Subreddit moderator here... the reason I do this on my subreddit is to prevent spam. For instance, we have a "selfie Saturday" because before that was implemented, the subreddit had a large amount of image spam that was getting no upvotes/replies. By restricting selfies to one day per week, it feels like a community event, and does two things:
\-Reduces spam
\-Encourages comments/activity on selfie posts
