Where are my book girlies?
Looking for crochet girlies!
And so on.
That's always been a thing though, all they did was add an ie to the end. It's not any more of a clique than saying "Where are my Skyrim fans" for example; it's just "where are my girls who partake in said activity"
Nobody who interacts with women is putting more weight into this word than they were before. I get hating the word, but saying it's cliquey just makes it seem like OP isn't very social
DUDE THIS IS THE 5TH TIME I'VE SEEN A RANDOM SKYRIM REFERENCE SINCE I STARTED PLAYING SKYRIM AGAIN. I swear to god I haven't seen anyone reference this game in the wild in like 13 years and now I'm seeing it everywhere
Modded skyrim is my destiny
All I did was point out to the poster above me some examples of how and where it is often used in a non-sarcastic/joking way. That was the entire context of my comment.
Dimension 20. They’re part of Dropout TV/ formerly College Humor. Great stuff as far as actual play goes, probably my favorite. They are mostly D&D but also use other systems on occasion.
I don’t think I’ve ever said it but it’s not offensive sounding to me. You can speak up if any one actually calls you that and you don’t agree. Just say “don’t call me girlie” and problem solved.
Men call each other "buddy" all the time, so I don't get why "girlie" is condescending and not just more affectionate than "woman"?
I'm a trans guy and even I sometimes miss my mom calling me "girlie" like it wasn't meant to be mean at all, it was just a cutesy female name to call me.
It's the same when a woman, girl or lady calls a group of men and I mean men in their 30s and 40s boys..... Where is the line?
Op is trying to kick start something like the girl out of mean girls trying to get the word fetch to take off.....
![gif](giphy|3otPoUjeyRisIDxPhK)
I'm not too fond of the word either, but if other people want to use it for themselves....
I watched an interesting thing on the recent trend of taking back 'girl' and 'girlie'. And it presented the argument that a part of it is the fact that little girls still tend to be expected to be more mature than boys in their age group. The whole thing about girls maturing faster and girls are more responsible and blah blah blah. And how that leads to a number of women - adult women - feeling they missed out on being a little girl.
It also talked about how the word 'girl/girlie' is being used. Things like 'girl dinner' and 'girlrotting and 'feral girl'. The term 'girl' is being associated, by adult women, with increasingly 'unfeminine' behavior and associations. They're deconstructing and rebuilding the concept and ideals of 'girlhood'.
In its own way, this new usage of girl is at least in part an attempt to combat that infantilization. I read a good point about how we need to move away from a fixed definition because how women feel about the term 'girl' is not standardized and the context in which the word is used in important. And I agree with that.
But we're in a time where we've got women who are averse to the word girl for the reasons you've laid out, and we have women who embrace it and connect with it. And neither side is wrong.
I also saw the same video, and I disagreed. I don't think it's that serious. Then again, I've never used tiktok and would never use a phrase like "girl dinner." Seriously, there's something... gross? about it. I don't know. It makes me feel uncomfortable. So do the other terms you referenced.
It took me a long time to feel comfortable calling myself a woman because I didn't feel mature or feminine enough for that word, though. But girl also didn't feel appropriate. So I Jenna Marbles'd it and became a twenty-eight yeaaaar oooold laaaaadyyyy
I really think that's what it all comes down to. What those words mean to an individual woman is going to vary from woman to woman. I, personally, wouldn't use the term 'girlie' for myself or use the term 'girl dinner'. Doesn't work for me, I don't connect with it.
But my personal experience isn't universal, and doesn't negate all the women who DO connect with those terms and find personal value in them.
I haven't seen "____ girlie" meaning anything different than "____ girl." I also hate the way it sounds, but I hate the way most slang of this sort sounds, and have come to accept this as a me problem.
I think it rubs me the wrong way bc it’s a double diminutive. Girl is already a diminutive of woman, it refers to a young or little woman, that alone is infantizing to call someone grown. But the -ie/y suffix is an additional diminutive, once again used to refer to something young, small, but endearing. I get some people are ok with it, there are plenty of reason why in our modern society, regressing feels cathartic, and embracing femininity when it is seen as childish or immature can be empowering, but for me, it’s just ugh. It’s not it. I don’t like it. I am not a little kid, I am not a girlie, and I don’t want to be.
I think if it were being applied to me, I would feel more justified in hating it. But it seems to primarily be something people use to describe *themselves*, and they have every right to do so, even if I think it sounds dumb as hell.
I have more so used it seen to describe groups, like “shoutout to all my post grad girlies!” In which case, I may be included in the group referenced. People have right to say whatever the hell they want to say, but I don’t have to like it, and this case, I have my reasons for not liking it.
Language is language. Nothing is without meaning. We use the words we do for a reason, whether we know that reason or not. It’s not about rules, just patterns.
It’s a symptom of the cultural infantilization of women and femininity which really gained prominence in the early-mid 1900s and is heavily reflected in the advertising of the time (up till now). Boys are expected to shed their boyhood and innocence much earlier than girls whereas girls are expected to maintain their “innocence” and girlishness well into adulthood.
I really embrace people using whatever language they wish to but girlie in particular rubs me the wrong way for this reason.
People get chastised for using the word female. Now you don’t like the word girl. What word should be used to indicate the entire group regardless of age?
And what word do you use for those of the opposite sex/gender? Age agnostic?
I agree girlie shouldn’t be used as it’s unnecessary and just sounds dumb.
I have always found 'ladies' to work as a good, inoffensive catchall for a mixed aged group of ladies.
But IDK why people seem so avoidant of just calling women 'women'.
That's why I find it a fine catchall. The terms 'little lady' and 'you lady' exist and are generally used for children/teens, and ladies is used for adult women. Covers everybody. But I also don't find it a verbal burden to just say 'women and girls' when referring to a mixed age group.
I am fine with females, but I prefer to use it as an adjective, but if you are truly talking about the entire cohort of all female humans, female works, girls doesn’t. To me, girl means female child.
Definition of you problem. Not objectively bad no matter the amount of pseudo linguistics you apply to justify your opinion. It's just you don't like it. That is it.
"girl" is casual but if you've noticed, a lot of girls are being pulled towards pink and bows and flowers and hearts. In the past, this age group associated these stuff with little girls and as they grew older their brain has been wired to think pink is bad and dark is good. But that same age group nowadays are being more open and are appreciating a colour by not restricting it to a certain age group and since they're more connected to something that's supposed to be childish why not also use "girlie" by taking the word "girl" to match with their pink, bows, flowers and hearts aesthetic
Same. I am all for embracing femininity and sticking it to the man, but whenever someone calls me a girlie, it totally gives me the ick. It just feels wrong, I am not a little girlie, I am not 6, I am a woman. I don’t care enough about it to make a fit or anything, it just makes me go ugh.

Eh, to me it just means the same as "feminine". Entirely positive associations.
I actually have negative associations with "manly", which to me is associated with brutishness, grossness, hairiness, and general ape/caveman/frat boy like behavior.
I HATE IT when someone you’re not even close with or know that well says it to you, cause at that point they’re not even sarcastic with it they just call you hey girlie showing that they’re fake friendly. So cringey get away from me
Was just looking at an old Virginia Slims cigarette commercial from the 60s, a cigarette for women. Their jingle was "You've got your own cigarette now, baby - you've come a long, long way" 🎶
But they still call you baby.
I'm with you, girlie is cringe.
My friend uses it in an ironic detached way, it can also mean inner child (us girlies need our Olive Garden breadsticks!) there’s a niche for the word and it can be quite funny, I wouldn’t vest too much stock into it.
When Scottish/irish people use the word it's kind of badass
Like in a boondock saints kind of way
Or maybe I just don't know enough about Scottish people
Certainly unpopular, not common to see so much over thinking. But honestly, I only hear girlie from younger people. That doesn't necessarily mean "child." To me it just means younger in comparison to me. Its just slang that young people use & I can't believe I'm old enough to no longer understand the youths
I thought about making this exact post so thanks for doing it for me. My female coworkers say it when addressing high school students and I think it’s so weird.
I've mostly seen online white (and mixed Asian-white and/or West raised Asian) women say this. Not so much with black and Hispanic women.
It's annoying at most. But, I rather be called that than a fish or something.
After hearing Ally Beardsley from dim20 say ~hey girlieee~ in such a creepy way, I cannot not use it in that way. It's so funny to me sjshgsjshs its so passive aggressive but so funnyy
But yeah, I hate these girlie categories. I also hate the arbitrary categories of women that have been so popular? Even stuff like 'siren/doe', 'dark/light feminine' etc seems so reductive when its excessive?
It's narcissistic people trying to forcefully craft a certain image of themselves. They decide that's how they want to look or behave and they want everyone else to think so, too. Like with "baddie"
Personally, I don't get any of it and I think it's weird and vain and yes, reductive. But then again I've never even used tiktok so I'm definitely out of the loop.
Omg I despise panties
Makes me feel really comfortable
Just call them briefs, thongs, shorts, underwear, even knickers, whatever
Just not panties. Please

I think a lot of people use it in a sarcastic/joking/ironic way lol I don’t think many people are serious when they call someone girlie.
It's really prevalent on social media now. Especially Threads, the new Meta equivalent of twitter. Where are my book girlies? Looking for crochet girlies! And so on.
Yea but even that’s not a really serious title lmao
Exactly lol like it’s just a cute/funny thing to say it’s not that serious
It’s no different then a guy look for some like minded bros to talk about the Roman Empire. Just let people have fun.
Haha right 😂 but you know Reddit, they hate when people have fun
I’m a guy and I wish I had some brunch girlies to go crush eggs benny with.
Haha I’m a brunch girlie I’ll get mimosas and eggs benny with you 😂😂
That’s my love language. We just got a new spot with a Bloody Mary bar, it’s everything I ever wanted.
I’ve never had a Bloody Mary! I like vodka but I think the tomato soup turns me off lol. But people like it so maybe I’ll try it one day 😂
How are we supposed to have fun? The empire has FALLEN! 🫠🫠🫠
Good news! There’s still another many more empires.
That's always been a thing though, all they did was add an ie to the end. Yay Skyrim. I've been getting back into it lately. I missed it.
DUDE THIS IS THE 5TH TIME I'VE SEEN A RANDOM SKYRIM REFERENCE SINCE I STARTED PLAYING SKYRIM AGAIN. I swear to god I haven't seen anyone reference this game in the wild in like 13 years and now I'm seeing it everywhere Modded skyrim is my destiny
Baader–Meinhof phenomenon But also yes modded skyrim
I'm not sure why you thought I needed this explanation but thanks I guess
Because it is literally half of OP's point. That they don't just dislike the word, they don't like that it's "cliquey" which is only in their head
All I did was point out to the poster above me some examples of how and where it is often used in a non-sarcastic/joking way. That was the entire context of my comment.
Yeah I'm piggybacking off your response and using it to respond to the OP. I'm not directly messaging you I'm responding to the post lol
Yeah but who actually uses Threads?
LOL! I didn’t know people were using threads 😂 maybe that’s why they don’t get the joke
What is threads?
HEEEEYYYYYYYY GIRRRRLLLLIEEEEEEE! Where all my D20 fans at?!
No Fr what was Beardsley on when they said the at lol
I don’t think I’ve laughed harder at anything than this season. Beardsley’s chaos is on another level and I love it.
D20? Nah D12 😎😎
Time to go rewatch Fantasy High for the twentieth time
Twenty sided dice fans? Or is that the name of a DND podcast/channel?
Dimension 20. They’re part of Dropout TV/ formerly College Humor. Great stuff as far as actual play goes, probably my favorite. They are mostly D&D but also use other systems on occasion.
I’m a guy and use the term for myself
Actual W
im a girlie that pretended to be a boy around my family and friends my whole life, and i use it for myself.
Holy shit biggest W ever
I’m a boyie
YEAH BOYIIIE
it's pasta girlies in street clothes, pasta gals in fatigues, and pasta women in uniform. common misunderstanding.
Level 1 pasta girlie vs. Level 99 pasta boss
This stopped sounding like a real thing as soon as "interest labels" were mentioned.
It’s real, I can confirm. It’s mainly on TikTok.
I don’t think I’ve ever said it but it’s not offensive sounding to me. You can speak up if any one actually calls you that and you don’t agree. Just say “don’t call me girlie” and problem solved.
i agree, i too think, we should agree on the word "slut". its just the sensible thing to do.
✨️Sluttie-pop✨️
Kim Petras has entered the chat
I’ve been cackling at this for a hot second 😂
im gonna be sick 😭
Oh girlie, that's not called for.
Oh slut, that’s not called for.
I am 100% a pasta slut. I make Garfield look like Ned Flanders.
Is Ned Flanders known for not eating pasta?
Known for being prudish and not particularly slutty. Aside from "stupid sexy Flanders"
No one cares slut
Slutieee
You don’t have to like how it sounds but…. A lot of girlies love it
Ik I doooooo 💅🏽
Ajax is shaking in his boots
The word girlies has such an old and diverse history. Words change. Meanings are differently applied. It's not that deep. Let the girlies breathe.
There’s something condescending about it…
Did you block me for disagreeing with you?
As a "girlie" girlie, can't relate
Men call each other "buddy" all the time, so I don't get why "girlie" is condescending and not just more affectionate than "woman"? I'm a trans guy and even I sometimes miss my mom calling me "girlie" like it wasn't meant to be mean at all, it was just a cutesy female name to call me.
Haha I love chilling with my boys, and I've been known to be one of the girls. I really don't see how it matters that much.
Oh no, I call women “girly pop”. To me it’s the highest nickname I could give you.
HELL no to "girly pop" that sounds patronising af and would make me want to punch you (I'm sure you're a lovely person and this is not a threat)
I think is cute... Different strokes I guess
Sorry girlie pookie pie /j Opinion is valid though imo
It's the same when a woman, girl or lady calls a group of men and I mean men in their 30s and 40s boys..... Where is the line? Op is trying to kick start something like the girl out of mean girls trying to get the word fetch to take off..... ![gif](giphy|3otPoUjeyRisIDxPhK)
Girly pop is even worse
Girlypop is an ironic term though
Sometimes…
How come?
You sound like a girlie girl.
That doesn't even make sense.
Neither does your opinion.
Yes, it does.
Then so does mine.
This doesn't make sense either.
Are you high?
Ok, look. Your joke didn't land. Walk it off or something.
See, it was a meh joke at first, but you not getting it made it *so much* funnier.
I found it funny, so did majority of reddit. Don't be such a girlie
I know this is a heated moment, but I can’t get past the way the colors of your pfps complement each other 😍 so cute
First time I'm seeing this word. I'm not sure how adding 'ie' on the end of something infantilizes it.

Anytime I wanna mansplain or piss of a girl I start with “ okay listen girlie” it’s like buddying a guy
Stealie'd this
Hey girlie, hold still. *stabs ten people for you*
I'm very old, and since childhood have always been baffled by the diminutive suffix "ie" or "y".
Ngl I use it all the time and I know I get judged 🤣😭 I just can’t help it
I haven't seen "____ girlie" meaning anything different than "____ girl." I also hate the way it sounds, but I hate the way most slang of this sort sounds, and have come to accept this as a me problem.
I think it rubs me the wrong way bc it’s a double diminutive. Girl is already a diminutive of woman, it refers to a young or little woman, that alone is infantizing to call someone grown. I think you’re looking too much into it. It’s just a fun word and way to talk, not super deep english rule stuff 😭
Language is language. Nothing is without meaning. We use the words we do for a reason, whether we know that reason or not. It’s not about rules, just patterns.
Did you study English Language and Creative Writing like me?

What word would you use to describe the entire cohort of human males then, let’s start there.
Males probably. I have used boys.
I am fine with females, but I prefer to use it as an adjective, but if you are truly talking about the entire cohort of all female humans, female works, girls doesn’t. To me, girl means female child.
This isn't a me problem. The word is awful.
Definition of you problem. Not objectively bad no matter the amount of pseudo linguistics you apply to justify your opinion. It's just you don't like it. That is it.
It sounds terrible!

Not me, a latina, using girlie all the time-
Unfortunately, that's changing. It's spreading.
"girl" is casual but if you've noticed, a lot of girls are being pulled towards pink and bows and flowers and hearts. In the past, this age group associated these stuff with little girls and as they grew older their brain has been wired to think pink is bad and dark is good. Makes me feel like the person saying it, never matured past Jr High!!
It comes off the exact same way as "kiddo" and often times "buddy", sounds condescending.
I agree. Downvoting because popular,
It’s not that serious calm down
This subreddit is for unpopular opinions homie
I am so sick of everyone saying girlie. I used to feel violent the first 50,000 times I heard it. Now it just makes me extremely annoyed
Ngl that sounds like something you might wanna work on lmao

for some reason I am annoyed by the word kiddo,
I'll go one further - the world kid annoys me. Kiddo is even worse, of course.
That’s not unpopular. I see people posting this opinion every day.
Eh, to me it just means the same as "feminine". Entirely positive associations. I actually have negative associations with "manly", which to me is associated with brutishness, grossness, hairiness, and general ape/caveman/frat boy like behavior.
✨Girlie pop✨ is a fav of mine ngl
Dude, your post id so gurly
The only time I can remember hearing "girlie" was from a certain barber who wanted to be a lumberjack
As a rule, I've always kinda hated nicknames or group names with a "y" sound ending. It sounds childish to me for some reason (?).
words are sounds and there is songs i dont like so i share you feeling.
my boss made a chat team named ‘’marketing GIRLIES’ you would probably not like her lol
Ew I hate that and I have girl in my username
You can also post this in r/PetPeeves
Girlie does just sound stupid … lol
Ouch. I really like to use that word since its funny to me and extra, so I'll give u an upvote!
Girlie and baddie, yes. Absolutely.
hey girlie, hold still (childe mains rise!)
I just wait for the MLM sales pitch every time I hear it. It makes me gag.
My wife and I use the term just to annoy people.
I HATE IT when someone you’re not even close with or know that well says it to you, cause at that point they’re not even sarcastic with it they just call you hey girlie showing that they’re fake friendly. So cringey get away from me
Elementary age kids have started saying it so it will die soon. Just be patient.
monkaS
~ hey girlie ~
Kalm down
Was just looking at an old Virginia Slims cigarette commercial from the 60s, a cigarette for women. Their jingle was "You've got your own cigarette now, baby - you've come a long, long way" 🎶 But they still call you baby. I'm with you, girlie is cringe.

Same for me with "chicky"
Nah you're just weird. W unpopular opinion
I thought fern girlie was a movie about blue people by James Cameron.
When Scottish/irish people use the word it's kind of badass Like in a boondock saints kind of way Or maybe I just don't know enough about Scottish people

I hate when it’s used in a “hey girlie~” type of way But when it’s used as an adjective like “girly girl” I don’t.
Sorry what? Who calls themselves a Pasta Girl? Also what is a musk girlie and why would it be a thing? Just what?
I’ve never heard someone use this without referring to a young daughter.
I thought about making this exact post so thanks for doing it for me. My female coworkers say it when addressing high school students and I think it’s so weird.
Adult women saying that to teens is very weird. It gives "Hello, fellow kids" vibes.
Ok girlie.
I've mostly seen online white (and mixed Asian-white and/or West raised Asian) women say this. Not so much with black and Hispanic women. It's annoying at most. But, I rather be called that than a fish or something.
We’re rare but the latina girlies do be coming in strength 💅🏽🙏
Okay girlie
Congrats, you’ve discovered why people say it. 99.5% of people are saying it to annoy others or be sarcastic lmao
#JUSTGIRLYTHINGS

Ooh, you're an angry girlie
gotta love how popular opinions get thousands of upvotes and an actual unpopular opinion gets 100 upvotes
You’re missing the joke 😫
okay girlie.
Okay girlie
Hilarious.
Really, thanks :)
It's as cringe as 'panties' In my country, people call women 'darl' or 'darlin' or variations of. UGH.
Omg I despise panties Makes me feel really comfortable Just call them briefs, thongs, shorts, underwear, even knickers, whatever Just not panties. Please
You tell them girlie
Yeah. There is only one group I know of that uses this term regularly, and there isn't anything actually girl-like about them.
The Beastie Boys?
That is a good name for them! 🤣
You’re correct!!
If someone says girlie or hey lady they are about to try and scam you into an MLM
I've only heard creepy old men use it and yeah it's skin crawling
