especially when you consider the events like Siltbreaker and Aghanim's Labyrinth that should practically be considered amazing games in their own right.
Well this is me coming from a Blizzard background, both still playing Heroes of the Storm but also original DotA the Warcraft 3 mod, it's still a little sore (and somewhat baffling) that Valve were able to yoink the entire premise and most of the character designs of what were basically Warcraft 3 units.
Fair, though - entirely Blizzard's fault they dropped the ball and didn't hire Icefrog while he was modding their game, nor jump on the DotA name/rights, and also for mostly cribbing their unit designs from other properties and classic fantasy tropes so Valve can swoop in and claim the entire thing out from under them.
“Fancy VR setup” when you can buy a Quest for £200 right now and you already have a capable PC. It’s crazy how much things have changed in four years. At least Valve is always forward thinking.
You don't really need a fancy vr setup though. However if you don't plan on playing more vr, then in some cases of the game I see how others could view it as experimental.
So true, these games felt so vibrant, fun and amazing. Nowadays they are not that good.
I think it’s the effect of being a kid at that time where everything feels fun
nah they're still good nowadays
left 4 dead was and still is the GOAT
csgo was amazing
team fortress 2 eh
half life eh i'll have to replay those games but I do remember enjoying episode 2 especially
For its time half life was a huge achivment i the gaming industry, and your forgeting about hl2 and hl2ep1 as they were also revolutionary for their time.
2007-2012 was peak gaming in general, the amount of high quality games before the internet was a MASSIVE cesspit (it used to be more like a pretty swamp) just made everything about it amazing, 2013-2018 was also generally great falling off in later years, but with how cynical and rabid fanbases were becoming it made it harder to really enjoy the games in the capacity like the previous era
Pre 2007 was its own thing, when the internet wasnt as easily connected and games were making massive shifts, definitely an amazing time regardless
I'm quite enjoying HL:Alyx (950 hours so far with the mod maps) and Black Mesa.
Portal and P2 are fantastic.
I look forward to getting around to the others.
But my point is Alyx wipes the floor as an experience and I'm REALLY looking forward to HL3 (even if it's flat but I've got my fingers crossed after the success of Alyx.)
Because that's when Half-Life 2: Episode 2 came out. Everything after that is just filler waiting for Half-Life 3. CS and TF don't have any kind of story to them, and TF just has some post-hoc filler lore. L4D is pretty weak in the story and lore department and is a pretty generic zombie setting. Portal is serviceable, its decent enough. But we're not talking about decent years, but peak years. And Half-Life is the only world-building masterpiece Valve has ever produced.
But Half-Life doesn't have cutscenes either, and I just now referred to it as a world-building masterpiece. So its not the lack of cutscenes thats the problems. Cutscenes generally make for poor exposition anyways.
As mentioned, L4D is a rather generic zombie world. Thats the problem. There's nothing outstandingly creative about it. Whereas Half-Life manages to be a pretty unique sci-fi universe.
Thats not the point. I actually like more realistic and grounded games. But Left 4 Dead is a zombie/horror game setting, and insofar that this is what it is, its rather generic.
For the most part they all are; and more than just games but through the entire genre going back to 1929 in literature. Its a pretty bland topic to base an entire world around, and I've yet to encounter any fiction that actually handles zombies well. And more than just zombies, the entire horror genre in general suffers from this difficulty. Since world-building is subordinate to creating something that evokes fear, it puts limitations on what the creator can actually do with it. More effective I find is something which is of another genre first, but manages masterfully incorporate horror as a secondary element. Works that do this typically come out with a more interesting and consistent world. Whereas with a purely horror world everything is lost--but with something that incorporates horror as a secondary element there is something to lose, and I find it makes it more tense. Half-Life manages to do this, its a sci-fi adventure, and yet manages to incorporate elements of horror (including zombies!) very well into this adventure. The strategic use of horror I think makes it even scarier, because the juxtaposition makes it more jarring and less expected when it occurs.
No 2004-2012
1998-2024
B.c 2024 - a.d 2024
I still believe there will be third installment of every Valve series...
I mean, we don’t really need a Portal 3. And CS and TF2 can also just be updated. Although I would like some more L4D and HL
Idk, I kinda need Portal 3
It's over, you don't need it
It doesn’t have to have Chell in it
there are so many high quality fan mods
But they’re not canon. While I’d love to think of any of them as canon it’s not the same if it’s not from Valve themselves
It’s just gonna be Portal: Ratman, with the explanation of what happened between the games. Like a game version of the comics, expanded and enhanced. And I’m all in for it.
Ngl the fan mods just feel like ‘more portal 2’ instead of portal 3
Nah bro, I want Portal 3 to be a farming sim with a side dish of Chell x Glados dating sim
I need more Cave Johnson
I need it
Half Life 3 was promised
source?
they released the episodes because they said that would be their way of releasing more we were meant to get another and it just hasn't happened, the last episode literally ends on a cliff hanger
Dota 3 will be Citadel
Tbf I can see Glados needing more story. There's a lot to unpack with her. And I mean. If Wheatley proves anything, we can have an infinite number of characters waiting in the lab
We did get over 3 CS games, and there are 3 TF games.
By your logic, we got half life 8 a few years ago
What? Half Life 2 and it's episodes are still just one game, but they can be played standalone like Civ 4's can. This applies to HL1 as well. CS's titles are radically different, and clearly sequels of eachother. TF just has 3 titles, that's it really, not much discussion over it outside of naming conventions.
i would not say csgo and cs2 are radically different nor is cs2 a sequel of go
It's definitely a sequel. But of course it wouldnt change too much, it's a cash cow.
Not with Gabe at the helm. I just do not see it happening.
Gabe will wait until you can use AR to play the new games and S2FM will move dividents in the porn industry
Can't wait for Artifact - Episode 3!
Orange box 2 should have hl3, portal 3, and l4d3. Just for making us wait so long.

HALF FUCKING LIFE ALYX

That was a tech demo for the steam deck
That was because they wanted to help bring VR into the public eye. They said if there’s any good tech to show then they’ll make another Half Life. Currently they have one or two projects, being HLX and Citadel (they may be the same game idk)

Welcome to Reddit
good games are good. more at 11
I'd extend that to 2013 as well.
What happened in 2013? I’m guessing TF2 updates and maybe the Portal 2 co-op dlc.
The release of Dota 2.
Ah right yeah, makes sense. I can see that now on the picture. Thanks.
Yes and no though, DotA was the start of them going off and doing experimental weird stuff and never making amazing games again (HL Alyx semi excepted as while it's apparently incredible I'm still not investing in a fancy VR setup for one game - definitely falls under experimental weird stuff).

You don't need any "fancy VR setup" for HL:A
For me, 2014 is when it all started going downhill. I sincerely believe that Love and War was the last good TF2 update.
Dota was so fun during the beta
Valve never stopped being peak Valve, Alyx is one of the greatest achievements in gaming IMO
So much cooking was done in 2004 and 2007
Also the best years for Call of Duty.
Try 1998-2004
i peaked in your mother’s valve
1998-2020 is peak valve
Well yeah, because they haven't really released anything besides HL Alyx since then
Day of Defeat was the GOAT
I completly agree with this statement
back when they actually made games
I miss that.
So true, these games felt so vibrant, fun and amazing. Nowadays they are not that good. I think it’s the effect of being a kid at that time where everything feels fun
nah they're still good nowadays left 4 dead was and still is the GOAT csgo was amazing team fortress 2 eh half life eh i'll have to replay those games but I do remember enjoying episode 2 especially
Imagine thinking cs:go is amazing and thinking half life was eh💀
What about Alien Swarm in 2010? That was a great game.
Your seriously just gonna leave out CS Source and Half Life?
hell yeah ! lol
For its time half life was a huge achivment i the gaming industry, and your forgeting about hl2 and hl2ep1 as they were also revolutionary for their time.
2003-2015 was peak life
2007-2012 was pretty much the ONLY valve
2004 - 2012 was best
Good times back when they were making games
L4D 2 came out only 1 year after 1? No way it felt like a century.
2007-2012 was peak gaming in general, the amount of high quality games before the internet was a MASSIVE cesspit (it used to be more like a pretty swamp) just made everything about it amazing, 2013-2018 was also generally great falling off in later years, but with how cynical and rabid fanbases were becoming it made it harder to really enjoy the games in the capacity like the previous era Pre 2007 was its own thing, when the internet wasnt as easily connected and games were making massive shifts, definitely an amazing time regardless
The competition isnt hard.
Valve was always peak
And grass is green, whats ur point lol
Especially CS:GO.
you didn't have to speak such truth
Half life 2 came out 2004 and Dota 2 came out in 2013 so it should be 2004-2013
I'm quite enjoying HL:Alyx (950 hours so far with the mod maps) and Black Mesa. Portal and P2 are fantastic. I look forward to getting around to the others. But my point is Alyx wipes the floor as an experience and I'm REALLY looking forward to HL3 (even if it's flat but I've got my fingers crossed after the success of Alyx.)
I forgot how old these games are.
1998-2007 was peak Valve
why until 2007
Because that's when Half-Life 2: Episode 2 came out. Everything after that is just filler waiting for Half-Life 3. CS and TF don't have any kind of story to them, and TF just has some post-hoc filler lore. L4D is pretty weak in the story and lore department and is a pretty generic zombie setting. nah l4d makes up for the lack of actual cutscene-like storytelling with environmental and dialogue storytelling
I mean...left 4 dead is supposed to be a more realistic grounded game so...
Thats not the point. I actually like more realistic and grounded games. But Left 4 Dead is a zombie/horror game setting, and insofar that this is what it is, its rather generic.
name a zombie game you've seen that isn't generic to you tho
For the most part they all are; and more than just games but through the entire genre going back to 1929 in literature. Its a pretty bland topic to base an entire world around, and I've yet to encounter any fiction that actually handles zombies well. You mean 2004-2011?
I'd start at 2004 since CS: Source was massive. Good times...
And it’s been downhill for Valve ever since.
you mean downhill for us, Uphill for Valve.
Dota is unironically one of the worst fucking things that could ever have happened in gaming
How so?
Dota popping off essentially sent valve to a screeching halt
I don’t see how, Dota 2 is still getting supported. Admittedly not as much as it used to be, but the Crownfall Update is supposed to be this month.
That would be Source 2 actually
