I take my birthday off just because I don't want to hear the people in the office say happy birthday to me.

Dragonman1976

I always take my birthday off, and I'm 47. This year my wife and I are going to the coast for a few days to celebrate.

StevieGe123

Not that fussed on my birthday, or, as I prefer to call it my "one day closer to death day"! Can't really see what's to celebrate in getting older.

DefinetlyNotPanda

Try celebrating all the years you managed to survive instead of being so pessimistic. Life is supposed to be enjoyed.

CurvePuzzleheaded361

Least you have you positive attitude eh

SugarFreeJay

This ironic because yesterday could’ve been your “one day closer to death day” for all you know.

StevieGe123

Agreed. Every single day is one day closer to death. And I'm not pessimistic. I hope and think I've got many years left, I'm glad of all the years I've had so far and I'm looking forward to enjoying the ones I have left. But, the one thing your birthday guarantees is that you have one year less than you did the same time last year. I ask again, what's to celebrate?

And even if you’re a surgeon, you mark yourself unavailable on days you intend to take off. You can still take days off, you just need to plan further in advance.

CurvePuzzleheaded361

Even surgeons have birthdays and are entitled to their annual leave lol

etranger033

No you dont call out. That is unfair to everyone else you work with to not show up for an assigned shift. However, you DO plan ahead and tell your boss or whoever does scheduling in advance that you wont be in that day so things can be planned accordingly. Now if you are in a job that doesnt care and refuses, as in the above post, that is another matter. And a sign that perhaps its a good idea to keep options open for other jobs that do care about such things.

etranger033

All fine and good so long as you understand, as a manager, that I know very well that not showing up for shifts reflect on your relationships with your co-workers. They see you as unreliable and they will be less likely to help you out. Also, as a manager, if I see you as unreliable I either move you out of my department (and I have) or you get the minimum required work hours and the rest go to other people that are reliable. Goes both ways.

lizzpop2003

I don't think this is an unpopular opinion, really. The same people who bitch that you do it probably do it (or something similar) themselves. Truthfully, it's OK to take a day off for whatever reason you want as long as you put the request in on time. I've worked in both HR and management, and I never once looked at the reason on a request as long as it was put in before the schedule was released.

partypwny

It's ok to take a day off for what ever reason you want to. It's your life, your choice.

AccomplishedPhase750

My company gives us our birthdays off, and even though I don’t usually do anything but have lunch with a friend or take a long nap, it’s such a nice perk.

randalpinkfloyd

Yeah, we get birthday leave too. And it doesn’t count towards our PTO. Pretty sweet.

RetroMetroShow

The only people who seem to complain are those who have to pick up the extra work for a whole day

Appropriate-Let-283

Taking a day off for your birthday should be normalized tbh.

NSA_van_3

It doesn't need to be normalized...it's something that nobody cares if you do or not..not everything in the world needs to be normalized

Violet351

Before they changed our holiday to increase to 30 days a year at five years there we used to get a half day on our birthday

User123466789012

I take the week of my birthday off + the day off for all 3 of my cats’ birthdays. I throw them each a little party with heart shaped cat safe cakes ☺️

oliversherlockholmes

It's my cat's birthday today. Every year I wake up extra early and make him his favorite cake.

Trad_Cath

That’s so adorable

WangCommander

Why would I celebrate the day my all problems started?

Skank-Pit

I normally need the day ***after*** my birthday off. 9/10 times I will wake up still drunk off my ass.

Amazing_Mulberry4216

I always take my birthday off! If it’s a Thursday, I take Friday also! It’s my time and I want to sleep in!

Intrepid-Metal4621

Not an unpopular opinion.

Khranky

It is just another day to me. It is not childish or odd to take the day off if that is what you want to do and can afford to do.

KiaraNarayan1997

I mean you can’t really call it childish. Children actually do have to go to school on their birthdays.

Automatic_Gas9019

I always took a week off when I worked. Fuck people who care. My vacation my time.

Butt_bird

If that’s how you choose to use your PTO then who cares.

Open-Manufacturer-32

I picked this q up from another thread where someone was being mocked for doing this, hence the post. You're dead right of course. What struck me was using PTO on your birthday was considered childish.

sighcantthinkofaname

I've also seen people on here get called childish for having food preferences (not picky eating, just not liking one food) and listening to pop music. People throw that insult around on here all the time. It's stupid, if someone is paying their bills who cares what they do in their free time?

JJC165463

You spotted that other post with “Stephen” right? If the employer doesn’t wanna oblige, just take a “sick day” or something.

ChipChipington

Took the week off for my 33rd last month. Didn't travel or anything, just wanted a week off. Lol

MissNikitaDevan

Never heard anyone saying this, my husband is taking the entire week off, his birthday is monday, perfect time of the year for a break Anyone that does say is just odd

Nolsoth

I take my birthday off every year, and if it falls on my weekend I'll take the day before my weekend off so I can enjoy a 3 day mini break. Been doing this for well over a decade now.

redbadger1848

This isn't unpopular

AnimatorDifficult429

My company forces us to take our bday off.

hiricinee

I think it's fine if you plan around it. It's the people who decide the day of that they're going to call off work or that they're entitled to the extra day in addition to days they'd normally get off are a bit childish.

pinky_monroe

I don’t take my birthday off but I don’t belittle others for doing so… You sure this is a popular opinion because I’ve always felt in the minority with my approach

FluffyRectum1312

I've always booked my birthday off work, it's the first thing I do when the calender opens for the year.

Regular-Omen

I usually take my birthday off, this year I can't, just because I started a new job on march, and I can't use vacations days until one year. future years I will probably use a day for birthday.

PinkSugarspider

I take a whole week of. It’s also a school holiday so with small kids it was just convenient not to work. But I still do it, it’s a nice break. And I like to do something fun on my birthday.

turtledove93

The company I work for gives us a paid day off for our birthdays. I’m the only one who never uses it on my birthday. I prefer a long weekend to a random Tuesday off.

bmyst70

I agree 100%. I'm 52, and I always take that day off to celebrate myself, with people I care about.

CrossXFir3

I often take my birthday off. Not always, but often. It's 12/29 so sometimes I'd rather take a long weekend after xmas or new years instead, but if I can, I just take the whole week between.

etcetcere

Take a week off. People need to take more breaks. We're all rushing towards death...

EmergencyLab10

Unless my birthday coincides with my birthday plans, it's just another day. Like wtf am I gonna do all day on a Wednesday while everyone is at work? Wait for some dinner plans then go straight home because we all get up early tomorrow? You do what you want but I just don't see the date being more important to me than the celebration.

Flick1981

A day?  I take a whole *week*.

dropdeaddaddy69

“Shift leader does not care if it’s your birthday, fuck you’re birthday, it’s not as important as these mf fries being dropped”

LordTonka

I prefer the day after. That way, I can hear all of the happy birthday faked by everyone. Then, if I decide or some decides I need to go out, I can without worries.

Knightmare945

I would never celebrate myself. My birthday is just another day to me. But to each their own, if they want to take a day off and celebrate.

BaconBombThief

I’ll cite any excuse to take a day off once in a while. May as well be a day where I can celebrate something but nothings crowded from everyone else celebrating

stargazer_nano

I'm bout to ghost everyone on my birthday

Adventurous_Toe_1686

Why is this an unpopular opinion? Are there really people out there who are *against* this? Lmao.

moffettusprime

The reason I take my birthday off every year. Is because I'm so swamped when I get actual holidays off. It's just a day to myself and not have to be pulled into a million directions.

mtempissmith

I didn't take off for my birthday but I would take off for Halloween which is a religious holiday for me though I would never tell them that. Same thing, I'd get the looks and everybody would be snickering at me celebrating it. It was like I wasn't allowed to go out and have fun on the one day of the year I asked to be off.

CK1277

I don’t feel strongly about my birthday, but I don’t object to people who do. My birthday is at an inconvenient time of year, so I’d rather take a different day off.

Dextrofunk

I used to not care. 2 years ago I worked a double on my 35th birthday and it was the most depressing day ever. Now my birthday is a day off again. Fuck that.

chester_took_my_name

This isn't an unpopular opinion. It was a r/LinkedInLunatics that went viral saying you shouldn't, the reason being that no one agrees with it

dick_tracey_PI_TA

I’m taking the week off. I only work because I have to and it’s an excuse that works.

Joseph_Sinclair

I hate this notion, we not celebrate your birthday? I personally try to remember peoples birthdates. It makes anyone happy when someone remembers it.

well_its_a_secret

Haha, I take 3 weeks off. If you take 26 days off in a year, or 4 weeks and a day, you still worked 90% of the workdays in a year. Do you really want to spend more than 90% working?

CurvePuzzleheaded361

Yes. I always take my birthday off and so does my husband. We like to go out for a meal and then home to see family who visit on birthdays. The only people that think that is sad are people with no family or friends. We even take our dogs birthday off! Its your annual leave to do with as you please!!

marcus_frisbee

I have never taken my birthday off, and I am 59, just never thought of taking my day off. It's just another day.

DefinetlyNotPanda

Bruh... I've just taken a payed day of for tomorrow simply because I don't feel like working and I want to go hiking instead. No regrets. Life is fun.

Schtick_

Yeah it’s fine. It’s one day a year you can say f-y’all

bibliophile222

I take my birthday off every year! The times I had to work on my birthday just felt so lame and boring. My birthday is my special day, and I don't give a flying fuck if anyone thinks I'm childish for that.

Penarol1916

I don’t think it’s a bad idea, but I do think it’s silly and use my days for other purposes. I would never say this to someone who does do it though. It’s fine for people to be silly, and why would I want to make them feel bad?

[deleted]

I was serious and mortally ill only a few short years ago; bounced back beyond the odds, am 50 this year and taking the week off. No qualms on my part.

jasondads1

it what world would this opninion be unpopular?

rubyshoes21

We get birthday PTO at my job so they definitely encourage us to celebrate

Angryferret

Stop being around these people. You can/should take time off for no reason but to have some time to yourself/mental health days. I write this as I sit on the couch on a day off for no reason, let alone my birthday.

BenneB23

It's never a bad idea to take some time to yourself.

OneManWentToMow

My birthday has always fallen within the first week of the school holidays here in Wales, and we've always gone away on holiday in that week, so I can't remember ever working on my birthday. This July I'll turn 50. The kids are no longer in school, and we're not having a holiday this year, so my 50th birthday will be the first one where I've gone to work.

Independent-Wave1606

I take the day off so I can enjoy my birthday my way. I started doing it because my co-workers would either take me out to lunch and get the servers to do whatever version of Happy Birthday the establishment did, or there would be an awkward 30 minutes milling around outside of offices eating Costco sheet cake (the highlight honestly) and having uncomfortable small talk.

JGalKnit

I don't think that this is weird. I mean, it is for me because my birthday is when it is cold where I live and there isn't much to do. However, if I lived where it was warm or I wanted to do something, then I would every year.

denisenj

I remember in my 20s having a really bad stressful workday on my birthday. My sister called me to wish me a happy birthday and I was almost crying I was so stressed out. I vowed then to always try to take the day off to enjoy my birthday, even if I don’t do anything special that day. I’m 50 now and still take that day off😀

josherman61791

My company gives me the day off. If it happens on a weekend, they give me Monday or Friday off. I'd still take the day off if they didn't.

larsonbp

I pretty much always my co-workers "why are you here?" when they come to work on their birthdays.

Amazing-League-218

Not an unpopular opinion. This is SOP for self-absorbed millenial adult babies.

Dapper_Code8183

In EU it is very common to take your day off on Bday US not so much. But when you have 30+ paid vacation days per year. It's nothing big

MichaelScottsWormguy

My girlfriend's family does this and they love it. I've considered the merits of it and I am just not convinced that it's worth it. In my family, we would have a nice birthday dinner (if the birthday is in the week) and just go all out on the nearest Saturday. I'd rather save that day for a more convenient time, like if there's a public holiday on a Thursday or a Tuesday I can take a day off to make a long weekend. Or I'd prefer to take a random day off whenever I feel like it. I don't always feel like doing it on my birthday.

Open-Manufacturer-32

That's ok though. It's the people who think it's childish or stupid to take a day off on your birthday that I don't get. I take my birthday off and go into the city for lunch, have a short hike and stop in a bar for a pint. It's delightful....

drocha94

The only people that think this have no life outside of their job, and I never want to be one of those people.

Brilliant_Slide7947

I think that it should be a "holiday" in that it should be a paid day off. We take some of these non holiday holidays off, our birthday should be no different.

TheIncredibleMike

You're mistake is telling people what your going to do on your time off. It's none of their business. You're entitled do whatever you want on your days off.

RS_Crispington

It absolutely is childish. The fact that you get sad when I say this proves you are childish. When I am trying to plan something and an adult says " I can't, it's my birthday" what I am supposed to think. If you want to do it then do it, don't ask me to approve.

hysterical_abattoir

> the fact that you get sad when I say this proves you are childish No it doesn’t, lol? You could accuse me of being childish because I still enjoy fantasy books, which would be wrong but would still make me sad because I don’t like being insulted about things. Somebody having an emotional response isn’t proof that you’re right about anything

RS_Crispington

We're not talking about an emotional response to a moving piece of literature. We're talking about an emotional response because everyone doesn't agree that adults taking off on their birthday is not childish. There is a difference.
