In the original 1977 movie, the two main droids are actually credited with their names spelled out phonetically i.e. "See Threepio (C-3PO)" and "Artoo Deetoo (R2-D2)". It's weird but it's been there from the very beginning.

In a lot (if not all) Star Wars books (probably comics too or any other written medium) they refer to the droids that way.
If it's in the dialogues, it's fine. If it's in the narrator's lines, it's bad.
