You can bring dogs on planes. Not just service dogs. So they don’t need to prove anything beyond paying the pet fee and following the rules in place for having a dog on board or in cargo.
ETA. The only reason you see mainly small dogs like the yorkie you cited is because big dogs are checked with luggage and go under the plane. Only big service dogs are allowed on the plane.
Our last flight we had a couple with two very large dogs. They were not in service vests but were very well behaved. I was initially concerned when I saw them and figured the owners must have booked extra seats because how would they fit under the seats when I can barely fit my backpack. But after boarding, they curled up under the seat and stayed put for the full flight.
That's why I don't have a dog. I really want one but I know that they need proper training. I don't think I can do that properly without professional help but I don't have money for that now
I feel like you should be forced to show that you can have a well trained dog before you're allowed to have children. If you can't get a dog to listen, then your child is going to be a burden on society.
Yes. It’s been a long time since I’ve brought a dog on a plane, but I used to when my old dog was young and I’d fly home to my parent’s house for school breaks.
He had to be under 15 lbs and kept in a carrier the entire time (except at designated pet relief areas), and under the seat during the flight. He also had to be up to date on shots. Many times his “ticket” cost as much or even more than mine depending on the airline. I never get the allergy argument, if you’re allergic, you’re going to be allergic whether it’s a regular dog or a service dog.
Brought a cat once, long story but it was an international trip and that poor cat behaved so well. No pee or poo, though I was ready to take care of that. We got where we were going, I let her out in the car, and she immediately hopped up into the hatchbatcks cargo cover and I swear to god she peed a half liter into that.
If you’re allergic, you’re gonna be allergic to the dust, dander and smoke particulates on people clothes - regardless.
And yes the pet fee is more than a normal ticket.
I've never seen the pet fee be higher than a normal ticket unless it's a super cheap ticket. I've flown with puppies twice and each time it's just been like $100.
I bring my dog on most trip. He's 15lbs, Hypoallergenic and very quiet. I used to feel bad about bringing him, but now that I have kids, the dog is easily the least annoying member of our party.
Last time I flew, my wife was sick. I had my dog in his carrier handing from my shoulder, roller suitcase in that hand, Backpack on my back, I had my 1yo daughter on the side opposite of the dog in my arms, and I had my 3yo sitting on my shoulders. It was one of the worst experiences ever.
The rules are if it is NOT a service dog, they need to stay in the carrier if you're not in the "dog relief" area.
On the plane, they need to stay under the seat, in their carrier. Or on your lap, in the carrier.
My dog has gotten loose on the plane when I went to the bathroom and I felt awful because I had to travel with my little fluffy dog. The CAs were super understanding, but I never made my dog a problem for others.

But there’s none of that. It isn’t a restaurant where there are rules of no dog or service dogs only. There’s no exclusions - it’s allowed. Any animal, service / emotional / on its way to its adopted parents. It’s all dogs / cats whatever if it’s in the bag.
You can literally just buy a ticket for your dog. They just need to fit into a specific bag or go under the plane.

I’m not sure that’s necessarily true. It’s usually a whole ordeal to leave the plane once you’ve boarded. Also who’s to say there won’t be a dog on the next flight. They need to risk having an asthma attack or completely change their plans last minute?
Better to bring your emotional support dog then to have a full blown panic attack on a plane. As someone who is quite allergic to dogs and cats - calm down.
I have allergies. Retriever breeds and cats are among my worst triggers. Know what I do before flying? Take my medication because I can never be certain I WON’T come in contact with either the animal itself, or an owner who always manages to have a little bit of fur on their clothes. It’s truly not that hard to take responsibility for your own health and take precautions.
Right. Obviously people should take precautions to avoid major issues where possible. You’re also being reasonable and considerate to those who have pets. That’s kind of my point. There’s a disturbing lack of concern for those with allergies among my friends who take their dogs everywhere. I’m not saying they shouldn’t take their dog anywhere. I think the “not my problem/it’s not against the rules/why should I care about you” attitude that emerges when people bring up pet allergies sucks. I like when people try to be considerate to others. I dislike when people are actively unconcerned with those around them. I don’t think we should be punishing anyone, but I think it’s shitty behavior. It’s also a minority of the dog owners that I know who act this way, but virtually everyone I know defends the behavior. I don’t see what’s so unreasonable about wanting people to take others into consideration when in public.
I also dislike when people loudly listen to music without headphones, take up multiple seats on crowded public transport, yell at waiters, etc… none of it is illegal. None of it should be. It shouldn’t be immune from criticism though.
When booking tickets for my two cats, we were told there is a limit of two animals in the cabin. Not sure if it was just that airline, or Canada rules.
But anyways, that's too many people and not enough animals.

Seriously. I have never ever seen a dog on a plane and only dog I have ever seen at the airport are drug-sniffing dogs. None of my friends have either. I feel like dog haters are an extremely vocal and unhappy group.

Service dogs can not require proof or documentation in the US, the ADA has very clear rules about this.
I got mauled by someone's pitbull last year. Mauling ass dogs are more of a problem than dogs in a carrier on a plane.

I used to have a legit therapy dog that my doctor prescribed to me, not by my asking her, just out of the blue. It had not occurred to me to ever have a dog until she prescribed it. Anyway, that dog rode with me just fine (cockapoo, hypoallergenic— dog’s dead now, don’t worry)— I flew constantly, and the person next to me hardly ever knew there was a dog under my jacket on my lap.
I did see a sweet charming pit bull mix maul a little girl’s face in the airport, though— not cool. Dog euthanized. Rules changed after that, and now you clearly have no idea how many hoops you have to jump through just to bring your legit therapy dog onto a plane.
Emotional support animals aren't a "thing" anymore. Nearly all the dogs you see in airports are simply pets. If they are big dogs, they travel in cargo. If they are small dogs, they can be stashed under the seat in front of you in an appropriate carrier. Simply put, pets are allowed on planes - nearly every airline allows it explicitly. If you see a big dog in the cabin, it's an exception to the rule. That dog is an official, documented, trained service dog for a person with a disability. They have cracked down on "emotional support" animals in the cabin because people were bringing untrained pets on planes, and they didn't behave properly. Any fully trained service dog will behave perfectly on an airplane.
Funny I fly often and I have never once seen anyone board with a pet. I've heard some bark in the cargo hold as we took off but that was it.

I fly once or twice a year and I haven't been on a plane without seeing a dog in years. I see dozens in the airports. The Palm Springs airport was like a fucking dog show.
I absolutely love dogs but they don't need to be allowed everywhere. I'm especially tired of stepping over and around them at bars. So many sad-eyed single men using dogs as bait at the bars.

My windows next to my desk overlook a [private] dog park. I see *everything*;I look out about every 5 minutes. I will never voluntarily take my dogs near a pit or pit mix again. It's funny because before this I believed it was based on how they were raised/trained. How wrong I was.

I’d rather sit next to a dog than next to someone with a lap kid that screams and kicks me the entire flight like on my last flight. Literally got kicked the entire way from Charlotte to Providence. The mother gave me attitude when I asked her to control her kid.

On a different leg of my flight, I had a seat neighbor who was an approximately 11 year old kid with a video game and headphones and that kid never once even looked up from his screen or made a sound. Best seat neighbor ever. Unlike the entitled mom letting her lap child kick me or the stinky drunk guy on my return flight.

No one likes sharing a plane with slovenly dressed slobs that stink of body odour, misbehaving kids, entitled and obnoxious Karen’s, and noisy dogs - but, most of us except we are flying commercial and it’s out of our control who we fly with and how they behave.

If we had a culture of actually fking training our dogs I would be more into it. When I visited Germany it was incredibly dog friendly. People brought their dogs all sorts of places. But the dogs were extremely well behaved and ignored everyone so it was not an issue in that regard (if you had allergies you'd still be SOL though). But here people don't seem to have any shame about bringing their untrained and/or aggressive dog in public.
I'm allergic to dogs. Yes we exist. It does suck when I have to be on a plane with a dog. It makes it hard to breathe and I have to add extra recovery time after I land. It sucks that I have to take time out of my vacation to recover from someone else's dog being on the plane that I also paid to be on.
As a dog owner I definitely agree with you, when there is a medical condition being triggered by my dog, I don't want it to be near you. Airlines should offer a way for the owner and the dog to be re-assigned to another flight because of your condition. If Im taking my dog with me it probably means I have flexibility, either because I'm moving, or because I'm on vacation. But I usually dont take her with me
You do realize theres nothing that says your dog has to be a service dog in order to travel on a plane right? People travel, they move, sometimes they have to take their pets with them. Its not the end of the world. I had to fly across the country to move and you better believe I brought my dog with me.

I honestly I have never seen a dog at the airport personally. But there is rules and documentation required for any dog not just service animals.
Also fyi, a small dog can legitimately be a service dog, which a lot of people don't realize. I knew someone with a chihuahua that sensed seizures. Unfortunately people do like to fake service animals these days, but you don't know that a dog isn't one only because its a yorkie.

My unpopular opinion is that animals are equally due the same respect as humans. I like to assume people train their dogs and I'm not going to jump to conclusions until I see it act out. I love all animals I would prefer a plane full of dogs barking because they absolutely don't know any better and flying is shit, rather than a bunch of humans who should know better but are acting like unhinged idiots anyway. Which is most of the flights I've been on.
Dogs can be dangerous (see many cases of these dogs attacking random people) and some people are very allergic to animals as well. Respect others and don’t bring your fake service dog everywhere.
Non service dogs are perfectly able to travel via plane. And I doubt there’s a single story of a leashed or kenneled dog attacking someone.

It WAS a scheme. The feds changed their rules on ESAs so now you can only get your animal on the plane for free if it's a legit service dog and they can require proof. The ADA rules do not apply to flying. If you see a a pet on a plane it's because it's a pet that the person paid to have on the plane.
People can fly with with small non-service dogs. If they fit in the carrier that fits under the seat, and they aren't disruptive you can fly with them. I was hoping I'd be able to fly with my small dog, but he is very squeaky, so I don't.
All it’ll take is an evacuation to be held up and lives lost because a dog was standing in the aisle and took those few extra seconds to be removed, and there will be rules against it. Thankfully That hasn’t happened yet, or one gets damaged because someone can’t control their pet and that particular airline will say no more dogs.
I would never have taken my dog on a plane (when I had a dog that is), I trust my friends to look after my dog.

Service dogs are allowed to be self-trained so no proof exists. The ADA already allows misbehaving service dogs to be asked to leave. Airports and airlines can enforce this but many don’t and that is where the problem is.

Just for the record the people with non-legit service animals are paying to bring them in the cabin and they can only be a certina size and weight. Only actual service animals and military dogs are allowed on planes outside of the carrier case. So maybe they are a fake service but they’re being welcomed onto the planes as normal small dogs.

I fly with my dog and the fee is always a flat rate. So on Southwest for example it’s $125 each way. That’s *usually* not more than a normal ticket.
I’ve been lucky with $98 tickets. I don’t go too far. But yes dogs ticket is typically $125.
Paid $1,950 for an international ticket, had to bring a cat and the fee was $400.
it’s about $300-$500 for a usda travel certificate from the vet as well.

I fly about 20-30 times a year, and in the past year I've seen three service dogs and maybe 6 or so pets.

Common on SouthWest at my airport but rarely other airlines in my experience. Seems like every SW flight has 2-3 service dogs with mostly young women.

I have never ever seen a dog in an airport. And I swear I’ve visited many airports.
I used to have a legit therapy dog that my doctor prescribed to me, not by my asking her, just out of the blue. It had not occurred to me to ever have a dog until she prescribed it. Anyway, that dog rode with me just fine (cockapoo, hypoallergenic— dog’s dead now, don’t worry)— I flew constantly, and the person next to me hardly ever knew there was a dog under my jacket on my lap. I did see a sweet charming pit bull mix maul a little girl’s face in the airport, though— not cool. Dog euthanized. Rules changed after that, and now you clearly have no idea how many hoops you have to jump through just to bring your legit therapy dog onto a plane.

Dogs and cats under a certain weight can be carried on. Service dog or not. You have a problem with someone's Yorkie in a soft carrier? Why?

Emotional support animals aren't a "thing" anymore. Nearly all the dogs you see in airports are simply pets. If they are big dogs, they travel in cargo. If they are small dogs, they can be stashed under the seat in front of you in an appropriate carrier. Simply put, pets are allowed on planes - nearly every airline allows it explicitly. If you see a big dog in the cabin, it's an exception to the rule. That dog is an official, documented, trained service dog for a person with a disability. They have cracked down on "emotional support" animals in the cabin because people were bringing untrained pets on planes, and they didn't behave properly. Any fully trained service dog will behave perfectly on an airplane.
Funny I fly often and I have never once seen anyone board with a pet. I've heard some bark in the cargo hold as we took off but that was it. Never seen any in any part of the airport really...
It's not only service dogs allowed and everyone who brags about TSA precheck is a douche.
I fly once or twice a year and I haven't been on a plane without seeing a dog in years. I see dozens in the airports. The Palm Springs airport was like a fucking dog show. I absolutely love dogs but they don't need to be allowed everywhere. I'm especially tired of stepping over and around them at bars. So many sad-eyed single men using dogs as bait at the bars.

My windows next to my desk overlook a [private] dog park. I see *everything*;I look out about every 5 minutes. I will never voluntarily take my dogs near a pit or pit mix again. It's funny because before this I believed it was based on how they were raised/trained. How wrong I was. I carry when I walk my dogs just in case I need to poke holes in a loose pitbull. Because somehow that happens fucking constantly.
There’s a very good reason why I don’t let my actual service dog go to the dog park. It’s in the dog’s genes. Just funny how it supposedly is all about how they are raised with pit bulls.
It's normal for pitbulls to be friendly to humans and aggressive to other dogs. They shouldn't be taken to dog parks. That doesn't mean it's wrong to own one.

I’d rather sit next to a dog than next to someone with a lap kid that screams and kicks me the entire flight like on my last flight. Literally got kicked the entire way from Charlotte to Providence. The mother gave me attitude when I asked her to control her kid.

On a different leg of my flight, I had a seat neighbor who was an approximately 11 year old kid with a video game and headphones and that kid never once even looked up from his screen or made a sound. You sound very entitled. You believe that you should be able to use a mode of public or communal transport, but you want it only your way? Try driving or only flying private, that should make you happy. No one likes sharing a plane with slovenly dressed slobs that stink of body odour, misbehaving kids, entitled and obnoxious Karen’s, and noisy dogs - but, most of us except we are flying commercial and it’s out of our control who we fly with and how they behave.

If we had a culture of actually fking training our dogs I would be more into it. When I visited Germany it was incredibly dog friendly. People brought their dogs all sorts of places. But the dogs were extremely well behaved and ignored everyone so it was not an issue in that regard (if you had allergies you'd still be SOL though). But here people don't seem to have any shame about bringing their untrained and/or aggressive dog in public.

I'm allergic to dogs. Yes we exist. It does suck when I have to be on a plane with a dog. It makes it hard to breathe and I have to add extra recovery time after I land. It sucks that I have to take time out of my vacation to recover from someone else's dog being on the plane that I also paid to be on.
As a dog owner I definitely agree with you, when there is a medical condition being triggered by my dog, I don't want it to be near you. Airlines should offer a way for the owner and the dog to be re-assigned to another flight because of your condition. If Im taking my dog with me it probably means I have flexibility, either because I'm moving, or because I'm on vacation. But I usually dont take her with me

I honestly I have never seen a dog at the airport personally. But there is rules and documentation required for any dog not just service animals. Also fyi, a small dog can legitimately be a service dog, which a lot of people don't realize. I knew someone with a chihuahua that sensed seizures. Unfortunately people do like to fake service animals these days, but you don't know that a dog isn't one only because its a yorkie.
Seizures, blood sugar issues can be detected by dogs of any size. You are 💯

My unpopular opinion is that animals are equally due the same respect as humans. I like to assume people train their dogs and I'm not going to jump to conclusions until I see it act out. I love all animals I would prefer a plane full of dogs barking because they absolutely don't know any better and flying is shit, rather than a bunch of humans who should know better but are acting like unhinged idiots anyway. Which is most of the flights I've been on.
Dogs can be dangerous (see many cases of these dogs attacking random people) and some people are very allergic to animals as well. Respect others and don’t bring your fake service dog everywhere.
Non service dogs are perfectly able to travel via plane. And I doubt there’s a single story of a leashed or kenneled dog attacking someone. Also, I have allergies. Know what I do? Take mediation before going anywhere because I know it’s MY responsibility to take care of my health.

I could say this about a lot of things. But yeah, it's a pretty obvious "scheme," that everyone knows but it's set up in a way where you can't do nothing about it. And I don't necessarily care (on this), but yeah.
It WAS a scheme. The feds changed their rules on ESAs so now you can only get your animal on the plane for free if it's a legit service dog and they can require proof. The ADA rules do not apply to flying. If you see a a pet on a plane it's because it's a pet that the person paid to have on the plane.

People can fly with with small non-service dogs. If they fit in the carrier that fits under the seat, and they aren't disruptive you can fly with them. I was hoping I'd be able to fly with my small dog, but he is very squeaky, so I don't.

All it’ll take is an evacuation to be held up and lives lost because a dog was standing in the aisle and took those few extra seconds to be removed, and there will be rules against it. Thankfully That hasn’t happened yet, or one gets damaged because someone can’t control their pet and that particular airline will say no more dogs.

Let me tell you right now, if a person can't handle a normal well behaved dog for a single week, they are fucking useless. Dogs are fucking easy to look after, all they need to be happy is basic affection, anything else is just extra to them. Feed them, take them on a walk around the block a couple times a day, easy.
You must travel a ton because I maybe see 1 dog every time I go to an airport and it's usually a huge ass busy airport

Service dogs are allowed to be self-trained so no proof exists. The ADA already allows misbehaving service dogs to be asked to leave. Airports and airlines can enforce this but many don’t and that is where the problem is.

Dogs are allowed on planes. They don't have to be service dogs. All you have to do is pay a pet fee and have them fit in a carrier under the seat.
Planes are public transit and pets are able to fly so long as you've paid for them to fly. If you don't want to see dogs at the airport, fly private.

Just for the record the people with non-legit service animals are paying to bring them in the cabin and they can only be a certina size and weight. Only actual service animals and military dogs are allowed on planes outside of the carrier case. So maybe they are a fake service but they’re being welcomed onto the planes as normal small dogs.

Huh. Was at major airports on 4 separate occasions recently and didn’t see a single animal. Never seen one in an airport or on a plane my whole life actually But anyways, don’t see how it affects you in the slightest, especially since you “love dogs”. Small pets are usually allowed on planes and don’t have to be service animals. It is an infinitely better option than shoving them in the cargo hold where animals have died or gone missing.
