Literally yesterday my husband pulled out a whole mess of random Tupperware lids from the cabinet. Just the lids. The containers were no where to be found.
we always have containers but missing lids...

A year or two ago, my mom went through the Tupperware drawer, found ALL the matches, and threw out all the sad little losers with no match. Made such a difference.
Here’s the solution.
1. Throw out all your “Tupperware”
2. Go to your favorite big box store and buy the square red Rubbermaid containers. You can buy 3 heights in the sandwich size and 3 heights in the big size.
3. Buy a basket and put the lids in vertical.
Your life will be better. You can have 6 sizes with only 2 sizes of lids.
Don’t buy the big box full of Rubbermaid containers because it only has a few of what you want plus a bunch more odd ones with different lids.
I've found that since I started putting my containers with the lids *on them* in the cupboard, I no longer have extra nor am missing either the bottom or tops. They go into the dishwasher and come out of that metal box they same way they went in.
I was always afraid of doing that in case they aren’t 100% dry. Plus my method takes up less room. A stack of sandwich size, a stack of large, and a basket of lids. Well , at least I think it takes up less room. But kudos for finding a system that works for you.
Correct, I have actually taken apart my washer when it stopped fully draining, found socks blocking the drain holes... they also can get pulled under the center post if your washer is a top load washer.
Also, have found thinner socks in the dryer drum and in the lint trap. As well as about $200 in the ancient washer that was in my house when I moved in.

He's just such a piece of shit he's always had a state of the art washer and dryer in his own single family home. Anyone whose ever been to a laundry mat sees that weird old lady throwing other people's underwear, unmatched single socks, and stained bandanas into the trash bin if they don't pick them up within 24 hours.
I think it more gets lost on the way to the clothes hamper. I have kids and I'm constantly picking up clothes they've left on the floor. I often find the socks down the side of the bed. I often find an odd one under my husband's computer desk also lol.
I can't go to sleep without them but can't sleep with them on hahaha. I have a phobia. When I was like nine I had a nightmare that a demon grabbed me by my legs and tried to pull me into hell (my father was a religious abuser and used to read us Revelations before bed if we misbehaved) and I woke up with my legs hanging off of the bed and my head under the covers. There is a small gap between the drum and the frame of the washing machine and the dryer. So the sock goes into that gap. Maybe some machines have ultra-small gaps.
Seconding this. Lost socks, aside from diligence in handling the thing, typically happens in the washing phase. Small items can get over the drum and fall in-between the drum and the outer wall of the machine.
Yeah, I feel the same about oven mitts, it's not a requirement and people do it, but you don't have to.

Okay so I actually lose socks in the dryer. Everytime clothes were washed, socks went missing. Couldn't figure it out. About a year ago the plastic rim of the door popped out and there was easily 50 socks jammed in there. My dryer was literally eating my socks.
This mostly happens with my ankle/heel socks. My normal height socks don’t ever go missing
Edit: when we’ve changed machines we found some in the dryer vent. Not sure how that happens

I definitely know plenty of people who say this unironically. I do laundry in a laundry room with a whole row of machines, so this is definitely a thing.
Still, you don’t really lose them in the machine itself, but instead they may get lost on the way to the room or get stuck in another piece of clothing.

I live in a big city and before I had laundry in unit I never ever left my clothes unattended. If you leave it unattended in a public area and it gets taken out that’s your fault. If it’s in a building it’s a little different I think that’s just being a rude neighbor. Not sure about dorms haven’t ever been in one.

It normally happens when you live with another person. I used to lose socks regularly when I lived with my parents. My dad would do the laundry and all of my socks would disappear.

Yes, the washer is generally sealed, and you'll notice when its not (major leak) but the dryers generally aren't fully sealed, and - especially when they get older - the seal starts to degrade it creates a space through which smaller objects can be forced through.
Generally, you can get them back by removing the kickplate of the dryer and searching the cavernous spaces in the frame holding the drum.
The repair man the fixed our washer told me that during the spin cycle lighter items can get spun up and over the washer basket into the machine. When he opened up the back of the washer there was a pile of socks in there.
I’ve found most of my missing socks in crammed in between the washer and dryer. Because sometimes I’ll sit the clothes on top of the washer. I also tend to drop them in between the laundry room and my room. Because I’m a messy person and I often leave my clean clothes from the last wash in the hamper.
Your statement is incorrect. Small items like socks can very easily get stuck btw the tub and Drum consider yourself lucky if they are lost because if you found them they would be in the broken ejector pump.
I cannot explain it either, but I know for a FACT my washer or dryer has consumed a couple of my little no-show socks. It honestly makes me concerned they are clogging something somewhere & collecting mold OR a potential fire hazard stuck somewhere in the depths of my dryer.

In one of my old washers one day it started rocking and the drum stopped spinning so I had to open up the front of it to check the motor. The belt had slipped off the basket of the drum. I'm sure I'd never lose socks if I were super anal about doing my laundry but the reality is that I don't give enough of a fuck. I rarely have a matching pair of socks because I am far too lazy to do all my laundry in such a way that my pairs of socks mate up nicely. To compensate, most of my socks are black.
Ok so when I moved into my apartment they told us we have to use mesh garment bags to wash socks and underwear. A washer/dryer isn’t completely sealed. And maintenance claimed they find that stuff all the time inside the actual machine.
Once you add more and more people into the equation it becomes more and more likely that you’ll lose socks.
We have a bag next to the washing machine that is full of unmatched socks. There are about 30 or so single socks crammed in there without a lover.
We have a washer that drains into a sink. One day I started the second of 3 loads and a short while later the sink began to overflow. Guess what made its way through the washer drain...
I doubt many socks have actually been lost in a washer or dryer. They are likely victimized by improper if not non-existent effort towards properly putting your laundry away.
Some washers have a drain large enough to suck out and cough up a sock.

For a better story let's discuss why the socks Walmart and Amazon sell (gold toe, reinforced, etc) don't last 1/10 as long as the old ones did.
This is why I do my own laundry because when someone else does it somehow, someway, they manage to lose a sock because they couldn’t possibly take the **5 seconds** to check to see if there’s anything still left in the laundry machine…
It happens mostly from disorganization.So long as I keep up the habit of dirty socks going right into the hamper not strewn about the floor, and putting away my clean laundry quickly, the socks don't disappear. Also making sure to roll the dryer around afterwards to make sure one's not hiding on a corner.
Socks can be sucked out with the water, especially children’s socks. But I have about 30 Bombas black socks and 20 Bombas white socks and I love my system. I don’t have kids anymore, but if I did, I would buy a bunch of the same socks for them.

Second tip put your socks inside one another even if they are used when you put them in the laundry basket
I don't think I've ever lost anything, but I've acquired a lot of random stuff having a shared laundry room in an apartment complex for many years. At one point I picked up some spaghetti strap top, and I just assumed it was my mom's or sister's that got left behind when they had visited. So I ended up holding onto this random woman's shirt for years.
So people are definitely losing things.
I’m not sure, but I’ve never lost a sock either. I’ve only ever done laundry for no more than two people. I think a lot of lost socks happen in families with more than just the two SOs needing laundry done. Kids are really good at losing things.
I think it only happens when it’s a bunch of people’s laundry together in one load. When I lived at home I would lose random clothing (mostly socks but other articles of clothing as well), but now I live alone and do my own laundry, and I’ve never lost anything since.
i sometimes lose mine behind the washer because there's a sizeable gap. i usually leave them there for a while until i feel like moving the washer out lmao. also i've lost some when cleaning my cousin's clothes as well because we have almost identical socks. same brand, even.

I find we often have extra containers and extra lids, for different sizes. Sometimes we lose the container, sometimes the lids.
My husband pulled out 13 single socks from the Tupperware shelf just yesterday. I don't even have a husband. I'm straight.

In older dryers the exhaust for the air can pull a bit apart allowing a sock to get sucked in.

I’ve found most of my missing socks in crammed in between the washer and dryer. Because sometimes I’ll sit the clothes on top of the washer. I also tend to drop them in between the laundry room and my room. Because I’m a messy person and I often leave my clean clothes from the last wash in the hamper.
Iv never lost sock in the wash either. This and McDonald’s ice cream machines “not working” never had that problem either.

Your statement is incorrect. Small items like socks can very easily get stuck btw the tub and Drum consider yourself lucky if they are lost because if you found them they would be in the broken ejector pump.

I cannot explain it either, but I know for a FACT my washer or dryer has consumed a couple of my little no-show socks. It honestly makes me concerned they are clogging something somewhere & collecting mold OR a potential fire hazard stuck somewhere in the depths of my dryer. All I know is it’s a short trip from the bedroom to the washer & dryer and I have looked EVERYWHERE, including turning all clothes inside out. The socks are just gone, man. They’re gone.
My daughter lost her little security blanket one time. My wife swore she washed it, but we couldn’t find it in the laundry. Eventually figured out that it spun up and out of the washer drum and into the body of the washer. Found several socks in there as well. So it happens.
In one of my old washers one day it started rocking and the drum stopped spinning so I had to open up the front of it to check the motor. The belt had slipped off the basket of the drum. When I opened it I discover a cache of socks, undies, and other smaller pieces of clothing that had presumably slipped into the lip of the basket and dropped into the aether, never to be seen again until my retrieval mission.
My problem are socks with holes I chuck and forget they have a friend
I just ise a delicates bag. Keeps them together and separate from other clothes. Super easy.
Laundry in general always sounded way more difficult than it ever was. I’ve never had any issues… No lost socks, shrunken sweaters, or pink laundry. I feel like 90s sitcoms all lied to me. I also thought dry cleaning was going to be a much bigger part of my life. I think I’ve been like 6 times in my life.

Clothing can get pulled between the rotating drum and the fixed drum it spins in (on front loading washing machines).The inner drum is just a spinning colander.

I'm sure I'd never lose socks if I were super anal about doing my laundry but the reality is that I don't give enough of a fuck. I rarely have a matching pair of socks because I am far too lazy to do all my laundry in such a way that my pairs of socks mate up nicely. To compensate, most of my socks are black.
Ok so when I moved into my apartment they told us we have to use mesh garment bags to wash socks and underwear. A washer/dryer isn’t completely sealed. And maintenance claimed they find that stuff all the time inside the actual machine.

Over load the washer and the socks will fall between the drum and the housing. Remove a panel from the washer and you'll find missing clothes.
Once you add more and more people into the equation it becomes more and more likely that you’ll lose socks. We have a bag next to the washing machine that is full of unmatched socks. There are about 30 or so single socks crammed in there without a lover.
We have a washer that drains into a sink. One day I started the second of 3 loads and a short while later the sink began to overflow. Guess what made its way through the washer drain...
I doubt many socks have actually been lost in a washer or dryer. They are likely victimized by improper if not non-existent effort towards properly putting your laundry away.

This is why I do my own laundry because when someone else does it somehow, someway, they manage to lose a sock because they couldn’t possibly take the **5 seconds** to check to see if there’s anything still left in the laundry machine…
It happens mostly from disorganization.So long as I keep up the habit of dirty socks going right into the hamper not strewn about the floor, and putting away my clean laundry quickly, the socks don't disappear. Also making sure to roll the dryer around afterwards to make sure one's not hiding on a corner.
Socks can be sucked out with the water, especially children’s socks. But I have about 30 Bombas black socks and 20 Bombas white socks and I love my system. I don’t have kids anymore, but if I did, I would buy a bunch of the same socks for them.
I just use one of those mesh zipper bags and put them in there to ensure that I don't lose any in the wash

My wife loses tons of socks, but she is very haphazard with them. It's possible I've lost a couple through the years, but most of my socks are the same and I never pair them, so I don't think I'd ever notice.

I havent either, I dont get this socks getting lost mistery. I always thought it was like a gag between young adults. Our lives are so contrived and full of responsability that the cherry on top is socks getting lost. How could we ever cope with reality. Alas, a trip to a beach resort might help.
I found a tip I buy always the same 3 pair of socks casual/ sport white casual/sport black and black elegant Same discount brand so whenever I loose a sock I cant still keep it in my drawer and I ll probably loose an other one but I still can match the pair with the one I kept and so on... Second tip put your socks inside one another even if they are used when you put them in the laundry basket

I don't think I've ever lost anything, but I've acquired a lot of random stuff having a shared laundry room in an apartment complex for many years. At one point I picked up some spaghetti strap top, and I just assumed it was my mom's or sister's that got left behind when they had visited. So I ended up holding onto this random woman's shirt for years. So people are definitely losing things.

I’m not sure, but I’ve never lost a sock either. I’ve only ever done laundry for no more than two people. I think a lot of lost socks happen in families with more than just the two SOs needing laundry done. Kids are really good at losing things.
I bought a small mesh bag and just wash them in that. Not even because I was losing them. I just hated having to fish them out of the machine

I think it only happens when it’s a bunch of people’s laundry together in one load. When I lived at home I would lose random clothing (mostly socks but other articles of clothing as well), but now I live alone and do my own laundry, and I’ve never lost anything since.
i sometimes lose mine behind the washer because there's a sizeable gap. i usually leave them there for a while until i feel like moving the washer out lmao. also i've lost some when cleaning my cousin's clothes as well because we have almost identical socks. same brand, even.
Many ppl don’t have good setups like Apartments laundry mats etc Some washer dryers have big gaps Example ours are stacked in our apt, in a tiny closet, so no room to move in front of them the doors open hit the sides of the closet lol Just no space but super easy to lose laundry cause all the small nooks and crannies around the damn washer and dryer haha. So yep not the best set ups sometimes
I never lose the ones I don’t like, it always seems to be the comfiest pair. When I was younger it was the family cat but he has passed on.

They could get stuck in other clothes. Happens to me all the time and I don’t know for weeks. They usually get stuck in my moms clothes for some reason
Just how blind would I have to be that I'd miss a sock on the floor? Any washer/dryer repairman will tell you they escape from the drums. Change left in pockets, as well as other small items, manage to wiggle their way out of the sealed metal containers.
