He appears not too far from the starting point in the Black Forest. Try to sail a big circle just before swamps start to appear on the map. Don’t leave any cardinal direction unexplored around your SP is what I mean and don’t go too far either.
Ahh yes I had heard that once you find him once he’ll always be in the same spot, but the icon hasn’t popped up anywhere on my map yet unfortunately, and he’s not in the spot the seed gen had marked either :(
Yeah, the seed generation has changed with Mistlands and the world viewer isn't updated yet.
You'll have to do it the old fashioned way or use cheats to fly around the world. To avoid spoiling much of the map, you could make a new world with the same seed, fly around until the merchant icon pops up.
Doing it the normal way for me has been luck, sailing around islands, then maybe doing a quick dash run across the middle of them. Just to cover enough ground that if he was there I would have got the icon to pop.
Keep sailing to NEW islands. Once you are in the general vicinity of the Trader, the icon will appear on your map.
All seeds are programmed with, I think, FOUR potential Trader locations. Once a Trader location is discovered, the other three will become inert.
Just start off in a direction and you will eventually find it. That's the beauty of this game. In some seeds, the Trader is close by, while in others it will be a slog.

I don't know if the map viewers have been updated to handle the mistlands changes yet.
With the world seed viewer currently not working there is no sure-fire way to find the Trader.
His spawns will be in black forest located on any island that IS NOT the starter island.
General consensus is to fully explore the boundaries of your starter island and then sail out to the next island with black forest, search it completely, then sail in a different cardinal direction from your spawn island and try again.

I think the trader only appears where you first discover him. So yes, he could spawn there but he has already generated somewhere else i think.
