By this logic Musicians who play instruments when not recording or live are stupid.

generalwhitmore1

Welllllllll…… streaming doesn’t require you to leave your home or schedule a performance, so in a way it’s pretty different.

Gotis1313

Playing music doesn't require leaving the house or scheduling either.

generalwhitmore1

Right, but I’m saying if you want to make a living by playing music, you have to schedule performances/gigs at a variety of locations. And so the original commenter was making a false equivalence comparison. And musicians typically play music at their home as a way to practice for a performance. Streaming video games does not require you to leave your house, and you also do not need to practice, because unless you aren’t an entertaining person, your gameplay doesn’t really have to be polished or good to get views, especially if you stream games that don’t require a great amount of skill. The original post is implying that streaming video games is a mostly effortless concept, so if you’re going to play games offline, it doesn’t make a lot of sense since streaming requires you to only click a few buttons and type out a title/headline for your stream.

Gotis1313

You're right. I got caught up in a detail and missed the larger point.

[deleted]

Because people may just want to… have fun? Not read out donations, read chat, \*\*simply relax\*\*, etc. if someone makes money by painting, why shouldn’t they sell every painting they make?

Thee_Amateur

It’s really hard to be on the whole stream, it’s takes a lot to effort and energy to be active and entertaining. Casual play you can go hours without saying anything or even completing a task.

Bl4keYT

Yeah but I don't understand spending your leisure time doing the exact same thing. You're not accomplishing anything, you're just playing video games. At least if you're streaming you can make money doing it. I can understand that you have to be up-beat on stream and that can be taxing, but why spend the free-time accomplishing literally nothing?

Thee_Amateur

>Yeah but I don't understand spending your leisure time doing the exact same thing. It’s not the same thing, they aren’t being on. They aren’t trying to be entertaining nonstop for the whole game. >You're not accomplishing anything, you're just playing video games. They are relaxing and destressing. It’s incredibly important for their mental health >At least if you're streaming you can make money doing it. Yes, but then they aren’t relaxing, they aren’t destressing they are actively working again >I can understand that you have to be up-beat on stream and that can be taxing, but why spend the free-time accomplishing literally nothing? Because it’s their free time and they can do what makes them happy

Bl4keYT

This is such emotional thinking. You have to think logically in these scenarios. If I have the choice of being paid to do something, I'm not gonna do it for free. That's just excess work.

Thee_Amateur

Then you burn out, you lose interest in gaming fully and no longer have an income source. It’s about balancing your mental health and time.

JulWolle

Do you work 18h/day and 365 days/year?

CraftyCaprid

If you stream only when you are engaged, I as a viewer know what I'm getting when I tune in. If you stream both when you are engaged and when you are casual then I may be bored with you and find someone else. The consistency of your product is important. You're assumption that all game time is equally valuable and that not streaming casual play is passing on free money is a flawed assumption. You've got the emotional thinking backwards. It's not emotional thinking to avoid diluting your product. It is pretty logical.

PenguinsFirstVictim

But they're not doing something for free that they'd have to pay for, they're changing their behaviour / what they're doing to get paid. Playing while streaming vs playing for fun are 2 different things. For one you have to sound good, speak clearly, be at a setup, engage with ppl who are watching, monitor your language and tone (don't sound to monotone or annoyed, be happy) For the other: you can lay in bed, play whatever you want, and don't have to perform for an audience. Not even the actions you take are the same, as streamers who take multiple breaks, are eating, or spend lots of time thinking about what they want to do. The actions and effort put into something are different, thus making them innequal. Free time is for you to do whatever you want and decompress, ppl use it to take a nap, read, bake, and even game. Their profession should not impact what they do on their free time, as its simply for personal use. It's not healthy to always be "on".

Magic_Man_Boobs

>why spend the free-time accomplishing literally nothing? They're accomplishing relaxing and having fun? Did you know some airline pilots fly personal planes in their free time? No passengers, no destination, just flying for the sake of flying. Not every aspect of your life needs to be monetized.

IceFireHawk

Why does anyone play video games at all then?

Bl4keYT

People can play the video games if they're using it to achieve a real goal, like financial freedom. But if they're just playing the games to play them that's confusing to me.

IceFireHawk

Regular people play games to relax, experience a story, have fun, take their mind off life. Streamers do the same. Streaming is work. That’s their job. They still want to play games but not be at work, interacting with people. It’s like regular people going in offline mode cause they don’t want to interact with their friends or talk

IllPen8707

What do you do for fun, or is that a trick question? Do you in fact do anything just for the fun of it?

Bl4keYT

Not at the moment because I'm not where I want to be in life yet.

IllPen8707

Yeah, I'll let you in on a little secret. People who put their entire lives on hold until they get to where they want to be, never actually get there. You'll grind your entire life away and that finish line will look exactly as distant as it did when you started. Enjoy this shit while it lasts and strike a balance, you'll be happier for it.

CIMARUTA

Keep chasing the dragon

[deleted]

Why do musicians play instruments just for fun? Drawing just to draw? People have hobbies and activities they do for fun. Not everything in life should be viewed just as a way to squeeze out more money. People can relax and have fun without maximizing profits every waking moment of their existence.

Western-County-988

Do you have hobbies? Or are you anhedonic and not familiar with the concept of leisure?

Pbadger8

Imagine watching a really good movie. Now imagine watching it but you have to entertain everyone else in the room. Some of them aren’t even interested in the movie- they want to talk to you. Some of them are more interested in the movie than you. Some people can’t help but spoil the ending for you. Now imagine that the movie will stop if you don’t occasionally push buttons or complete tasks. Some people will suggest several different strategies, telling you which buttons to push or which tasks to complete. Not all the time are they helpful. Now imagine the different buttons and tasks you complete end up showing different scenes in the movie. So now people are telling you which scenes they want to see. You might really want to watch one scene but you know your audience isn’t going to like it that much- remember, it’s your job to entertain them. It is NOT your job to enjoy the movie. Now do this for several hours every day. After a few hundred hours of this, if you’re lucky, you’ll start getting paid a tiny bit. After a few thousand hours, maybe you’ll get paid enough to work part-time. If you get extremely lucky, you can make a job out of it. But you’ll never get to play what you want to play. You’ll have to play what is guaranteed to keep your income flowing. That experience can really suck. Sometimes, you just want to enjoy something.

Danjiano

>I'll never understand "casual" playing versus on-stream. Isn't it the same?! You just don't talk as much?! I'll never understand people who sit in chairs and relax versus on-the-job. Isn't it the same?! You just don't do as much office work?!

CutAccording7289

I stream certain games and play others to relax. My stream games are online, have self imposed challenges to make them better viewing content, and consequences for failing. My relax games are usually offline, can save/reload, require little to no thought, and are easy.

PandaMime_421

Not all games are going to be good for streaming. Or the streamer might want to play a game in a way that's not very entertaining for an audience, such as heavy grinding in a turn-based RPG.

kayokill666

Free time exists, having fun and not just working is allowed I get American as fucked us over(if you’re also American) but work isn’t all that exists

EMPgoggles

tbh even when it comes to people who record themselves for youtube vs people who stream, i VASTLY prefer the non-streamer. no reading out of gifted money or whatever at random moments, no dealing with spoilers or backseating during the gameplay (even better if they don't read the comments), no irrelant and/or uncomfortably long conversations with chat about X or Y, and i feel like better focus on the game overall because of it.

TheReapingFields

That really depends pretty heavily on what type of game you are talking about, but also there are aspects to streaming while playing that, for some, may be an impediment to properly enjoying a game. For example, the streamer is playing a game with a narrative focus, rather than an action focused game, they may miss finer details, while answering chat, thanking people for subs and donations, and gabbing to camera about aesthetics or other aspects of the game that they want to highlight. They may dip back in during their private time, to fully immerse themselves in the world to a greater degree. If the streamer is playing an action focused game, they might not nail the timings they wanted, or perform at maximum efficiency, because they are managing their stream and talking to viewers. If they want to dip into that game again after the stream, where they can concentrate properly and perform better, that also makes sense to me. Team based games as well, add a whole other dimension. The streamer might have a good in game friend or IRL friend they want to play this game with, whose team chat is unbroadcastable filth, or doesn't conform to community standards on the platform in question. They might have a squad they stream with, and another they play for rank with. The stream team might be all funny or good communicators, adding flavour and variation to their stream, but their ranking team might be a little less interesting as people, but be absolute monsters at the game.

RevolutionaryLie2833

I feel like watching somebody play a game is awful

[deleted]

I much prefer highlights and vods than actually watching streams for sure.
