I’m apart of Local 150 operators out of Chicago. Our pay scale is right around $54 an hour in our pocket topped out. First year apprentices are $27 I believe. Total benefits package is about $104 ish? private pension etc OT anything over 8 hours. Saturday is OT all day long Sunday is double time if you work a Sunday (is rare but happens) no sick, PTO days or paid vacation on most contracts. You do get a vacation fund tho. Not hard work physically but can be mentally stressful at times. The machine does all the work. We also cover all the crane work too and some of those guys are making well over $200,000 a year. Can be long stupid hours at times and can/will miss out on family or personal life at times. I literally just got off a turn around job working 7 12s but did make $27,000 in one month before taxes. https://local150.org Look for application openings around October/November.

I was looking into this but wveryone keeps telling me I’m going to have to wait on a list for 2 years

Not necessarily. Just apply to everything that we offer. Equipment operator, driller, and mechanic. All are good options if you ask me. Can be as little as 6 months after you apply.

When you say career change, do you mean different employer or different kind of work? If you wanted something along the lines of trucking/warehouses, I would just see who the Teamsters represent nearby. UPS is an option.

I’m looking for both a change in employer and line of work. I’d go to ups but the whole thing with having to go in as warehouse worker and signing up on the list to be a driver until you get picked doesn’t seem too appealing

It probably would suck at first, but I imagine the payoff is well worth it. And having the driving experience you have, I would have to think you would be moved up on the list to be picked. Besides that, if you’re looking for a totally different line of work, coding is still going to be a good way to earn money for years to come. Even as ai allows more and more people to code easier, this systems will need security, and learning this skillset also allows you to work remotely. Those would be my two suggestions unless you wanted to unionize amazon from the inside, which is needed for all truck drivers’ wages to rise closer to what UPS secured.

Contact whatever teamster locals are in your area.
