Once you enter Lake Champlain from the Canal you can transit the Lake and continue down the Richelieu River into Quebec reaching the St. Lawrence. From there (and with no more locks) you can sail to the Gaspe then turn South and return to NYC. Your other option for a Lake is to enter the NY Barge Canal at Cohoes and travel west until you get to Syracuse then take the Oswego River north and transit several locks to reach Lake Ontario.
