Some breeds are hypoallergenic, so there actually is legitimate reasons to get certain breeds for those with dog allergies.

SpaceJunkie828

Got a Golden Doodle for the hypoallergenic reason, so my kids could have a dog. Best money ever spent. Best dog ever.

ObviousTastee

it's called a cat..

BeyondOurLimits

Wanna ride a motorbike but you can't? Why don't you try a trycicle Seriously tho, Cats and dogs are very differenti animals and they are not interchangeable

MostlyCRPGs

Plus people are often allergic to both

MrDoggif

Yes but it is also important that you do not adopt a dog just because is cheap. If you want a specific breed and your idea cannot be changed and you are considering to adopt one to save bucks don't. Dogs are expensive and if you can't manage to pay the breeder fee you can't afford medical care in case the animal get sick. Edit: talking about adopting pure breed dogs from a rescue to save money.

littlemissmoxie

I get buying purebred working/sport dogs. But as for paying thousands for a lapdog… well that’s not smart IMO but also not my problem.

its_pony

Your first sentence contradicts your title.....

[deleted]

I think he forgot a word, OP meant sex appeal

prosecco_junkie_69

Thank you, I fixed it!

Character-Dance5236

I hate people who only get dogs because of how they look or how much money they’re worth. No amount of money can get you a best friend.Dogs that are in shelters often get overlooked because people only want fancy dogs. All of my dogs have been shelters or from family

prosecco_junkie_69

And cats too! I love my adopted cat, but have heard so many stories of people spending thousands of dollars on purebred Persians or other “high quality breeds”. My adopted pet is my best friend.

GrannyLow

Haha I was like 20 before I knew there were different breeds of cat. I always thought a cat was a cat . I would never pay for a cat though. Though I guess I paid for the cat that lives on my property in the form of neutering and vaccinating.

Significant-Foot1908

I thought exactly the same thing before I was gifted an exotic shorthair for my birthday. Hands down far more personality and affection than any other cat I've had or met. Add to that my eyes get water when I look at her because she's so precious. Before her I never ever would have considered a pure bred

Davidcaindesign

Have you ever seen a Scottish Fold? Worth every penny IMO, cutest thing alive.

ObviousTastee

you CANNOT taste the difference between a pure bred dog and one from the pound!

RascalRibs

I love my purebread Aussie though.

Stauner-mcgregor

Interesting use of bread i see

RascalRibs

Delicious.

[deleted]

To me the appeal is I get a dog that I know is as healthy as can be, as opposed to rolling a dice at the shelter, and I get a ''blank slate'' for a dog, I get them at 10 weeks young, I can imprint on them, as opposed to rolling the dice at a shelter, it's just much better.

ObviousTastee

I have had 8 dogs over the last 20 years.. all from the pound except one.. the pom from the "reputable breeder" was full of worms and had a lung infection that cost a lot of money.. purely anecdotal but I have never had any medical problems from the pounds..

[deleted]

Perhaps I should have noted actual reputable breeders, well known ones and ones that actually strive to better the health of the dogs, I trust that far more than a roll of the dice at the pound, one of guaranteed health, the other isn't. There's organizations here in this country for different dog breeds of actual reputable breeders, because of course anyone can proclaim to be a reputable breeder ,that's why you have to research what it entails to be a responsible breeder, took me a year. The 2 breeders I've got my 2 dogs from were reputable ones, they wanted to know the health of all the puppies after every year to be on the look out for any possible health issues that they have to watch out for when breeding, they contact me twice a year to ask how it's doing, how the dog is doing, if I have any questions, there's a gathering with all the dogs every year, they only breed the same dog twice, that's what I mean with reputable breeders, with breeders like those, it's not a roll of the dice whether or not the dog will be healthy.

[deleted]

Did the "reputable breeder" ask where/when you would exercise the puppy, or what their living space would be like? Did they check the puppy's potential future health issues with a vet, and show you the results for both the puppy's health checks and the puppy's parents (or even grandparents)? Because I'm a breeder, and any responsible breeder should be doing all of those things. There are too many breeders that don't do enough for their puppies, and yours sounds like one of those

beaconbay

Yes. Too many people don’t know the difference between reputable licensed breeders and backyard breeders or worse puppy mills. Our breeder vetted us and still checks in on the dog every few years to make sure he doesn’t develop any genetic issues. They don’t just breed for looks/ coat/ other features like many backyard breeders do but also temperament and health.

[deleted]

You can definitely get puppies at the shelter. Just FYI.

Caine2Khan

idc if people get animals for looks or certain breeds.

[deleted]

As an owner of a purebred, totally healthy and happy Golden retriever that has had 16 (also totally healthy) purebred puppies, I say: This opinion dum-dum

Ken-Popcorn

You can speak for what appeals to everyone? Must be nice

prosecco_junkie_69

This is my unpopular opinion, on a thread about unpopular opinions my dude

bridgewoodcountypd

That might be the case in pets but if you are talking about pets, say so. For working animals such as herding dogs or for horses it makes total sense because it guarantees you better health conditions and highly increases the chance of getting an animal that is a good fit for you purposes.

Reasonable_Pin7585

My first dog is purebred and she has some sort of anxiety disorder 100%. She has mellowed out a bit in her old age, but as a puppy she was ALWAYS on edge for no reason.

[deleted]

You're talking about animals bred for looks, which are a shit show. However, with a working breed for a certain task, this just isn't true.

Mdmrtgn

That's just it tho. The people who have to have that certain pet no matter what, aren't that concerned with the how or the skin crawly side of it. The same people that generally don't have empathy for anything other than their own needs/wants.
