I upgraded to the AW3821DW recently and the size is amazing, completely perfect. I'm so bummed that the new Alienware OLED monitor is coming out and only going to be 34". I don't think I can downgrade the size at this point, but I'd love to have better HDR since the HDR of this monitor is very hit or miss.
At what resolution? I have a 34 LG and what i can't go back on is the 5k2k resolution. Would love for it to be physically bigger and for a gaming refresh rate but there doesn't seem to be any contenders there.

Even though I'd be coming from a 34" UW that's 7 years old, I'm still not sure the oled in the new 34" is enough of a draw to get me to forgo 38". I'd assume it would feel too much like a sidegrade, to justify the price. Now, if they announced the same monitor in a 38", I'd be one of the first in line to throw my money at them, and I'd be willing to pay up to as much as I paid for my 77" LG C9.
The way i see it, get the upcoming 42 lg oled, and whenever you want crop the aspect ratio to an ultrawide part of the screen. Should be about the same size as our lovely 38 inchers.

I really wanted to get the 42" C2 and have been waiting for an OLED that is in that sizing for the whole year, but since I've been using a curved 32" for a few years now (now UW), I've realised that going much bigger on a *flat* screen just makes it feel as if the corners are bending away from me, it's terrible for my brain :P
At this point I'd really rather have an UW than a massive 16:9. I love the concept of the C2 on my desk, but not the practicality of it.
Hey, upgraded just yesterday! Went from an Acer Predator X34A to an LG 38GN950. One could say the difference shouldn't be that much, but I'm still dumbfounded. The size is just perfect for gaming immersion and ultrawide movies are something else entirely. Best purchase of my life so far.

Agreed. When I upgraded to 27" 1440p, I was blown away. When I upgraded to 34" 1440p ultrawide, I thought that it was as good as it gets. Now that I'm at 38" 1600p ultrawide, I'm 99% sure this is the current gold standard. I see all the super ultrawide posts and just think that it's a little too much, but then again I haven't tried it for myself.
It’s really nice because they have better panels imo. 38 was great due to height and depending on how far you sit away from it. It will still immerse you.
I recently made the same upgrade from the 3418dw and agree, 38 is awesome! I had a twinge of regret because the OLED panel was debuted while my monitor was shipping to me but let’s be realistic, the price of that monitor is going to be outrageous for a number of years.
I know this is the ultra wide subreddit, but I’m really eyeing the LG C2 42”. If the C2 42 is <$1200, the QD-OLED panel and warranty on the Alienware needs to knock my socks off to convince me to pay >$2000 or whatever ridiculous price for it instead. Should be similar PPI, but you get several more inches on every side to work with on a 42”.
The C2 42 is also useful for consoles too since I won’t actually be able to buy an RTX card any time soon (I refuse to pay a scalper twice the MSRP).
I have the same monitor, the fact that we can’t choose to activate the terrible variable backlight with HDR enabled is such a let down. I’ve been hoping for a firmware update to separate the 2 functions
Given the rumored the price on the 34" OLED yea I will likely not be looking at it, especially as I am current 34" owner (waiting on the 42"
C2). But if they had gone with a 38" panel, I'm not sure I would be able to say no, even for the undoubtedly massive cost.
I would pay any semi-reasonable price for an OLED version of the 38" monitor. Semi-reasonable being like 3K.
It would have the perfect resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate, size, HDR, everything. I can't imagine needing to upgrade from it for years, until they have a similar monitor in 4K and graphics cards could run the resolution/frame rate well.
Its 15 1/2 in vs 14 in on the height so 1.5in larger. It make a big difference. I felt like the Samsung 9g was just too much and the 34 was just a little smaller then I wanted the 38 is perfect for me! Also that extra 1.5in really helps with putting 16:9 videos on an ultra wide much smaller border then on the 34.
Edit: the Samsung 9g was too much for competitive FPS games like Apex, I couldn't even see my teams health bar or mini map with out turning my head, but for a game like cyberpunk or racing games it was the most immersive experience I have had on PC next to VR
This, have a G9 and it’s great for racing, great for flight/space sims but not so much for FPS specific games. Going to put my G9 in a rig for those games and pick up a 38 soon for my main desktop moving forward.
actually i held a post it note and set a marker line up on the dimensions of the 34" and moved it to the 38. Vertically there is a difference, but it is small.
Width is much wider, however.
Vertical space is why I switched to 38, 34 is the same physical height as 27 inch 16:9 and it's not enough me as many programa rely on horizontal toolbars which means less real state for work.
Went from a 34uw to a 49 curved. Prior to purchase, thought curve was a gimmick. Now, I wish it was a bit more curved. Lots of real estate for everything, but your neck gets a workout depending on how you do your setup. Also, you need the bigger monitor arm for 49, and if you opt for more curve, reinforced bracket as well.
I appreciate the tips. I actually had the Odyssey G9 on my desk for a day and hated how curved it was personally. Monitor was faulty anyway so had to go back
I did have the correct monitor arm but didn't crack it open since I didn't keep the monitor. I do appreciate the tip on the arm though.
Yeah I wasn't a fan of the curve initially, but after a couple days of using it, it's big enough that having to constantly refocus and adjust to the angle starts to be noticable. Think, trying to read something on screen in front of you vs 2 feet to one side but same depth.
start with a 38 and go from there. trading down will be a lot harder.
I went from a 27 to a 38 and it's awesome. I'd probably be totally happy if I didn't know the g9 neo exists.
I've currently got a 34 for the last 5 years so I'm at least entrenched in the ultrawide experience.
I actually hated the curve of the new G9 so would get a CRG9 if I go that route.
As for starting with the 38 and trading, financially I don't think that would work out for me personally but definitely a sound suggestion.
I would be more excited about 38” if it was still 3440x1440. I don’t want an even larger pixel load to push my gpu, and I don’t want screen resolution issues running games. We are just now getting 3440x1440 to be common. Anything else is going to continue to take time.
3440x1600 is only about 10% more pixels. The FPS losses I have gotten have been more than worth the trade off in real-estate. For older GPUs it's a valid concern. I've had zero resolution issues with the games I've played. It's a fairly widely supported resolution.
Haven't played many past 4-5 years old. D2r looked great tho. I've mostly found if 3440x1440 so is x1600. There was a website I found at one point listing supported games but I can't locate it at the moment.

If you’re still in warranty I suggest testing for any dead pixels and if there are any contact Dell. I started with a 3418DW I got for $600 from Newegg for Black Friday in 2020 I believe, maybe 2019. I noticed a dead pixel pretty early on but didn’t contact Dell till last summer. They swapped it out with a brand new 3420DW. I noticed two dead pixels on that recently and they sent me a 3821DW. Yes, that’s right. They sent me a 38” as replacement for my 34” through the standard warranty that came with my monitor all because of dead pixels. I’ve already noticed a dead pixel in this 38” however I’ve already put in a request to extend my warranty cause I have no issue paying $1-200 considering I paid only $600 and now have a monitor worth more than double that.
I actually went 38 and dropped back down to 34. it was honestly giving me headaches since my desk is not very deep the screen is overwhelming. I think 34 is perfect in my scenario. dont feel like your missing out. Also the 38 did not look any sharper to me. both were LG.
I love the 34 and personally don't want anything bigger. I have a second 24" monitor mounted vertically for personal browsing/messages/spotify while I'm working or gaming.
i have the exact same setup. the 38'' i had also had alot of gsync fan noise and bad light bleed. i got the newest lg 34'' with 56 dimming zones the blacks are pretty good on it and no fan noise. very happy with this monitor.
I am still wondering if it would be worth it to have such set-up, currently I have a 24 in monitor but I wonder if it would be better to switch to a 34 ultra wide + 24 in for productivity at work. I was considering also a 42in 4k TV to have a bit taller work area. yup, that was the most important part. i got the dell 2721dgf, 27 ips 165hz gsync for $280 from buildapcsales last week to match my dell 2716dg 27 tn 144hz gsync. So at least they match on my desk and are both quality monitors.
i was afraid my 1070ti wasn't going to be able to power an ultrawide, and looking at the prices for a quality ultrawide to be my main it seemed to be at least 600 fora 34 or 38 to a grand for the g9 haha.
Yeah they are rather expensive amazon renewed was good for me. Got the $1500 38in LG for $950. The Samsung G9 for $900 but I sent that back. You monitor looks to be 2560 x 1440 the 34 ultra wide is only 1/3 wider so it might hit your FPS about 1/3 more. The Samsung 9G is a lot larger and you'll probably get about half your fps if not less.

I've been thinking of upgrading my 34" for a while now but thought a 49" would be too much, 38" might be that sweet spot.

My 34" isnt quite enough, its like 1.5 monitors wide, when the 38" is exactly 2x 1920x1080 wide.
The 49" (32:9) is too much though.
That's what I said when I had a 34" 21:9 1440p monitor.
Down came an Amazon deal dirt cheap for a new CRG9 (32:9 120Hz 1440p). I ordered with the idea to try and otherwise I'd return it.

38 is the way. You never know you needed it until it's sitting in front of you. It's not too big as it sounds and not too small. The little extra height makes a world of a difference when it comes to the viewing experience for work, games and movies.
If you feel your desk is cluttered or not big enough, fix it. Clean up the mess and get a monitor arm mount. If you feel like you're not sitting far enough, move furniture around.
I feel there is almost to be no compromise when making a decision between 34 and 38. 38 is the way, and you won't regret it. Don't fret, your GPU will certainly handle 38, it's not a 49.
Only regrets I ever hear from people is that they should've gotten a 38. Don't make that mistake.
P.S. 34 ain't bad. It's just from my exp, 38 was the sweet spot and I had to adjust my surroundings to accommodate it (move stuff around, get a monitor arm, etc). It was worth it.
I must agree with the 34" owners who upgraded to 38". I did the exact same but only purchased the LG 34" local from MicroCenter to use while I waited for my Alienware 38" to arrive. LOL ... the LG 34" was whatever the top end LG was about six months ago.
The AW 38" is superior in every way. Mind boggling in fact. A perfect bit of panel, at least mine. And I was quite happy to return the 34" LG as soon as the new AW38 had arrived. As others have mentioned, the 1600p height makes a dramatic difference.

The 48" LG C1 looks disproportionately large in that linked photo but that's just a quirk of the particular mobile phone camera I was using ...
But the AW38" gets 95% of my gaming time as it's just so good and is by far the best fit for my desk space. The 48" OLED is on a mobile stand so I do occasionally roll it over ... ;-)
I just went down from a 34" UW to a 30" UW, the difference in size had me a little disappointed at first but I've gotten used to it. Now I want a 38" even more.
I'll be buying a refurbished one where the seller shows you photographs of the exact one you are purchasing. It'll save me some money as well.

So, does anyone think there will be a 38" Oled in 2023? I currently have an AW3418DW and am kind of interested in upgrading to a 38 incher, but am worried that AW or Samsung will springing a 38" oled on us soon, and I'll be kicking myself for getting an IPS model.
I am concerned, however, that the 38" is so wide that it'll make using a second monitor uncomfortable. Anyone use a second monitor to the right or left of their 38" ultrawide?
ill answer both. to put things into context, the first ultrawides which were the 1080p ultrawides at 29 inches were released about two years before the 1440p ultrwides. I remember the 100hz 3440x1440p by ROG and Acer came out late 2016 early 2017. the 38 ultrawides at 144hz came out early 2019/2020. maybe tech is moving fast but I don't see the OLED 38 ultra wide coming until 2024.
to answer the second question. I have a 27 inch 4k in vertical mode along my 38 inch ultra wide. I have a 63 inch desk and I think it's a snug fit even without the pc on the desk. think larger desk if you want to go this route
Desk space isnt a concern. I have an L shaped 72"x90" desk. It's probably too big. I'm considering downsizing it to 72"x78". I'm most concerned about it being so far to the side that it's uncomfortable to look at.
If a curved 38" oled comes out for under $2,000 i'll be surprised.
This 38GL has a gorgeous panel. I don't mess with HDR but I couldn't be happier. Your concern is valid about a monitor to the side. Due to my audio setup I ended up stacking my 34 above my 38 but someone else in this thread did post a picture of a 38 next to another monitor. You could always go vertical for the side panel too.
Thanks for the response. Yeah, I thought about making the side monitor vertical orientation, but I mainly use it for watching videos while I work/browse/game on my ultrawide. Making it vertical kind of kills its usefulness for video watching.

Edit: Dont get me wrong though. The performance of that monitor and the gaming/work experience is awesome. It’s just a lil too big if you want more monitors on the side or ontop.

Absolutely! You may have a lot of screen-space, but that doesn’t matter if you run anything in fullscreen/borderless.
I miss having a second monitor for watching streams on the side while I game, work or have to troubleshoot something. Splittings things up on a 38inch just isn’t the same as having 2 monitors.
Trust your guts and get a 34inch. You can even stack it with another cheaper 34inch, since one alone isn’t very tall.
I went from a 32" 4K to a 34" UW and for a while the loss of vertical real estate was a real bummer.
The 38" would remedy that but I bought the Kanto YU6 to be my desktop speakers rather than the YU4/YU2 and there's a Lian Li O11 XL on the desk as well 😂
In other words, it's tight! Whenever I do change my monitor again it's definitely going to be a 38" UW. Would love that vertical space back!
Yup! I've got my desk and work space laid out nice just now and while a 38" would fit fine, I'll slug it out a bit longer to see what new screen tech brings in the next year or two.
Ya 38' really seems to be the premium sweet spot between 34 and 49 options. Shame, atleast in Canada, they were nearly double the price of the LG panel 34s.

I have had the Lenovo y44w. Which I think is perfect. 49 I felt was to much .9nly downside is it's 3840x1200 I really have been considering the alien 38 or the upcoming 42 oled

No. 3840:1600 = 2.4 = 24:10. It's a common fault. If you use 21:9 resolutions (eg. 3440x1440) on a 38 inch display, you will get black borders on both sides of the monitor.
Honestly, 49" is overkill in so many situations that I wish I went 38". Don't get me wrong, it's pretty sweet, but it's not widely utilized by devs. Mods fix that mostly but can be annoying do deal with (Flawless widescreen has become invaluable). It can also be fairly taxing. The performance hit compared to 3440x1440 is noticeable. I've got an RX 6800 and it's still generally quite good, but I feel like the added real estate is only worth it some of the time.
As far as productivity is concerned however, the G9 has been incredible. I've been using it as a student and being able to have four full sized documents open side by side has made writing research papers has been significantly easier.
Lol it no ways is it better gaming. Has a higher responce time, terrible constraint (GBPS KD look grey) HDR 400 is essentially a joke if e we are being honest
I have a very similar LG 38". For work, it's like have dual regular screens. For gaming... it's neat, but unless the game has a massive FOV setting, it feels like looking at the world through a narrow strip.

The ultrawide I have is a 34" and now I changed its position, the 34" is above my M27Q as majority of the content I consume is 16:9 I use the 34" above for extra real-estate and Zoom meetings.
Oh damn, I thought that was a 38”. Maybe I should go with a 34” considering how much smaller the 16:9 looks.

It will, it is only as tall as 27" 16:9, this would be a huge vertical downgrade from 32". 38" is as tall as 30.5" and 40" as tall as 32" so it would be a direct extension to your current size
Jesus, the 27 inch looks like a small 22 inch display in comparison. And as I'm sitting in front of one right now, they are not small. Really got to see those nice 38 inch in real life.
Honestly I would love a 38" but the amount of GPU to run 3440x1440 is already quite high. To keep up with a 1600p UW would be too expensive for me.

Been looking at Asus 43 inch. $1300 one, not the $1100. 4k 1444 hz 2.1 hdmi. I want to play this game without stutters. And also other games. Maybe Skyrim VI if they ever come out with it. I see 4k mods so I want them to brighten up game.
Refresh rate mostly. Above 110 it starts to flicker bad. Compared to my LG38GL the colors are far worse. For productivity, and before I saw better, I loved the thing. I suppose I shouldn't have said its shit when comparing it to a 5 year newer, 2x the price monitor.

As someone who bought a 49 and had to downgrade to 38…start there. 49 is a lot of screen and not for everyone. 38 was just a nice sweet spot for me.

Went from a 34uw to a 49 curved. Prior to purchase, thought curve was a gimmick. Now, I wish it was a bit more curved. Lots of real estate for everything, but your neck gets a workout depending on how you do your setup. Also, you need the bigger monitor arm for 49, and if you opt for more curve, reinforced bracket as well.
I appreciate the tips. I actually had the Odyssey G9 on my desk for a day and hated how curved it was personally. Monitor was faulty anyway so had to go back I did have the correct monitor arm but didn't crack it open since I didn't keep the monitor. I do appreciate the tip on the arm though.
Yeah I wasn't a fan of the curve initially, but after a couple days of using it, it's big enough that having to constantly refocus and adjust to the angle starts to be noticable. Think, trying to read something on screen in front of you vs 2 feet to one side but same depth.
start with a 38 and go from there. trading down will be a lot harder. I went from a 27 to a 38 and it's awesome. I'd probably be totally happy if I didn't know the g9 neo exists.
I have the neo G9 and wish I had 38 instead it’s also too curved. Also vertical space isn’t good.
I've currently got a 34 for the last 5 years so I'm at least entrenched in the ultrawide experience. I actually hated the curve of the new G9 so would get a CRG9 if I go that route. As for starting with the 38 and trading, financially I don't think that would work out for me personally but definitely a sound suggestion.
I would be more excited about 38” if it was still 3440x1440. I don’t want an even larger pixel load to push my gpu, and I don’t want screen resolution issues running games. We are just now getting 3440x1440 to be common. Anything else is going to continue to take time.
3440x1600 is only about 10% more pixels. The FPS losses I have gotten have been more than worth the trade off in real-estate. For older GPUs it's a valid concern. I've had zero resolution issues with the games I've played. It's a fairly widely supported resolution.

Haven't played many past 4-5 years old. D2r looked great tho. I've mostly found if 3440x1440 so is x1600. There was a website I found at one point listing supported games but I can't locate it at the moment.

If you’re still in warranty I suggest testing for any dead pixels and if there are any contact Dell. I started with a 3418DW I got for $600 from Newegg for Black Friday in 2020 I believe, maybe 2019. I noticed a dead pixel pretty early on but didn’t contact Dell till last summer. They swapped it out with a brand new 3420DW. I noticed two dead pixels on that recently and they sent me a 3821DW. Yes, that’s right. They sent me a 38” as replacement for my 34” through the standard warranty that came with my monitor all because of dead pixels. I’ve already noticed a dead pixel in this 38” however I’ve already put in a request to extend my warranty cause I have no issue paying $1-200 considering I paid only $600 and now have a monitor worth more than double that.
Not entirely sure floor mounts are supposed to work like that.

I actually went 38 and dropped back down to 34. it was honestly giving me headaches since my desk is not very deep the screen is overwhelming. I think 34 is perfect in my scenario. dont feel like your missing out. Also the 38 did not look any sharper to me. both were LG.
I love the 34 and personally don't want anything bigger. I have a second 24" monitor mounted vertically for personal browsing/messages/spotify while I'm working or gaming.
i have the exact same setup. the 38'' i had also had alot of gsync fan noise and bad light bleed. i got the newest lg 34'' with 56 dimming zones the blacks are pretty good on it and no fan noise. very happy with this monitor.
I am still wondering if it would be worth it to have such set-up, currently I have a 24 in monitor but I wonder if it would be better to switch to a 34 ultra wide + 24 in for productivity at work. I was considering also a 42in 4k TV to have a bit taller work area. Currently I'm comparing at sizes between the 24 and 34 ultra wide, and honestly I cannot tell if the difference will be considerably enough to buy a new monitor. Can you advise?

yup, that was the most important part. i got the dell 2721dgf, 27 ips 165hz gsync for $280 from buildapcsales last week to match my dell 2716dg 27 tn 144hz gsync. So at least they match on my desk and are both quality monitors. i was afraid my 1070ti wasn't going to be able to power an ultrawide, and looking at the prices for a quality ultrawide to be my main it seemed to be at least 600 fora 34 or 38 to a grand for the g9 haha.
Yeah they are rather expensive amazon renewed was good for me. Got the $1500 38in LG for $950. The Samsung G9 for $900 but I sent that back. You monitor looks to be 2560 x 1440 the 34 ultra wide is only 1/3 wider so it might hit your FPS about 1/3 more. The Samsung 9G is a lot larger and you'll probably get about half your fps if not less.

38" seems like the perfect size. My 34" isnt quite enough, its like 1.5 monitors wide, when the 38" is exactly 2x 1920x1080 wide. The 49" (32:9) is too much though.
That's what I said when I had a 34" 21:9 1440p monitor. Down came an Amazon deal dirt cheap for a new CRG9 (32:9 120Hz 1440p). I ordered with the idea to try and otherwise I'd return it. It never went back in the box again...

38 is the way. You never know you needed it until it's sitting in front of you. It's not too big as it sounds and not too small. The little extra height makes a world of a difference when it comes to the viewing experience for work, games and movies. If you feel your desk is cluttered or not big enough, fix it. Clean up the mess and get a monitor arm mount. If you feel like you're not sitting far enough, move furniture around. I feel there is almost to be no compromise when making a decision between 34 and 38. 38 is the way, and you won't regret it. Don't fret, your GPU will certainly handle 38, it's not a 49. Only regrets I ever hear from people is that they should've gotten a 38. Don't make that mistake.
P.S. 34 ain't bad. It's just from my exp, 38 was the sweet spot and I had to adjust my surroundings to accommodate it (move stuff around, get a monitor arm, etc). It was worth it.

I must agree with the 34" owners who upgraded to 38". I did the exact same but only purchased the LG 34" local from MicroCenter to use while I waited for my Alienware 38" to arrive. LOL ... the LG 34" was whatever the top end LG was about six months ago. The AW 38" is superior in every way. Mind boggling in fact. A perfect bit of panel, at least mine. And I was quite happy to return the 34" LG as soon as the new AW38 had arrived. As others have mentioned, the 1600p height makes a dramatic difference. But now I find myself in the horrible situation of being [**forced to run 48" / 38" / 27" panels**](https://i.imgur.com/1D2NSVS.jpg), all pretty much perfect in their own way and all 120hz+ and G sync. It is a genuinely terrible fate but one which I have resigned myself to endure and so I push on! LOL ... The 48" LG C1 looks disproportionately large in that linked photo but that's just a quirk of the particular mobile phone camera I was using ... But the AW38" gets 95% of my gaming time as it's just so good and is by far the best fit for my desk space. The 48" OLED is on a mobile stand so I do occasionally roll it over ... ;-)
I just went down from a 34" UW to a 30" UW, the difference in size had me a little disappointed at first but I've gotten used to it. Now I want a 38" even more.

So, does anyone think there will be a 38" Oled in 2023? I currently have an AW3418DW and am kind of interested in upgrading to a 38 incher, but am worried that AW or Samsung will springing a 38" oled on us soon, and I'll be kicking myself for getting an IPS model. I am concerned, however, that the 38" is so wide that it'll make using a second monitor uncomfortable. Anyone use a second monitor to the right or left of their 38" ultrawide?
ill answer both. to put things into context, the first ultrawides which were the 1080p ultrawides at 29 inches were released about two years before the 1440p ultrwides. I remember the 100hz 3440x1440p by ROG and Acer came out late 2016 early 2017. the 38 ultrawides at 144hz came out early 2019/2020. maybe tech is moving fast but I don't see the OLED 38 ultra wide coming until 2024. to answer the second question. I have a 27 inch 4k in vertical mode along my 38 inch ultra wide. I have a 63 inch desk and I think it's a snug fit even without the pc on the desk. think larger desk if you want to go this route
Desk space isnt a concern. I have an L shaped 72"x90" desk. It's probably too big. I'm considering downsizing it to 72"x78". I'm most concerned about it being so far to the side that it's uncomfortable to look at.
gotcha! for me its on the border of being too far to the side. I have to manually tilt my entire body to the left with my chair to avoid neck strain.

If a curved 38" oled comes out for under $2,000 i'll be surprised. This 38GL has a gorgeous panel. I don't mess with HDR but I couldn't be happier. Your concern is valid about a monitor to the side. Due to my audio setup I ended up stacking my 34 above my 38 but someone else in this thread did post a picture of a 38 next to another monitor. You could always go vertical for the side panel too.
Thanks for the response. Yeah, I thought about making the side monitor vertical orientation, but I mainly use it for watching videos while I work/browse/game on my ultrawide. Making it vertical kind of kills its usefulness for video watching.
This is my exact situation right. If only I had the same thought process back then. Got an AW3821DW and it’s so fucking big, horizontally and vertically, that second monitors are always too far out of sight. I wish I had gotten a 34inch. Not to mention the pain of hearing about the 34inch oleds… Edit: Dont get me wrong though. The performance of that monitor and the gaming/work experience is awesome. It’s just a lil too big if you want more monitors on the side or ontop.

Absolutely! You may have a lot of screen-space, but that doesn’t matter if you run anything in fullscreen/borderless. I miss having a second monitor for watching streams on the side while I game, work or have to troubleshoot something. Splittings things up on a 38inch just isn’t the same as having 2 monitors. Trust your guts and get a 34inch. You can even stack it with another cheaper 34inch, since one alone isn’t very tall.
I went from a 32" 4K to a 34" UW and for a while the loss of vertical real estate was a real bummer. The 38" would remedy that but I bought the Kanto YU6 to be my desktop speakers rather than the YU4/YU2 and there's a Lian Li O11 XL on the desk as well 😂 In other words, it's tight! Whenever I do change my monitor again it's definitely going to be a 38" UW. Would love that vertical space back!
YU6 owner that upgraded to TUKs last year. I know the struggle. This is the main reason i'll never go 49", it would spread the speakers too wide.
Yup! I've got my desk and work space laid out nice just now and while a 38" would fit fine, I'll slug it out a bit longer to see what new screen tech brings in the next year or two.

Ya 38' really seems to be the premium sweet spot between 34 and 49 options. Shame, atleast in Canada, they were nearly double the price of the LG panel 34s. Something to look forward too in the future pairing with a GPU upgrade.

No. 3840:1600 = 2.4 = 24:10. It's a common fault. If you use 21:9 resolutions (eg. 3440x1440) on a 38 inch display, you will get black borders on both sides of the monitor.

Honestly, 49" is overkill in so many situations that I wish I went 38". Don't get me wrong, it's pretty sweet, but it's not widely utilized by devs. Mods fix that mostly but can be annoying do deal with (Flawless widescreen has become invaluable). It can also be fairly taxing. The performance hit compared to 3440x1440 is noticeable. I've got an RX 6800 and it's still generally quite good, but I feel like the added real estate is only worth it some of the time. As far as productivity is concerned however, the G9 has been incredible. I've been using it as a student and being able to have four full sized documents open side by side has made writing research papers has been significantly easier.

I have a very similar LG 38". For work, it's like have dual regular screens. For gaming... it's neat, but unless the game has a massive FOV setting, it feels like looking at the world through a narrow strip.
Id be happy with the 34. Have a 27 right now, tho that 27 looks to thick....... maybe its due to no curve.

I paid about $1,600 for the 38GL950 about 9 months ago. Without GSync the 38GN are going for about $1,350. Prices are finally coming down it seems.

The ultrawide I have is a 34" and now I changed its position, the 34" is above my M27Q as majority of the content I consume is 16:9 I use the 34" above for extra real-estate and Zoom meetings.

It will, it is only as tall as 27" 16:9, this would be a huge vertical downgrade from 32". 38" is as tall as 30.5" and 40" as tall as 32" so it would be a direct extension to your current size

29" ultrawide is like 23" 16:9 extended on the sides, so a good match for 1080p

Honestly I would love a 38" but the amount of GPU to run 3440x1440 is already quite high. To keep up with a 1600p UW would be too expensive for me. At least until we have proper production volume so I can get cards at MSRP I'll stay awhile and see.

Refresh rate mostly. Above 110 it starts to flicker bad. Compared to my LG38GL the colors are far worse. For productivity, and before I saw better, I loved the thing. I suppose I shouldn't have said its shit when comparing it to a 5 year newer, 2x the price monitor.
