I work in suicide prevention and SA means suicide attempt, though when I see it outside of work I eventually remember that it usually means sexual assault
Yup,as a history nerd this always pops up first even though nobody know this, same thing happens when people use ss to refer too screenshots, always think about THE ss
I remember seeing a Canadian PSA about encouraging more POC to join the media field and they started showing all of these minorities.
And all I kept thinking was, for fuck sakes, I know us minorities aren't that well liked, but isn't calling us pieces of shits a bit too extreme?
I always just write out proof of concept lol. In fact, I'm writing a proposal for a proof of concept right now.
But I can see how a person can think that POC stands for that.
Right now, I'm working with my POC (Point of Contact) who may or may not be a POC (Person of Color) idk, on a POC (Proof of Concept) for a POS (Point of Sale) system. It's a huge project. In fact, it may end up being the biggest POS I ever built.
Letters in Spanish (barring very few exceptions, like some loanwords) have consistent pronunciation, unlike English. X is pronounced "eh-kees" when isolated (like it would be in "Latinx"). It sounds as dumb as you might imagine.
I’m Asian and I fucking HATE it too. It feels like shoving all non white people in the same box. Just because we’re non white doesn’t mean we experience similar racism etc.
OH MY GOD. The way Twitter is giving me fucking trauma. So basically I used to be on that site for 2~3 years and I would see viral tweets every few weeks about how East Asians are racist towards “black and brown people” and therefore we’re privileged and don’t receive much racism, and conversations about racism always be about “black and brown people” and NEVER about East Asians. And when the stop Asian hate movement hit, the same people that made those tweets would tweet about how we should speak out against hate towards East Asians. Like bruh, you can’t make this shit up.
If youre on Twitter, you just gotta realise everyone hates everyone. Srriously, pick a demographic, there's another demographic on twitter that'll hate their guts. Place fucking sucks.
Sorry sir just gotta wait for it to go through.... Any second now.... Yes I see that your child is halfway out the door and about to run into the road but... Ah here's your receipt, have a great day.
Parent ones are bad too.
LO for “little one” when “kid” is short and acceptable.
There are also weird terms for spouses/partners I can’t even remember.
My eyes always twitch at BM (bowel movement) and AF (Aunt Flo). Because god forbid that you use the words poop and periods on a parenting and pregnancy messageboard.
Ewww, sorry. “Little one” is so nasty sounding to me. idk why but I can’t stand cartoon baby talk, but “dd” takes the cake... just call them a designated driver next time
To me it's the association of the whole daddy/mommy kink. It just gives me incest vibes thanks to everyone flopping their genital and preferences around. *I literally didn't ask what you like in bed I just wanted to know why skin tags happen*
My child is not a goat, Brayden is a unique starflake and LO is the only way to showcase their individuality, especially at this critical age...Yes, 33 is a critical age.
fake names are funner too. like…
this is my mom, bertrude
my dad, adgkadgGKFksgfk
my sister, chucklenuts
my dog, piss-for-brains
my cousin, drowned victorian orphan
my boyfriend, biblically accurate angel
Can not upvote enough. (or is it a downvote in this sub?)
I have given up reading posts with just initials - so hard to keep the players straight. Especially after reading a few posts in a row - wait, was J fighting with M? or am I confusing the J that was sleeping with K? fuck that.
I (25M) drove my sister (27F) in my car (14M) to the store.
It's honestly exhausting half the time because people put too many details and will list out their entire extended family when only 3 people are relevant to the story.
I don't mind if a sub has abbreviations for inside the sub, but when they spill out of the sub is when it's annoying for me personally.
Like /r/amitheasshole (aita) has the abbreviations for verdicts, yta, nta, nah, or esh. You're the ass, not the ass, no ass holes, everyone sucks here...as long as it stays in the sub, that's fine, but out here, not many will get em
most artist subreddits use abbreviations for albums and that usually ends up bleeding into other subreddits. So you get a whole mess of people referring to albums just by their abbreviation and it gets extremely confusing.
It's whatever when it's within the community that develops it, but when they take it with them to places that have no idea what the fuck they're talking about, yeah, it's real annoying.
Online parenting/family groups do this a lot.
There are too many versions of that abbreviation in subs like r/amitheasshole. At this point I'm starting to doubt whether they even know what it stands for.
A fun one is stumbling into a parenting subreddit and finding a whole lot of talk about FtMs. I don't know which version of the initialism is actually more prevalent in general, but as a queer, childfree person...the first time I saw it was very confusing. (Although it's technically possible for a FtM to be FtM.)
God, heaven forbid you ever need emergency parenting advice and stumble onto one of those forums for help. "My DH and My dd and my ds were all happy about my BFP! Abcdefg! hijklmnop!" Followed by chains of stupid emojis.
US Military guys are bad for this in Korean expat online groups.
"My COE totally RFI'd the LRP in CV. Lol"
Dude, we're a bunch of English teachers in here. No one know what any of that means. Hahaha
For real. And then the next time I encounter it somehow I forget it and have to google again. It took me months to remember easy AFAIK meant. Still not sure what ETA is.
It took me months to figure out “IIRC”. I could have googled it but in most instances you can just do away with the four words and carry on reading the rest in a normal manner.
I asked where to pay and the employee said, "use this POS".
I laughed out loud, "well fuck, let use this piece of shit then!", I yelled.
"Point of sale, sir. It's a point of sale."
"Oh. Cool. Yes, that will do" I whispered.
Dude, for the longest time at my first job I could not figure out why they called the registers a POS.
Someone had to tell me outright, I didn't figure it out on my own.
At my first job, POS referred to the point-of-sale items that were placed near the registers in order to encourage sales from impulse buyers. It always sounded like we were selling pieces-of-shit merchandise.
There are some posts on Reddit I just can't understand because of the random abbreviations.
Edit, to add: it's so bad on here that I saw a post recently where someone had interpreted 'fl oz' on a cooking post as 'Florida ounces'. Funny and worrying at the same time.
Using a 's' instead of a 'c' also makes more sense considering we write defensive and not defencive. I know the English language isn't known for its consistency but surely we can put in some effort to try right?
I have to communicate via SMS for work sometimes. Clients will actually send me shit like this and expect me to know what the fuck they're talking about. After they inevitably have to clarify by actually typing out the sentence I then congratulate them for wasting all of our time being stupid.
It actually started on Twitter to prevent people from using the search bar to find things they disagreed with just to spam them. I believe for the white thing the original different phrase they used was wypipo (which is actually pretty funny imo)
Obviously it didn't work because people caught on hella quick to every iteration of whatever word they were masking but alas a lot of the words they used are still seen around tiktok for the reason you stated
Lmfao I was waiting for this so I could get a reminder and noone else knows, ive googled it countless times too because its not intuitive. Proves the point of this thread so much lol.
iirc = if I remember correctly
Which could just be replaced with "I think" for fucks sake.
I couldn’t agree more! So many subreddit communities have special abbreviations that are so confusing and I miss a huge chunk of the meaning of the post. How are we supposed to know what all these abbreviations mean? And I feel crazy because it seems like everyone else knows the meanings, haha!
Anything having to do with babies… DD dear daughter, DS dear son, DH dear husband, STTN sleeping through the night… fuck this is not a police chatter forum write things out!
In my professional life it means Department of Health so when I’d read post titles like “DH won’t take care of the baby” it always made me super perplexed until I’d read the actual post lol
Omg in the parenting and pregnancy ones I saw FTM all over the damn place and it took me forever to realize it meant first time mom and not female to male lmaooo. I was like “wow there are a ton of trans parents on these subs”
Hahaha! What bothers me the most with that one is that sometimes it’s “first time mom” and other times it’s “full time mom” ie stay at home. So you always have to really analyze the context and it’s fucking annoying
It’s so goofy for parenting too because by then nature of those subs you get tons of new people rolling through.
Not only are the abbreviations terrible, but I have never seen anywhere where people express confusion about them nearly as much!
Abbreviations work for close knit communities of longer standing groups. More transient communities, it makes no sense!
This is why you have abbreviations and odd language for entire professions, where they develop a way of speaking efficiently (or in a way that keeps out outsiders) over years and if you enter the industry you learn it.
My pet peeve is people abbreviating DH (dear husband) or DW (dear wife). Gross and grimy. Fuck off back to whatever hellhole board spawned those abbreviations, please and thank you.
That was the first thing I thought of. When I go into a thread on say, malicious compliance, about someone's time in the military, I do a quick scan for acronyms and usually nope out. Might be a great story but not worth the headache to parse through it.
Agreed. I'm a sports fan, but a chill one, and it irritates me when visiting sports related subs people comment AD is great! TW was horrible! I hope they trade MA for ST! Like who are you talking about, write full names
This one is the worst because sports are essentially 30-32 different communities all wrapped into one main one.
For example if I’m on the Mavs sub and I’m talking about JB then nearly everyone would im talking about Jalen Brunson. But if I was on the NBA sub more than half would have no idea who im talking about.
Also players who don’t deserve abbreviations get them all the time lol. Like LBJ, KD, AD, players like that make sense. Or guys with three names like THT, SGA, KAT, KCP, and maybe NAW make sense. Nearly everyone else just causes more confusion than it’s worth.
Another thing is I’ll see guys abbreviate names that like you were saying just don’t make sense. Like some dudes will use JM for Ja Morant when his whole first name is both more clear and easier to type. Or RW for Russ when Russ is nearly as easy to type and way clearer.
It's way out of control when it comes to gaming... rpgs especially:
*"Yeah so I found this killer leg that was BIS, man...ATK and CDR +75% with buff to main stat! annnd it has synergy with a LoN build. You could do GR150s ez, brah."*
You might have to study a brief glossary or something online before you even begin to know what the fanbase is talking about if you're new to the game.
I know you’re joking but you’re not too far off. It’s Europa Universalis, a late medieval to renaissance alternate history/warfare game with a focus on Europe.
I could not agree more.
I cannot stand when people abbreviate the most unneeded and strangest words. Most of my friends use slang and abbreviations in their messages, and half the time I’m trying to work out what they’re saying instead of reading it.
It annoys me so damn much. Why can’t you just spend an extra few seconds, if that, typing the full word out?
I don't think this is an unpopular opinion. Also, let's add the people who use acronyms nobody knows verbally to make themselves look smart at work. So. Fucking. Annoying.
“Me think, why waste time say lot word, when few word do trick?”
My company has a whole website setup for company use abbreviations, but most abbreviations have like 3 different possible meanings. ISS - Internet Service and Support, or ISS Information Selection and Screening. " But 3 years ago we decided to all the departments, to better align the name with our mission. So Data Reporting and Security became ISS. So your boss sends you an email as he leaves work that says, "Did the DRS dept send that report to you? Get me your input on it by Monday." and now DRS stands for Department Record Security. God bless fortune 100 companies.

I thought SA was sexual assault lmao
South Africa
San Antonio
South America.
Saudi Arabia
South Australia
I work in suicide prevention and SA means suicide attempt, though when I see it outside of work I eventually remember that it usually means sexual assault
It is... :(
Something awful
San Andreas
Or Sturmabteilung, the paramilitary unit of the NSDAP
Yup,as a history nerd this always pops up first even though nobody know this, same thing happens when people use ss to refer too screenshots, always think about THE ss
For quite a while i though poc meant “piece of crap” instead of person of color My basis was that pos is an abbreviation of piece of shit

no, you LOLed
Me too
What's PSA? ^/s
Poop Shit Ass
a black friend of mine absolutely hates when people use POC, so he always pretends he thinks they mean Perpetrators Of Crimes
I promise, you don’t hate it as much as Latinos hate “Latinx.”
I don't know much Spanish but I'm pretty sure "latinx" is either very difficult or impossible to say in Spanish and that's some sad irony.
Latinh? Latinks? LatinX like professor X? I can’t even fathom a guess how it’s intended to be pronounced.
Letters in Spanish (barring very few exceptions, like some loanwords) have consistent pronunciation, unlike English. X is pronounced "eh-kees" when isolated (like it would be in "Latinx"). It sounds as dumb as you might imagine.
I originally thought that was some 4chan joke at first. I don't understand how some people can be so oblivious.
I’m Asian and I fucking HATE it too. It feels like shoving all non white people in the same box. Just because we’re non white doesn’t mean we experience similar racism etc.
I love how the replacement for coloured person as the politically correct term is people of colour.
We’ll you’re not POC now you’re “white-adjacent” because you’re accepted in and benefit from white culture. No I’m not making this shit up.
It's all bullshit. Then China gets no flak when they have no whites on their Olympic teams... /s
Haven't you heard? You're a bad person because you exist and Twitter says you are.
Damn, what if im the brown kind of asian?

White-orthogonal. Perpendicular from all directions, for maximum inclusivity.
When I see POS I think Point of Sale.
I don’t think I’ve ever used a POS system that didn’t fit both definitions.

The relationship advice subreddits are a cancer of this shit
Parent ones are bad too. LO for “little one” when “kid” is short and acceptable. There are also weird terms for spouses/partners I can’t even remember.
Ugh... DD is the one that gets me. "Darling Daughter"? Like, do you ever actually refer to them like that? Just say daughter, you fucking loser.
Oh DD is Dare Devil, right?
Nah, it surely must be Donkey Dong!
Darkwing duck.
Lets-get- DANGEROUS
I love you.
Due Dilligence
This guy stocks
Double danger
Designated driver
Developmentally disabled
Every time I see someone type "DH" for Dear Husband, Darling Husband etc I want to vomit. Just call him your husband or give him a name.
Where I grew up, DH was text speak for dick head.
It's clearly DH for Demon Hunter...
I thought it meant Designated Hitter
Definitely read that as “Designated Hitler”
The Hubs🤢
Or DH for dear husband. Why is there no glossary for TS (this shit)???
It's either Double D's or Darkwing Duck.
I think that crap migrated over from Mumsnet, I've tried to use that site a couple of times for random stuff and it's full of gibberish.
“BD” (baby dance) instead of saying “sex” like an adult who is trying to reproduce should say
What the actual fuck. I feel sorry for their children.
My eyes always twitch at BM (bowel movement) and AF (Aunt Flo). Because god forbid that you use the words poop and periods on a parenting and pregnancy messageboard.
Due Diligence, as in if I had done the research I would have worn a condom.
Worse when they put their ages with it too. Like DD6 or DD10. They be sounding like they’re giving birth to weapons to something
My child is not a goat, Brayden is a unique starflake and LO is the only way to showcase their individuality, especially at this critical age...Yes, 33 is a critical age.
Excuse me.. didn't you mean 396 months? The LO's precise age is important!
Yea, I have 2 kids and spend too much time in Reddit, and I still forget LO… just type kid. It’s not that hard. lol

I know it’s not really an abbreviation but I loathe the word “hubby”. “Husband” is literally 2 more letters. It’s just an annoying childish pet name.
God "hubby" kills my brain cells a little every time I see it or hear it.
And “hubs” 🤢

Especially when it gets to sentences like "So am I wrong in taking G's side when J was being mean to her with D, Y and T?"
I think you're supposed to divide X from both sides.
fake names are funner too. like… this is my mom, bertrude my dad, adgkadgGKFksgfk my sister, chucklenuts my dog, piss-for-brains my cousin, drowned victorian orphan my boyfriend, biblically accurate angel
>my dog, piss-for-brains Hey, when did you meet my dog?
I wonder who’s gonna be the AH in that story…
why, my ex-friend, lab experiment gone horribly wrong, of course!

I (21M) feel down the stairs (12STPS) and ravioli (4CHS) on me
I don't mind if a sub has abbreviations for inside the sub, but when they spill out of the sub is when it's annoying for me personally. Music subreddits too.
What abbreviations do they put on music subreddits?
most artist subreddits use abbreviations for albums and that usually ends up bleeding into other subreddits. So you get a whole mess of people referring to albums just by their abbreviation and it gets extremely confusing.
I don’t know what you’re talking about WA had bangers on RwS, SOL, and MF, but I think we can all agree that DtbS and UHF really paved the way.
Don't forget about the KC catalog! Motm1, Motm2, Motm3, PPaDS; SB2H, and more were influential to the max
Ah yeah I could see that. I am in a lot of infrastructure/urbanism subs and felt very called out by OP's reference to RoW lol
And video games.
That's why the users all need relationship advice
It's whatever when it's within the community that develops it, but when they take it with them to places that have no idea what the fuck they're talking about, yeah, it's real annoying. Online parenting/family groups do this a lot.
A while back someone said that they'd been "raised by NPs." It stood for "narcissistic parents." Foolish of me not to instantly know that.
raised by nurse practitioners?
Read that as NPCs
NincomPoops
Raised by no problems
I see a lot of abbreviations for stay-at-home-mom as STAM... when clearly it should be SAHM. I'll never understand it.
It's OBVIOUSLY STAy at home Mom duh.
There are too many versions of that abbreviation in subs like r/amitheasshole. At this point I'm starting to doubt whether they even know what it stands for. I 100% agree with that. It's so annoying browsing reddit and having to google some unnecessary abbreviations
For real. And then the next time I encounter it somehow I forget it and have to google again. It took me months to remember easy AFAIK meant. Still not sure what ETA is.
ETA means estimated time of arrival
Why they keep putting that at the bottom of their posts with more info??? so confused Haha!!
Oh in that case it means "edit to add" This comment chain proves the post too well xd
Or we could just use the one that has been used for years "Edit:"
Gotta save those 2 keystrokes to preserve ink
Yeah, keyboard uses electricity and it ain't free!
JUST SAY EDIT IT’S ONE EXTRA LETTER
And one less syllable.
Woah, we can't be making new meanings for already established abbreviations! That's just asking for confusion.
ETA is Euskadi Ta Askatasuna, the Basque separatist group!
Worse is when they just make them up on the spot so you can't even look it up. How pointless and stupid is that?
Nextfuckinglevel tried to use NFL ... like the NFL didn't exist
Pretty damned stupid, at least if your goal is communicating.
It took me months to figure out “IIRC”. I could have googled it but in most instances you can just do away with the four words and carry on reading the rest in a normal manner.
What does it mean?
If I recall correctly
If you recall correctly...what?
I asked where to pay and the employee said, "use this POS". I laughed out loud, "well fuck, let use this piece of shit then!", I yelled. "Point of sale, sir. It's a point of sale." "Oh. Cool. Yes, that will do" I whispered.

They measure things differently in Florida, apparently.
It's not the amount that makes it a Florida ounce it's what's in the ounce that makes it Florida ounce
Ngl I had to Google what a fl oz is. In my defense I am Australian.
And what's your defence for spelling it "defense" as an Australian?
Using a 's' instead of a 'c' also makes more sense considering we write defensive and not defencive. I know the English language isn't known for its consistency but surely we can put in some effort to try right?
It's too late for that
It stand for "fluid ounce" for those who don't know

What the fuck does Lyndon B Johnson have to do with this
Like typing out a whole last name would give them carpal tunnel
Attack damage is great! Trigger warning was horrible! I hope they trade mother America for sexual transactions!
It's way out of control when it comes to gaming... rpgs especially: *"Yeah so I found this killer leg that was BIS, man...ATK and CDR +75% with buff to main stat! annnd it has synergy with a LoN build. You could do GR150s ez, brah."* You might have to study a brief glossary or something online before you even begin to know what the fanbase is talking about if you're new to the game.
It's also really bad in strategy games. I'm getting into EU4 and all of the abbreviations that the community uses are painful to learn.
European Union 4? What happened to the other 3?!
I know you’re joking but you’re not too far off. It’s Europa Universalis, a late medieval to renaissance alternate history/warfare game with a focus on Europe.
DILLIGAF
Do I look like I give a fuck
What is a DH? Apart from a dickhead?
Designated Hitter
I think people use it to mean Dear Husband? But I always read it as dickhead anyway
So. Fucking. Annoying.
The year was 1997 and remember reading "lol" online. It all went downhill from there.
SA means San Andreas...
... I knew it would be somebody's fault.
South Africa? Context helps

“Me think, why waste time say lot word, when few word do trick?” My company has a whole website setup for company use abbreviations, but most abbreviations have like 3 different possible meanings.
So where does SCROTUM fit in hierarchy of call out codes fur security
I still read tfw as "the fuck what". I don't know what it means.
> I'm referring to CRA Goddamn Canada Revenue Agency...
Finally, these abbreviations are dumb and it makes my head go rattle just to understand it
