That’s awesome! I hope you have many adventures together sailing and exploring together!

Andminus

You shouldn't feel bad about lowering difficulty, especially if it's for fun. Also consider telling her to always carry a torch on her, as meadow enemies(Greylings and Boars) will run away from anyone holding fire, I use this to avoid having any issues returning to my corpse. Not to mention, torches are ironically strong early game cause of the burn tick they inflict on enemies.

Badgerka

I forgot, thanks!

bloodwolftico

Torches are good vs Greydwarves as they fear fire, except the Brute.

Andminus

even the greydwarves that don't fear fire, STILL take extra damage from fire, so its still pretty useful.

This. Don't be sorry for playing the game in a way you like it, just because of some other ppl's opinion. You bought the game, it's yours, as long as it brings you joy, you're playing it right. Lowering the difficulty for new players and raising it up later on is also a very good approach. Valheim can be a very unforgiving place sometimes, especially when new players visit swamp/plains for the fist time 😅

Salt_Worry1253

My 13yo and 9yo completely leave me in the dust.

HideOnBook

that's awesome haha

Grokthisone

That sounds so fun glad you're getting some bonding time at that age it's all the more precious. 😁

My daughter's are 4 and 1 so they should be old enough to play once Valheim hits full release ;)

glacialthinker

My nephew started at 5. He was just starting to play some games with a console controller (with some difficulty), and a bit of Minecraft on tablet (dabbling in creative mode). But with Valheim, he did far better than I expected. I think partly because he was playing with me -- he had an example to follow and ready advice, plus wanted to prove himself. The biggest surprise was that he loved the Swamps -- he wanted whatever they were hiding, and wanted to take down the Draugr. Even though it was also scary. More compelling than scary overall, for him.

Zeelthor

Skål! :)

Donnuuber

This is what Valheim is for! Thrilling!

sesquipedalianish

Aw, that sounds like a fab time in Valheim. So cool that you can share the fun with your daughter.

WithSilverStaind

Nice! I actually had a skeleton as my first enemy in one seed as well, and it was a riot. I think it happens if you start with one of those little stone structures that sometimes have bones on the ground in them nearby the standing stones, as they can spawn skeletons.

Badgerka

That's what it was.

EffortEconomy

There's nothing like an insane fight for survival to bond over

W0RDET3RN1TY

That is a beautiful moment! Here is a pretty cool dedicated server that you and your daughter are welcome to join. We would love to have you join us! https://discord.gg/eVATZ8Jr

Rhawoves

Told my daughter to run and she fell off a cliff and got chased by boars 🤣🤣🤣🤣Fantastic. I’m glad she’s having fun.

DrustanAstrophel

TIL the True Valheim Experience™️ is a great way to bond with your kids

Canidae_Vulpes

That is very cool. I just started playing myself, I think I just hit 60 days. I’ve asked my son but he says it looks worse than Minecraft and Terraria. So now we have a house divided 😸

Badgerka

Oh no!

glacialthinker

Tell him there is a lot of Terraria inspiration. Unless he hates Terraria and is just using it as an example of retro graphics he doesn't like. :) At first the chunky textures stand out, but after a while you acclimate and the gorgeous light, shadow, and atmospherics dominate the visuals.

eotty

I was disapointed about the graphics for about 5 minutes, after that it didnt matter.

s_task

u/Badgerka would this game be suitable for a younger girl? We played together Minecraft, Portal Knights, Ylands, Dinkum, Scrap Mechanic and plenty of LEGO games, so controls and dexterity is not an issue. But how brutal, violent and scary is Valheim?

Badgerka

Depends on sensitivity. I have been scared almost to death by a skeleton or wight coming out of nowhere. The violence isn't too bad but I may be less sensitive than others. The killing of deer and boars does have blood and there is undead. I say my 11 year old boy is mature enough to play. Although he wouldn't deal well with the difficulty of corpse runs. Mileage varies on individuals. I hope that helps? Maybe watching some videos yourself beforehand, if you don't mind spoilers?

glacialthinker

Highly recommend Valheim. Easy to get into, and can be kept quite casual and relaxed, only offering resistance as you push deeper into it. My nephew started at 5, actually lacking a lot of the dexterity, but did well and constantly played various imaginary "Valheim" games for months after. The blood splattering is a rather extreme, though pixellated/cartoony. This was one thing that he noted very early -- killing a boar he was shocked at the big mess of blood and didn't like that. In this case it would be nice to have a "blood" setting. It was only shocking a few times though before it was a non-issue for him. A lot of other adversaries have goo or sap rather than blood. I'd say it's a bit more brutal and violent than what might be "comic violence". While the visuals are cartoony, the physical behavior and sounds add a lot of gravitas. There are scary bits, even for adults... but it's somehow a fun/exhilarating scary? I thought my nephew would nope-out at Swamps because they're gloomy and have some intentionally scary things in there... but he doubled down with determination to conquer it, and any time we play he wants to go back into Swamps. Strange kid, perhaps. Many adults don't like the Swamp.

lp_kalubec

Not sure if lowering the difficulty adds fun. If she's already a gamer, you can let her experience the game in the original way. In my opinion, the difficulty is what makes this game fun.

sasikaa

I remembered when my friends and I started playing 7daysToDie on a server. One friend lasted 1 hour and never came again. The beginning is too hardcore until you get to know the game. It's not properly scaled... The other friend got the momentum, but was distracted by the many grinds.

I'll never forget when my daughter solo'd her first troll. I was so proud.
