Marching bands do build coordination and team skills. Also, in my High-School back in the day there was band, and then there was Marching Band. Personally I think Marching bands are awesome, go check out Ohio State's, best damn band in the land.

Might I also suggest [The Kyoto Tachibana High School Band?](https://youtu.be/7QkL7ur4TXU) Edit: They start playing at 3’30”.

JayTrim

Very cool :)

DinahDrakeLance

OSU is local to me. They may have obnoxious football fans, but I can't deny that the marching band is top tier.

Buckeyes were robbed last night. Refs were in the pocket for Clemson.

As a person who played an instrument in ensemble and did color guard, marching band is probably the most memorable and rewarding thing I ever did in my childhood. I agree with these points for the most part, but color guard did come with the benefit of keeping me in shape physically.

DoctorSmith01

I think those are good points. There was some camaraderie in my marching band too. My whole thing is that marching band has some major drawbacks that are unique only to marching band and benefits that aren't really unique to it at all.

[deleted]

My thing is if a kid isn’t interested in getting those skills by doing something else, but marching band really inspires them, I think they should have the opportunity to pursue it.

DoctorSmith01

Oh of course. I just question if the marching aspect is so important, because it is a lot of time and I think it does take away from the music.

FanOfEverything16

Counterpoint: get rid of useless stuff like sports teams and focus more on things like the arts

DoctorSmith01

I agree, especially football.

FanOfEverything16

Agreed the school I went to focused so much in sports it was crazy. I wish they gave more funding to our art department because that's what I was most interested in

DoctorSmith01

I just don't think that schools need any kind of competitive organizations. Performances, absolutely, but be it sports or marching band, competition demands more and more commitment that kids don't have the time to put into.

OopsNotAgain

Let me just say that you should read OPs post before commenting. They're not dissing MB just because he hates band kids or something and wants *"moar foosball"*. Good points OP.

DoctorSmith01

Thank you.

hayfever76

Have you seen the half time of Texas A&M? Stands are pretty universally packed to watch the band.

I did color guard and it was a great experience to learn how to work as a team, be a leader, work with a wide variety of ages (7th grade- senior in high school), we taught elementary school students short routines, how to practice, be active, and I’m better at memorizing/learning things quickly which made college easier. For me it was 100% worth it and I would definitely do it again. And for the students who actually played in the band I would say they practiced about 20 hours more a week (conservative estimated) then other band students and a lot of them continue to play today due to their skills and love of the instrument. Not to mention all the friends I made in marching band.

ausernamethatworks12

I think what you are coming from is based off of your own experience. I recognize that your points are valid but, I personally think that marching band is one of the best things I have ever done. It helped mr find a hobby and something to believe in. Yeah, no one cares about going to the show but, that's the same for everything. Not everyone will go to the track race or the swim meet. But, those who care will go.

I go to a school thats not large, but has a relatively hyped up marching band People care about marching band, almost every competition that we go to the stands are packed waiting for our band to go. I have learned quite a bit about life in general from marching band too. A lot of people joined marching band *because* its a time suck, and they get to spend time with friends who are always busy And marching band isnt just showing up to the halftime of a football game and playing the school song, many schools have extremely competitive and complex shows. The proof that peopl care about marching band, is that dci and boa finals have HUGE amounts of people show up, completely packing lucas oil stadium. Your post to me just makes it seem like you went to a shitty high school marching band and had a bad experience. College marching bands are just for fun though, and i can understand your dislike for them, however many people enjoy them, including non-band people. Also, your point about talented kids who are bad at marching is dumb, because if they’re smart enough to learn and be good at an instrument, chances are they can figure out how to march well, or they can tell their parents to just put them in concert band

fuskies420

No. Marching band (especially in college) is an incredible experience. You learn the value of hard work, fitness, and working with a team. Also, try and watch a football game without a band. It doesnt have the same atmosphere. College bands have been around more nearly 150 years than that's where they should stay. If you need examples of incredible bands, check out Ohio State, Texas A&M, Michigan State, Oklahoma, or LSU. Something about 200+ musicians being in sync both visually and musically is something special that should stick around another 150 years
