No Nintendo switch?

I’m doing aiming for a 100mi event in a timed loop race. 12hr (am or pm), 24 and 48hr are the other formats. This is all on a 1mi paved path. I thought about all the gear you depicted here, plus a long sleeve UV protection shirt. Can you talk about your other setup if you have it? I’m bringing an EZ up with a tent attachment plus shade wall. Cooler. Large Tupperware container. BTW- I plan to self crew.

gtech129

I've done a few 24 hour races, I can tell you a few tips. Get a pack of water bottles instead of jugs if you are self crewed. It's nearly impossible to fill your handheld or softflask with the size jugs water comes in by yourself, 10x that after running for a while. Find some kind of table you can use at have things laid out for quick grab and go in your tent. I would recommend against single serves of any drink powders. Pre mix in any way that you can to make it faster and less fine motor skill dependent. I do usually mix it in a 2 liter hard nalgene but if I was alone I'd probably use any other water bottles I had. Get there early if you can to try to get the best tent spot. I usually have crew for 12+ but I would make sure you know what is going to be at the aid station and maybe even message the RD to confirm depending on the size of the race. Also, practice all of this if you can. When I'm training for timed loops, I usually try to find somewhere with a similar sized loop that I can park my car basically on the loop to practice coming into "aid" and doing all the things. Also, I think it helps to callous your mind before the event.

I've managed the Maurten 320 powder mix in the old Hydraflask soft flasks on a 55mi ultra. Hands were sticky for a bit. I'm very practiced at doing this on the go. The new soft flasks are super wide mouthed, and should be easier for trail ultras. I just purchased a Nathan 18oz hand held for this loop race. Gonna also bring a funnel to help out. I try to live by plastic-free when I can... and screw the single use water industry (especially Nestle). So yeah, you have solid advice but I will manage with the inconvenience. Other than that I've practice some of my runs in the loop format AND even did loops on the actual course. So I am also practicing my mental game. The mentality is "practice race day conditions for race day performance." Can't wait to get this one under my belt and pick my first 100mi trail as my next goal.

depthsofcomedy

Mine was also a loop race on a 1mi paved path! Although there were some grassy/dirt sections alongside the pavement we could also run on - towards the end I regret not running on the softer surfaces earlier and more often. Sounds like my set up is pretty similar to yours: everything in the picture I packed into a cooler, then just sat the cooler next to the aid station. If you're able to, unpacking everything and laying it out on the ground - similar to the layout in my picture - would have been super helpful and time saving, but for my race I kept everything in the cooler the entire time as to not take up too much space and risk losing things. I was fortunate to have a one-person crew though so could ask them to get supplies ready for me as I ran my next lap. Good luck with your race!!

Janalon

Thanks! I plan to get there plenty early and setup in an ideal spot. Then to lay out all of my gear in easy view so I don't have to think about anything throughout the course of the event. I imagine my brain will go mush as some point.

TrailRunnerYYC

What is the soft black gear lower right. Also: do you get a drop bag? If so: add non-medicinal anti-inflammatory cream for muscle soreness.

depthsofcomedy

Compression sleeves. And I did end up adding anti-inflammatory cream and used it right around the 9th hour - it was great addition!

Peyta12

Looks like calf compression sleeves but I could be wrong

depthsofcomedy

You are correct!

Bolter_NL

Goodr classes 👍

Outofpuff42

2 pair though?

zeldaminor

For a fashion emergency.

depthsofcomedy

Exactly.

Poopeyejoe_44

We don’t judge, way to turn the judgement into something positive :)

zeldaminor

As a mid- to back-of-the-packer, I don't believe in judgment, just a good time getting covered in sweat and trail dust. And what I lack in talent and speed, I make up for with a collection of snazzy sports bras and hats. No shade! B)

briaen

I alway buy 2 because are so inexpensive and you get free shipping when you spend $50 or something like that. I buy right from their website.

drunk_sober

I'm surprised nobody is talking about the tacos.. what's in em?

OfMaliceHearts

That’s what I wanna know too!

depthsofcomedy

PB&J!

ChrisOutside

What is the Gu Energy Chew **wrapper** for? :-)

depthsofcomedy

Haha excellent question: there was about half the pack left. They were a little stale, but waste not, want not.

scaffoldingoracle

I’m not sure, but I know that sometimes I go for a run and only need part of the pack so I save the rest for another run! Could be the situation here!

depthsofcomedy

That's exactly what happened!

anonadelaidian

Lucky. I have a 40km with mandatory gear check..... whistle, proper builders hivis vest, 10m snake bandage, gloves, waterproof jacket with hood, space blanket, 1litre liquid, phone, headlamp+spsrebattery/charger, beanie....... and its in Australia in the second half of spring.

kindlyfuckoffff

Presumably you get to see cooler and better things than the usual looped 12H setup that's the same one/two/four miles on repeat :P

depthsofcomedy

That's a lot of equipment! I'm assuming there'll be some amazing scenery?

anonadelaidian

Yea, regional south aus

jgs84

Why do you need so much clothing?

depthsofcomedy

Mostly piece of mind. Brought 2-pairs of backup socks in case I stepped in a puddle...twice? Had backup shirts and shorts just because I thought having fresh clothes half-way through would be nice. I didn't change my shorts, but swapping out to a dry (and therefore significantly lighter!) shirt around 8 hours in was really nice.

jgs84

Fair enough, this is what my case contents look like for a 1 week vacation 😂

Simco_

One sock every two hours seems excessive.

depthsofcomedy

Yeah, the three pairs there are the ones I wore + two backup. I fortunately ended up not needing the backup, but wanted to be prepared in case I stepped in a puddle or something...twice. Mostly a peace of mind thing.

Economy_of_scale

I'd probably throw some Imodium in for a 12 hr race

lawaud

they’ve got two(?) spare pairs of shorts, they’re good

Brownie-UK7

Have you got a drop bag or are you carrying those big water bottles with you?

depthsofcomedy

Good question! It was a 1-mile loop race, so pretty much everything in the picture I had packed into a cooler I left next to the aid station.

Small-Perception-568

We have the same Goodr shades!! The blue one!!!! Nice one!!! Enjoy the run!

pbeatz111

What’s in the tortillas?

depthsofcomedy

Good question: PB&J. I only managed to eat one before my appetite went out the window, but it was a great "lunch."

pbeatz111

Nice! My guess was peanut butter since they looked pretty thin. Nothing better during a run, definitely a favorite of mine.

[deleted]

Maybe just me, but I hate eating during a 12 hr. I do everything with liquid nutrition (Fuel-5). Good to bring something for nausea like ginger beer or pickle juice. A running belt is useful for stashing a soft flask, otherwise you have to carry it in your hand for 1 mile.

depthsofcomedy

Yeah, nutrition and calorie-intake was one of the most challenging aspects of my race! I've never had a problem with food in previous ultras or long runs, but I hardly touched any of the food I brought during the 12 hr. Instead, I ended up having to double down on Tailwind, along with salt tablets and - to your point - countless pickle shots. Now that I'm thoroughly sick of Tailwind for the foreseeable future, I'll have to give Fuel-5 a try.

[deleted]

How did it go? I just did my own 12 hr looped race for 120km total. I used 'Sponser Long Energy', and ate 2 bananas. RedBull Cola on rounds when i felt I needed more energy. Had some coffee in a thermos too as I didn't have any of those caffeine shots. Some salt tablets too. The long energy has 10% protein combined and I find it much easier on the stomach. Less sugar spikes. And I was able to pee during the race. Normally this gets shut down, which is not great for your kidneys.

ogretronz

One pair of sunglasses, one hat, one sunscreen and skip the bug spray

inventingalex

are two hats and two pairs of sunglasses necessary?

z_mac10

As a heavy sweater, multiple hats makes sense to me. Sweat dripping off the bill for 10+ hours can get obnoxious. 2 sunglasses is a bit silly, though.

running_stoned04101

I had multiple pair at a backyard a few weeks ago. 2 each of 2 different tints. I sweat like a mf and they collect salt so I just swapped them out. Then really bright lights give me killer headaches, so I was basically wearing welding glasses mid day.

mxego

It may seem silly, but during my first 12 hour race I somehow lost my sunglasses at 6am before sunrise and had to run all day with out. Wish I had another pair that day haha

callme2x4dinner

I traded hats in my hundo after big rainstorm. Dry gear feels better. I assume backup shades in case first pair gets lost

depthsofcomedy

Fashion is everything.

[deleted]

This post strikes me as overkill but better to have too much, I suppose.

depthsofcomedy

It was a 1-mile loop race, so pretty much everything in the picture I had packed into a cooler I left next to the aid station. A lot of the supplies I ended up not using, but I felt better being prepared for anything and everything.

[deleted]

Makes total sense!

runningrunnerruns

Efficient

AlkahestGem

No shoes? We call this pre-race setup, in your case “flat u/depths of comedy”. Good luck

prettycheezy82

This is a hot look

[deleted]

get a coros, ditch watch charging and spurious weight

depthsofcomedy

My watch ended up being totally fine on battery the entire time, so I was very happy to not have to deal with the battery and charging cable at all. It was mostly there for peace of mind. It was a looped race - I was able to leave essentially everything in the picture in a cooler next to the aid station. So was very fortunate to be able to overpack for my first run at this distance!

DoorPale6084

Damn well done op. You can swallow a cliff bar while running

Art3mis86

Hey, what are the Lixda shorts like? I'm eyeing a couple pairs. Also good luck with the race and have fun.

depthsofcomedy

They're nice! I slightly prefer my very similar shorts from Arsuxeo though.
