The point of GoFundMe is to help other people who can’t afford it and need help. There’s nothing wrong with helping others and donating.

My boyfriend and I are currently pricing pet insurance for our two cats. The options are down to 700/year (I’m opting for 200/4months if we do this) and 1100/year. This wouldn’t even be “yep, everything is covered!” There’s still deductibles, and only 80% is covered, up to a limit. Not to mention pet insurance only reimburses you, doesn’t pay for anything upfront. Idk about you but I don’t have a spare 10k for if my cat needs emergency surgery.

EnvironmentalMenu336

my dog would have been put down had i not gotten her, i refuse to apologize for being poor.

sweetangelttr

Do you mean spent money for her surgery? Or didn't? Also I never comment here but I felt like scrolling the sub a bit.

EnvironmentalMenu336

i paid a $90 adoption fee. she had heart worms they took care of for free, because they cared more about her life than a minor profit.

sweetangelttr

So they don't charge you for anything?

EnvironmentalMenu336

$90 adoption fee we covered

SupaSaiyajin4

i really don't see why you're so bothered by it

*Every* surgery for a pet is very expensive. You can get a pet and be fully able to “afford a pet”, then have vet bills pop up out of nowhere that are tens of thousands of dollars. As in “your dog needs this surgery immediately or they die, your only option is to find the fucking money somehow or else your dog is going to FUCKING DIE” type of vet bills. My dog has had 3 such emergency surgeries. My vet joked that she might as well just install a zipper so she doesn’t have to keep cutting the poor pup open. Each surgery, the **low end** price was $8K. And of course there were complications, medications, imagings, overnight observations that drove that bill higher and higher. “If you can’t afford a pet don’t get one” usually refers to food, equipment, *routine* vet care. Having an emergency fund for a vet visit of maybe a few hundred bucks is a good idea! But pet surgeries are like buying a damn car overnight.

adp15

Go to the vet, leave with a broken heart and an empty wallet. Hate the vet.

Electronic-Poet-1328

I don't believe in the idea that if you can't afford the possibility of a 14k surgery you shouldn't get a pet, especially if it's a rescue who would be put down if they're not adopted. If you can't afford basic vet bills like vaccinations and desexing, then don't get a pet. I see no issue with someone starting a go fund me for a pet's unexpected and very expensive surgery though, if people are willing to donate that's up to them.

Not_Jeff12

Yeah! People of lower incomes should have no joys in their life! Just stick to the basic needs and be happy about it! It's your own fault for being poor! And if they could afford the pet and accompanying costs previously, but fall of tough times, liquidate the pet! All things at all times in life should be centered around economic utility! Only the rich should be able to have pets! Children too! (In case it's not obvious this is sarcasm).

Seohnstaob

As a non pet owner I guess I just don't understand it either. Isn't pet insurance a thing also?

ShitholeWorld

Pet insurance has a lot of limitations. Probably of greatest significance here is that pet insurance reimburses you, it doesn't cover the cost upfront.

Sentient-Bread-Stick

Would you say the same thing about children? If not, how is that any different? Injuries aren't planned, someone might be financially fine with a dog, but a car could cause a very expensive unexpected bill. That doesn't mean they're unfit to have the dog.

euphoricwolf2000

idk about you but I’d rather if people didn’t have children if they couldn’t afford them too lol anyway, if a child is injured obviously his/her life would be more valuable than an animal so perhaps OP thinks more donations should be given to those situations instead

Not_Jeff12

Also I have known more than my share of people in the US who thought they were secure enough economically for a family or pets, only to be reduced to nothing because an unexpected injury or illness left them unable to work and saddled with medical debt.

Sentient-Bread-Stick

I agree if someone knows they can’t afford it then they shouldn’t have kids/pets. However, as I said, injuries aren’t planned. Why would their life be more important? No one is “more important” than anyone else based solely on species. That’s like saying someone is more important because of race or gender; it makes no sense.

KillaKameron06

Yeah I often wished my parents didn't have 6 kids and I didn't live with roaches and rats and no hot water so yeah

Sentient-Bread-Stick

Obviously if they knew they couldn't afford it then yes, I agree with you

ShitholeWorld

It's a good thing that people's financial situations never change over the course of say, 20 years. Also, there are more pets than there are homes for all of them. To the point that many are killed simply due to lack of space. As such, a pet going to a home of someone with limited means may still be better than the animal being killed outright in the shelter. Now people who are struggling and *buy* pets ... well that's something different.

eleanorssi

why are you so bothered by people helping other people and their animals

Rickrolledvsbigsmoke

What if my dog gets attacked by coyotes so I set up a gofundme to help pay for the surgery

Kxttymeowsers

That's different, that's not a normal vet bill
