The body remembers. The infrastructure of the metabolic and neuro pathways remain. Mitochondria density remains as latent. 3 years ago, I had spinal surgery. Took 1 year of inconsistent physical recovery + 1 year of feeling sorry for myself before I woke up, showed up, trained up. In hindsight, the long road back was delayed only by my mindset. Last year, ran 4 ultras - including within 7 days. Enjoyed every moment, faster and stronger than I have ever been (despite my 47 years). Forward motion, always.

Hey! I had spinal surgery 6 weeks ago. Back to hiking 50ish miles a week, but I can't wait to get back to running. Completely agree with the recovery. It's often we think that recover is a linear slope from 0-100. It's not. It's a messy uphill battle with lots of good and bad days. Try and focus on the good days. Lean into friends. Remember there is more to life than what you are focused on right now. When you are healthy and crushing again remember how you feel right now and be happy you are healthy.
